The first priority of organized labor, if they care about the health of their members and ending the pandemic, should be to find union-friendly ways to make vaccine mandates work.

Agree. Unions, at least public sector unions, have also been focused on policies that improve the health of the community. Today, that means mandated vaccinations.

Good for the Sun-Times ed board. Given that a good portion of the paper’s ownership is held by labor unions, that statement (unfortunately) took some guts.

The whole point of unions has always the welfare of the members.
It’s a no brainer that the welfare of the members includes their health.
Vaccines will keep the members healthy.

DeVore has hit the Facebook Live circuit with another how to beat the vaccine and test mandates. He offered up a zoom call with any Attorney who wanted to learn how to do it after he spent hours reviewing IDPH’s new guidelines. I’m guessing he didn’t get a lot actual Attorneys calling him so he went with the Facebook Live.
Plus he could have someone ask for donations to his nonprofit while he was teaching all the housewives the legal ways of Thomas DeVore.
Something happened in Christian County yesterday with him but Bishop or the Watchdogs are talking.

Seriously, why does it matter if AFSCME supports a mandate or not?
The terms of employment ( under which a vaccine mandate falls ) are a Management right.
Period
AFSCME can only perhaps delay the implementation for a short time.
It’s not like anybody cares about the union otherwise.
I’m starting to feel like this is either “concern trolling” or there is something afoot that nobody is talking about. My perfidy sense is going off.
Why does it matter to anyone whether the union supports it or not when they can’t stop the mandate from happening or not.
And don’t give me the lines about “it’s what a union should do”. You’ve actually never given a crap about what the union does except when it conflicts with your self interest.
I see nobody pressuring private companies to impose mandates which leads me to believe that this pressure has another purpose.
Oh…wait… is this another iteration of the “I pay your salary as a public employee” falacy? Maybe thats it.
Look, the union is going to do what it feels is in its best interest.
What really is your skin in this game?
Is it something more than just a projection of righteous indignation?
Look, I believe we should have a vaccine mandate. I’m fine with it. But you don’t see me organizing and executing campaigns and influence operations against private companies or other unions do you?

Nope.
If a labor organization decides one of its pillar, core, bedrock beliefs is not something it needs to back “because internal politics”, the scrutiny as to why that labor organization even *exists* is more than fair, and why that labor organization is against the health, safety, abd well being of its membership at the workplace.
AFSCME here is not a serious labor organization.

My skin in the game is unvaccinated folks having the ability of spreading a virus, a global pandemic, and the union is in support of waiting. That’s my skin… and since it’s wholly against why labor organizations exist… it’s not projection, it’s a wonder why even take AFSCME seriously at this point?

One of the primary purposes of a union is to protect the health and safety of its members. That’s why it matters. This should be a no brainer if the union truly was serious about such protections.

Considering labors’ existence and reason is to help membership be safe, healthy, have strong wages, and collectively bargain, it’s telling its really about a bunch of leaders keeping power… while a small handful of a loud minority holding hostage membership.

I can only speak for myself. I believe that every person that is medically able or of age to do so should be vaccinated. It is the only way to end this public health crisis. And I will call out any individual or organization which stands in the way of that regardless of their motives or political leanings.
Sometimes things are exactly as they appear.

While I know those in Council Leadership have in their heads a “super secret plan to support the mandate” their messaging and actions end up coming across as enabling anti-vaxxers and helping prolong the pandemic. They can be both well meaning and wrong at the same time. Along with trying to stay in power of course. But that is connected. They truly believe they are right. And they need to stay in so they can keep being right. They are in a bubble. The blowback from both sides has taken them aback and they’ve basically dug in and doubled down on their course of action.

My “skin in the game” is that I am one of their members and I want them to make sure that I walk into a safe environment where others will not get me sick with a disease that could kill me. This is a workplace safety issue and my union is failing to protect me. They are on the wrong side of this and need to support vaccine mandates not just for some state employees but for all state employees. I would like to see the Governor also expand his mandate to all state employees.
