Feds to turn over 90,000 documents and secret recordings to Mapes’ lawyers

Wednesday, Jul 21, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Yet another reason why you don’t put yourself into a position of being busted for lying to a federal grand jury while under immunity. The G doesn’t ask questions in those situations unless they already know the answers and also have receipts to back it all up

A “voluminous” batch of 90,000 documents and secret recordings will soon be sent to defense lawyers handling the perjury and obstruction case against Tim Mapes, the longtime chief of staff for House Speaker Michael Madigan, a prosecutor said in court Wednesday.

Mapes, 66, of Springfield, has pleaded not guilty to lying to a grand jury in the sprawling ComEd bribes-for-favors case. He is one of the closest Madigan insiders to be ensnared in the ongoing investigation.

At a telephonic status hearing Wednesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Julia Schwartz said the government sent Mapes’ defense team an initial batch of “intercepted communications and other records” on June 8.

“The next production will be voluminous,” Schwartz told U.S. District Judge John Lee. “We anticipate approximately 90,000 documents as well as additional communications and recordings.”

    It’s not 90.

    Nope.

    It’s 90… thousand.

Never take the money, never lie to the Feds.

Always respond to the answers truthfully Mapes and never mess with the Federales for your former boss! Things could have gone smoother - in and out of the grand jury. Now, you are stuck in the hole with a major law firm expense and potentially ending up wearing an orange
    jumpsuit.

Next comes the review of all that. Meter’s running.

That’s a lot of billable hours to read that stuff.

Even at a conservative estimate of $100 in fees per document, that is going to be quite a bar tab.

My advice would be to change his plea to guilty. He’s probably looking at 12-14 months at a minimum security facility. If he goes to trial, given the evidence against him, he’ll get the same outcome but the trial itself could take two years of additional waiting.

Plead guilty now, and he could be out before this ever got inside a court room. He’d definitely save a lot on legal fees too.

  11. - The Dude Abides - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 2:50 pm:

That not guilty plea isn’t going anywhere Tim. Time to change that plea and see if your lawyers can cut a deal.

  12. - NoCorruption - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 2:50 pm:

Does this mean Madigan will be indicted soon?

  13. - Maple Street Club - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 2:59 pm:

90,000 documents and secret recordings is a rather giant number for a guy facing lying to a grand jury. It’s moments like this where one begins to wonder if more prominent names are part of this investigation.

  14. - Annoyed - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 3:01 pm:

90,000 pages and all the Feds have is a charge about Mapes saying he didn’t think McClain was Madigan’s ‘guy’. Yeah, great use of GS-15’s Lausch.

Time to squeal and cut a deal.

  16. - Rudy’s teeth - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 3:20 pm:

Who is Mapes’ mouthpiece? Could it be a Chicago favorite—Michael Monico? Asking for a friend.

    Was thinking the same

    What’s a G -15?

  20. - Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 3:43 pm:

Keep in mind that’s one charge so far. Also they have obligations to turn over anything that might possibly be relevant, thus the kitchen sink approach.

  21. - Old Lobster - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 3:43 pm:

GS-15 is a reference to the Federal pay scale for federal employees.

    ===What’s a G -15?===

If is the federal “civilian” equivalent to an Army / Air Force / Marine Colonel or Navy Captain. 2021 pay scale is $110-$144 K. Pretty high ranking FBI agent.

  24. - Just Me 2 - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 3:58 pm:

    ===Yeah, great use of GS-15’s===

Only would the people on this blog complain about wasting taxpayer money to root out corruption in state government. What you’re seeing today is just the tip of the iceberg.

  25. - Annoyed - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 4:07 pm:

FYI, AUSA’s normally are GS-15’s after 3 years.

  26. - Bennie - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 4:27 pm:

Anyone: you forgot Chicago cost of living adjustment, 15’s make $143k to $173k.

  27. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 4:32 pm:

    If there was pension talk we’d hit the Illinois trifecta;

    Pension
    Salary
    Corruption

Betting Mapes could care less if they are G-15, fly on a G-15, or play Bingo and it’s a B-15… it’s 90,000 docs of all bad.

  28. - Anyone Remember - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 4:42 pm:

===Only would the people on this blog complain about wasting taxpayer money to root out corruption in state government.===

What I’m complaining about is the appearance of prosecutors / investigators getting “tunnel vision” - the thing that destroyed the case against Aaron Shock and the Edgar era MSI scandal prosecutions.

Going to pen at 66 or protect mike madigan

Not a hard call for Mapes, either. Just a wayyyyyy different call than I would have made.

Surely the guy isn’t so stupid as to have thought he could have gotten away with lying to a Fed Grand jury. So he knew this was going to be the result.

It’s really difficult to understand that type of thinking….

  31. - thisjustinagain - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 4:52 pm:

Shakedown, takedown, you’re busted. 90K docs is not the usual thing; this has unnamed names written all over it. Everybody sing: Illinois, where politicians go to jail.

  32. - Bigtwich - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 5:21 pm:

Sen McCann only got 64,000 pages.

  33. - Lincoln Lad - Wednesday, Jul 21, 21 @ 7:54 pm:

Legal fees and jail time. At 66…
He’ll likely annoy people on the inside too, and MJM won’t be able to control what happens there.
