* Everybody OK out there? From the Tribune

Five people were injured, one of them critically, 16 homes were uninhabitable, at least 10 people have been displaced and at least 125 damage reports have been filed as the result of a “considerable” tornado that tore through Naperville late Sunday, officials said.

And that’s in just one of three southwest suburban communities hit by what meteorologists suspect was at least an EF-2 tornado — a ranking on the Enhanced Fujita scale — which goes from zero to five. An EF-2, should it be confirmed later Monday, would mean the tornado had wind speeds of 111 to 135 mph.

Matt Friedlein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said there’s a chance the tornado — forecasters think it was a single funnel cloud that touched down multiple times in Naperville, Woodridge and Darien, in that order — may even be classified as an EF-3 once a team of meteorologists goes into the field to investigate its path and the damage it caused. An EF-3 is defined as a tornado with wind speeds of 136 to 165 mph.

“We suspect it was one tornado. We don’t know that for certain, but based on the nature of the information and what we know about the character of this event, that’s what we’re leaning toward,” Friedlein said around 7:30 a.m.

If the sirens went off in Elgin, I slept through them. A friend told me they went off in St. Charles.

Midnight sirens in E. DuPage County. Wife woke me up, we went to the basement for 1/2 hour, then back to bed. Serious damage about 8-10 miles from us. inch and a half of rain.

Sirens went off in Evanston, but no tornado, just incredibly strong rain with thunder and lightening (resulting in a highly anxious dog).

Tribune? Do people still read the Tribune?

To the post - my godparents live in Woodridge, and said they heard the sirens. Not directly affected, but it was apparently a very scary night.

We good, just a bit south and east of us. Was using the HT to listen the to 2-meter ham repeater to get the real-time spotting. So between the sirens and I was able to stay on top of things.

How these storms manage to obliterate one house and leave one next to it with a small bit of wind damage never ceases to amaze me.

Tribune could not get the U.S. Open purse distribution into the E edition so did not check to sss any info on weather. Gotta love Mary Ann. Surprised she not planning a 4 nite report on the Kass years

Sirens went off on the northwest side of Chicago, but no tornado. A few branches down in the neighborhood but nothing bad. Prayers to all those affected.

I didn’t hear any sirens by me, but my cell phone blew up a little before 11:00 with a very alarming alarm. Made it sound like all heck was about to break loose. We got some wind and lots of rain, but no tree limbs were down around here this morning. It missed us by several miles.

The warning was too much for what happened, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. Once a tornado is spotted, everybody needs to be on alert. And that cell phone alarm can wake the dead.

I went to Albany Park for a haircut. It looks like it rained a lot more over there than it did this close to the lake. There’s lots of standing water over there.

  10. - @misterjayem - Monday, Jun 21, 21 @ 11:22 am:

We slept through the night without incident, then woke up to find TORNADO WARNING alerts on each of our phones. (One was right beside the bed but we didn’t hear nothin’)

No causalities in our household, but we’re formulating a new plan for going forward.

Lots of rain no worse for wear. Feel for the folks in Dupage.

Same in Rogers Park (minus the dog). A few anxious moments, though, from the time Weather Underground indicated a tornado in Niles with the one-hour projection cone pointing straight at my street to it being directly overhead, but thankfully nothing happened.

  13. - DuPage - Monday, Jun 21, 21 @ 12:05 pm:

Wind whipped rain, yard soggy, no damage.

  14. - thisjustinagain - Monday, Jun 21, 21 @ 12:07 pm:

South Suburbs (Riverdale) checking in. No Tornado Warnings by phone, even though the closest affected community was nearby Alsip in one warning. No sirens heard. No apparent storm-damage on a drive-through of 144th St to Indiana Ave and into South Holland. A few small pieces of branch (not even the branch, more like break-offs). Take tornadoes seriously, people. “It can’t happen here” is on the Famous Last Words list.

Skipped right over both my place and my brother’s place.

Lots of wind and rain by me (south side of Chicago, one block from the lake). It woke me up, but the cats slept right through it.

  17. - Suburban Mom - Monday, Jun 21, 21 @ 2:04 pm:

Noisy and scary, but all the trees that were going to come down came down during the derecho last year, I guess. My block is mostly unscathed, with a few wandering trashcans and tipped-over planters and similar. (We were not close enough to hear sirens.)

Didn’t have to wake the kids up to move them to the basement, but I did sit up really late waiting for every last Cook County storm warning to be cancelled, just in case.

  18. - bogey golfer - Monday, Jun 21, 21 @ 2:45 pm:

Damaged homes and trees to the west of me. Damaged trees 1/2 mile south.

Remember the Lemont tornado of ‘76. It is weird how selective the damage occurs.
