The material, if anything, is based on what Bob Hope would have done 20-30 years ago. If we believe that Bob Hope is cancelable, I’m really concerned about our country. Bob Hope was a comedian who was able to gently rib, you know, all parties and all people, whether it was Lyndon Johnson, or Richard Nixon or John F Kennedy, or George HW Bush. Bob Hope was an American first, and he gently ribbed those who were in power.

To quote Denny Green, they are who we thought they were.

  2. - Sayitaintso - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 4:32 am:

“…..a window peeper threw up on her windowsill.” Yep, ‘gentle ribbing’, him and Bob Hope. “Hey, did you hear about…..”; “How about that Nancy Pelosi…”; “Now some people say….”; “In fact, some people say….:”. “And then there’s…..”. Real smooth dude, like listening to a semi grinding through all the gears. Overall, the purpose seemed to be a “….but PLEASE don’t ignore me” thing. He got that right, at least for a while.

  3. - Mary Poppins - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 4:56 am:

    Bert:
I always say there’s nothing like a good joke.

    Uncle Albert:
And that was nothing like a good joke.

  4. - Flyin' Elvis'-Utah Chapter - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 6:38 am:

Strange that Chuckles McGee from Sangamon county talked more about Bob Hope than his own “comic stylings”.

But hey, keep it comin’ GOP, you’ve got me in stitches.

  5. - Pundent - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 6:44 am:

Your new GOP folks. Say offensive things and then act offended when called out on it. When you’ve given up on governing this is all you’ve got.

  6. - Flyin' Elvis'-Utah Chapter - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 6:45 am:

Old enough to remember when Arnold Schwarzenegger was the second coming for the GOP.

Also, commenting on a powerful woman’s age and looks is going to reap what in those suburbs?

  7. - H-W - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 6:55 am:

First, you are not Bob Hope.

Second, there are ways to roast people that do not involve shaming and attacking whole categories of people.

Some of this is funny. But some is offensive. Learn the difference, and you too can be an effective comedian.

  8. - Inverted Pyramid - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 7:02 am:

“If you haven’t got any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble.” –Bob Hope

Let’s hope IL & Sangamon GOP retire Emcee Paulie Pal after yesterday’s performance.

  9. - Excitable Boy - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 7:06 am:

Old, ugly, fat dude makes jokes about people being old, ugly, and fat. Yep, Trump wannabe.

  10. - Telly - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 7:10 am:

Am I the only one who didn’t think Bob Hope was funny?

  11. - Give Us Barabbas - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 7:14 am:

I saw Bob Hope. And you, Paul, are no Bob Hope.

It’s a fine line between roasting public figures and just tossing off cheap insults. But this is where we are now in a hyper partisan political world. Your audience was full of anger and hate and frustration and you made a judgement call to play to that, and I’m very disappointed by that choice. When I see you next time at church, I’m going to look at you very differently from now on.

  12. - Travel Guy - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 7:19 am:

Did the 15 other people in attendance appreciate the act?

  13. - B Team - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 7:43 am:

    He’s clueless.

  14. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 7:50 am:

Welp, you sucked all the oxygen of Republican Day by thinking being vile and tasteless is a trait of Bob Hope.

To really grasp the “old, angry, rural, white” vibe… you reference a man who’s been dead for… 18 years.

Those who were born when Bob Hope died… can *now* vote.

If anything, this alleged “acceptable” comedy shows how out of touch, how the party is tone deaf, and how far this party needs to go to be relevant… when it lets the in-law uncle feel tasteless jokes work, and *thinks* he’s an iconic comedian… of pre-baby boomers.

    Whew.

    As I said yesterday;

Not a soul stopped the jokes, not a one disavowed the “comedian”…

Tracy already told me… in his remarks after becoming Chair

===So, whatever your political leanings, wherever you live - if you want to fight corruption, restore fiscal sanity, grow our economy, and stand for law and order - you’re on our team. It’s time to suit up, work together, and bring home some wins for the people of Illinois.”===

So we can add tasteless jokesters to racists, insurrectionists, and conspiracy theorists.

See, they’re telling us who they are. I’m not shocked that the “set” was at minimum “tasteless”… talk to an “in-law” uncle or check his “Facerbooker” or “instagramering”

They love these jokes, you love your favorite aunt.

What a total disgrace of a party function

  15. - Henry Francis - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:04 am:

Does anyone under the age of 50 even know who Bob Hope was? These guys are so living in the past.

  16. - Club J - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:04 am:

The difference between Paul Palazzolo and Bob Hope. When Bob Hope told joke remotely like that they were about his friends. Uncle Pauly was insulting people with his jokes then trying to use the old well Bob Hope used to do it.

Nobody is buying what you’re selling Palazzolo.

  17. - Just Me 2 - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:06 am:

Bob Hope didn’t make fun of the way people looked. This guy is an embarrassment to the GOP. He should just apologize but instead he doubles down. This is what Trump has done to the party. They’ll be in the minority forever with this attitude.

  18. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:12 am:

    I found his “old, angry, white, rural” defense at its most glaring here;

===…whether it was Lyndon Johnson, or Richard Nixon or John F Kennedy, or George HW Bush.===

We all can argue here the words and acceptance or even how this is NO WAY a Bob Hope set… but…

… the man referenced four dead presidents… as targets of comedy of a man… who’s been dead… for 18 years.

    Think on *that*

The comedian isn’t even relevant to his own rationale… of today.

This is why your in-law uncle doesn’t pontificate unless your favorite aunt isn’t around.

  19. - Annon3 - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:24 am:

Sadly Paul has turned into a caricature of what anyone who has spent time in Springfield knows old, angry, entitled, white man, SHG, Sangamon Co GOP’er only the world/state has moved on outside of his little bubble. And they wonder why no one wants to come back to Springfield after they have seen the Lincoln sites.

  20. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:26 am:

If we really have to go back to 1940-1950s comedians with “bite”…

    If you listen to a Jack Benny or Bob Hope, arguably for their time the elite… two major things existed;

    1) the other punchlines to targets was the self-deprecating comedy so it was about them, Benny or Hope.

    2) both allowed targets to be “in on the jokes”, allowing the best retort zinger aimed at Benny and Hope.

Similar to the overall, but both got to both points differently.

The comedian yesterday was about Facebook anger and covering his bombing by pointing at himself… for sympathy… while pointing to himself… for tasteless comparison too.

I hadn’t thought of Jack Benny or Bob Hope in years… but… “Thanks ILGOP”

  21. - Earnest - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:32 am:

    >is based on what Bob Hope would have done 20-30 years ago

He isn’t wrong: try 50 years ago:

Bob Hope was the establishment. Bob Hope was friends with Nixon. Bob Hope was speaking in favor of the [Vietnam] War. Bob Hope was expressing that kind of backward, suburban, WASP view of minorities, homosexuals, the women’s movement. Even his comments on the women’s movement were very condescending. He did a special in the ’70s on the women’s movement and it was so silly, so backward. And [in his act] the woman who had some big political office was dusting the chairs in between her meetings. It was just awful. He got mail … from feminists.

  22. - Earnest - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:34 am:

    >a caricature of what anyone who has spent time in Springfield knows old, angry, entitled, white man, SHG, Sangamon Co GOP’er only the world/state has moved on outside of his little bubble

Moved on? He’s in the mainstream of the party that is very close to establishing permanent minority rule in this county.

  23. - Grandson of Man - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:34 am:

Didn’t notice any statement of condemnation from ILGOP leadership. They seem to be resigned to the fate of having the Trump base as voters and super minority status. That appeared evident with the statement against impeaching Trump for the insurrection.

  24. - Birds on the Bat - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:38 am:

    old,angry, entitled,white man

    You mean like Biden?

  25. - EssentialStateEmployeeFromChatham - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:38 am:

==old, angry, entitled, white man, SHG, Sangamon Co GOP’er only the world/state has moved on outside of his little bubble. ==

Also known locally as the “Griffin Mafia.”

  26. - BTO2 - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:40 am:

Paul is/was a wanna-b political player here in Sangamon, fact is, just little fish.. Now he just looks old and out of touch.

  27. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:43 am:

    - Birds on the Bat -

    ===You mean like Biden?===

That only works… if you approved of the comedian yesterday.

Being a victim to “the left” is your schtick, LOL

  28. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:48 am:

===He’s in the mainstream of the party that is very close to establishing permanent minority rule in this county.===

    This is a correct observation.

The comedian is the rule, not the exception of today’s ILGOP, that’s yearning for yesteryear… and Bob Hope

  29. - lake county democrat - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 8:57 am:

“A lot of the material, if anything, is based on Bob Hope…he gently ribbed those who were in power”

Ok, let’s talk about the material that wasn’t based on Bob Hope.

  30. - Pot calling kettle - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:02 am:

Odd that he cited Bob Hope when his inspiration was clearly Trump. This is the kind of stuff Trump would regularly deliver to cheering crowds between complaining about conspiracies and downplaying failures. Clearly, the GOP is not moving on.

  31. - Larry Bowa Jr. - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:08 am:

“Never believe that republicans are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The republicans have the right to play.

They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”

  32. - Candy Dogood - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:08 am:

===Ok, let’s talk about the material that wasn’t based on Bob Hope. ===

TIL That the Library of Congress has an 85,000 page Bob Hope joke file.

  33. - Saigon Joe - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:10 am:

Just Bacon? That one is pretty funny, but we prefer replacing letters in his last name, somehow it’s more appropriate. Y’all can dish it out but can’t take it

  34. - NotAnonymous - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:12 am:

Lol at the Unknown emcee comment.

  35. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:14 am:

===Y’all can dish it out but can’t take it===

So you are wanting to be classless.

    Ok. Thanks.

What’s been so pedestrian is the “defending” of the comedian, even of the jokes, because if you can’t beat Dems, you try to “Own the Libs”… like every other old, angry, rural, white voters that are Trumpkins

  36. - BTO2 - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:20 am:

Since we’re talking about someone’s funny initials - PP. Sure there is a joke in there somewhere.

  37. - Birds on the Bat - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:24 am:

Being a victim to “the left” is your schtick

For the record, what Paul did yesterday was reprehensible. You go ahead and keep judging though. That’s your schtick.

  38. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:27 am:

=== what Paul did yesterday was reprehensible. You go ahead and keep judging though.===

… as you throw in Biden for no reason?

I’d stop while you’re behind, lol

  39. - Nick Name - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:29 am:

I saw Bob Hope at the Convention Center back in the 80s (he was here for the Rail Charity Golf Classic).

Bob Hope was funny. Paul Palazzolo is not.

  40. - Pundent - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:35 am:

My impression of today’s GOP is that it’s a party bereft of any ideas that only wants to obstruct and insult their political opponents. Yesterday was an opportunity to dispel that notion. They doubled down.

  41. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:36 am:

As we quibble about, the ILGOP has decided not to disavow any of it, oh, there’s the “disappointment” and “not happy” silliness from one or another… but no condemnation.

    Makes one wonder why?

  42. - Commissar Gritty - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:37 am:

Hey I got another joke. Permanent super-minority 😂

  43. - Give Us Barabbas - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:41 am:

Republicans sure liked Arnold when he came to the Illinois State Fair as honorary chair of the President’s Council on Health and Physical Fitness.

    Gee, I wonder what happened?

  44. - Amalia - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:41 am:

starting Friday with a full Palazzolo leaves me with indigestion.

  45. - Thomas Paine - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:42 am:

Weird I don’t remember Bob Hope telling jokes about what Barbara Bush or Nancy Reagan looked like naked.

And for the record, Bob Hope wasn’t telling jokes 20-30 years ago, and the jokes he told the 20-30 years before that were mostly the same jokes he’d been telling since the 40’s.

  46. - Nagidam - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:42 am:

    ===Makes one wonder why?===

    TicTok… Demmer, Brady, Davis

  47. - Birds on the Bat - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:48 am:

as you throw in Biden for no reason

But it’s ok to stereotype Paul as old angry white guy though. Gotcha.

  48. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:49 am:

=== But it’s ok to stereotype Paul as old angry white guy though.===

When someone tells you who they are, believe them.

    I’d stop digging, friend.

  49. - Fixer - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:51 am:

I wonder if Paul and the rest of the ILGOP would appreciate if someone were to treat them using the stylings of George Carlin. I’m guessing the pearl clutching would reach new levels if that were to happen.

  50. - 47th Ward - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:51 am:

===If we believe that Bob Hope is cancelable, I’m really concerned about our country.===

Cancel culture? No one I’ve seen or heard from is trying to cancel you and your schtick. We are mocking you and holding you accountable for what you’ve said. There’s a difference.

Believe me, if it was up to me, you’d be the opening act for every IL GOP event until 2023. We want you at the mic, we need you at that mic.

  51. - Fixer - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 9:53 am:

Was Biden making bad hot takes to two dozen folks at the IL State Fair yesterday, Birds? Did I miss that?

  52. - Ron Burgundy - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 10:06 am:

-ok to stereotype Paul as old angry white guy though.-

*checks picture* Guy? Check. White? Check.
    *reads “jokes”* Angry? Check.

  53. - Merica - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 10:16 am:

Republican day (an irrelevant event) at the State Fair (an irrelevant event) and a dumb speech to boot.

we’re about to get slammed like texas with the Delta variant. The State Fair shouldn’t even be going on this year, it’s a super spreader event.

Also, JB doesn’t care if people make fun of his weight. He’s got more of a spine then that, so no one needs to feel bad for him. He’s a responsible, fully formed adult and a strong leader. let’s give him credit for that

  54. - Kayak - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 10:23 am:

It would be refreshing if the new Sangamon County GOP chairwoman Dianne Barghouti Hardwick would denounce this clown but unfortunately, she chooses to owns this and keep the circus right on schedule.

  55. - thunderspirit - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 10:23 am:

“When someone tells you who they are, believe them.”

The *first* time they tell you who they are. You’ll save time that way.

Hat tip to Oswego Willy and to Ron Burgundy.

  56. - Ducky LaMoore - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 10:37 am:

Of course who doesn’t remember that great Bob Hope joke about Governor Reagan and Hitler….

  57. - JSS - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 10:39 am:

Forget about being cancelled for PC culture or whatever Palazzolo is claiming, he should be cancelled because his ‘routine’ is what is getting attention instead of the Republican speakers. Every statehouse reporter is at the event and when the emcee gets the media coverage, the emcee done messed up.

  58. - EssentialStateEmployeeFromChatham - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 10:40 am:

==The State Fair shouldn’t even be going on this year, it’s a super spreader event.==

I agree. Is it too late to cancel the DuQuoin fair?

  59. - thoughts matter - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 10:42 am:

Yesterday was not a roast event. When those happens, the subject of the roast is there and in on the joke. And the jokes at a roast aren’t mean spirited because the person saying them has a good opinion of the person overall.
I’m also annoyed with Republicans that want to go back decades to find something that justifies their current behavior. Whether it’s Bob Hope or telling me that they were the party that voted for xyz 50-100 years ago, It’s not who they are now.

I’m looking toward the future. How are you going to behave in 2021, 2022 and beyond? Your recent past ( including this week) tells me all I need to know about that.

  60. - walker - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 10:52 am:

Foolish to think this weak act represented anything about IL Republicans overall. It did demonstrate an acceptance of Trump’s unique showmanship.

  61. - Give Me A Break - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 10:58 am:

Sangamon County GOP chairwoman Dianne Barghouti Hardwick, she that did every thing she could get in the inner circle of Secretary Saddler at DHS, including trying convince Saddler’s team she really wasn’t a Republican just said she was to get a job.

Sangamon County GOP might want to watch their backs in case she changes her mind again.

  62. - Demoralized - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 11:29 am:

==I agree. Is it too late to cancel the DuQuoin fair?==

So don’t go to the fairs. Sheesh. You’re afraid of your shadow.

  63. - EssentialStateEmployeeFromChatham - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 11:33 am:

==So don’t go to the fairs. Sheesh. You’re afraid of your shadow.==

I haven’t gone to the fairs in several years anyway. I don’t plan to ever return to the fair again, or anything with huge crowds, after this ordeal.

  64. - The Fellow Edgar - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 11:39 am:

Democrats take a pass on Rickey Hendon calling Bill Brady a racist. A few one liners, and everyone is fritter.

  65. - Pundent - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 11:41 am:

=Is it too late to cancel the DuQuoin fair?=

Vaccines are now available and we know that they work particularly as it pertains to serious illness and injuries. Now maybe we should be limiting attendance to people who can prove they’re vaccinated or can show a negative test, but the days of cancelling things are waning. And if the state fair is a super spreader, how do we justify Major League Baseball or the NFL holding large events?

Events aren’t spreading the virus, unvaccinated people are.

  66. - Chris - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 11:51 am:

“ So don’t go to the fairs. Sheesh. You’re afraid of your shadow”

Didn’t realize that super spreader events only affect those who attend…there’s probably a Noble [sic] prize waiting for the proof of that.

  67. - Rich Miller - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 12:13 pm:

===Democrats take a pass on Rickey Hendon calling Bill Brady a racist===

Um, that was 11 years ago and there was a gigantic uproar.

Really stretching there, bub. But you do you.

  68. - Captain Obvious - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 12:28 pm:

About half of that was funny, the other half pretty offensive. Just Bacon and brunch, funny. Pelosi peeper, really offensive, etc. But really, why the jokes at all? Not the time, not the place, not the right image to project. Where was the passion for achieving the party’s goals. Beyond firing Just Bacon, what are those goals? You know, the vision thingy.

  69. - Pundent - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 12:51 pm:

=Beyond firing Just Bacon, what are those goals? You know, the vision thingy.=

I guess you missed the last four years. Insults are all the rage within the GOP right now. Palazzolo was giving them what they want. And not a single member of the ILGOP has stepped forward to say that he doesn’t speak for the party. Because it’s what the base wants. The question is why would a party be content with a base that’s not large enough to win a meaningful race in this state? Maybe Durkin or McConchie can enlighten me on that point. Or maybe they’re going to follow Tracy’s lead and claw their way back one dogcatcher at a time. They certainly have the whistle for it.

  70. - Mama - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 12:59 pm:

The the Library of Congress with all the jokes came close to getting blown up by a Trump fan yesterday. Thank God he didn’t know how to build a bomb.

  71. - Skeptic - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 1:04 pm:

“Insults are all the rage within the GOP right now” As long as it’s done by a white man and not, say, Michelle Wolfe.

  72. - Cheryl44 - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 1:11 pm:

“this weak act” told the rest of us who the ILGOP is now.

  73. - Flying Elvis'-Utah Chapter - Friday, Aug 20, 21 @ 1:33 pm:

    “and everyone is fritter”.

On the contrary, please ILGOP, keep this up, matter of fact, double down.
