Bailey says his lieutenant governor will oversee Chicago

Tuesday, Oct 26, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Give him credit, Sen. Bailey is always on-brand

Though the gubernatorial primary isn’t until June 2022, Republican candidates vying for their party’s nomination are already looking for who will be their lieutenant governor. […]

State Sen. Darren Bailey, R-Xenia, said he’s closing in on a selection. His goal, he said, is to return the base of power back to Springfield. To do that, he’s looking for a lieutenant governor to oversee Chicago.

“You know, the ambassador role for the urban areas so they can help hold the Chicago mayor and Chicago politics accountable,” Bailey said.

As a Chicagoan, thanks for the laugh with my morning coffee.

  2. - Cheryl44 - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 8:33 am:

I will not be overseen by someone that guy sends.

  3. - Just Me 2 - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 8:33 am:

Keep in mind that to downstaters “Chicago” is the entire metro region. Can we keep all our money that we send to Springfield then too?

  4. - Thomas Paine - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 8:35 am:

    I don’t speak fluent Eastern Blockish;

When he says “Ambassador” does he mean “Black person”?

    Honest question.

  5. - Chambananon - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 8:38 am:

“the ambassador role for the urban areas”

So Bailey himself will only be responsible for the rural portfolio, then? Governor of the red counties, indeed.

  6. - Norseman - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 8:39 am:

“Ambassador role,” huh. Well, I guess it would seem appropriate to the GOP. Urban areas and responding to their needs are foreign to GOP sensibilities.

Bailey is certainly playing the hate Chicago card heavily.

  7. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 8:39 am:

===“ You know, the ambassador role for the urban areas…”===

The dog whistle is strong here.

    To break it down, this complex dog whistle to the simpleton mind that is Bailey;

Urban - people who don’t look like us

Ambassador - people we don’t see as part of “our” state, guests, “others”, non-citizens that *need* an… ambassador?

    And let’s be even more clear here with this diddy;

===“…help hold the Chicago mayor and Chicago politics accountable.”===

It’s like managing or supervising Chicago… to hold Chicago to a level acceptable to “people like us”

Who exactly is going to be that LG candidate with Bailey… Stephen Miller?

The whole ridiculousness is predicated on “two Illinois” and the old, angry, white, rural need to rule over She-Caw-Go and “urban” areas.

    My goodness.

  8. - Anonish - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 8:42 am:

An ambassador to urban areas. Like what you do with a foreign land.
Yes please send urban areas an overseer. I was actually expecting him to use a few more dog whistles.

  9. - Bruce( no not him) - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 8:42 am:

Chicago is anything north of I-80.
    Right? S/

“Small gubmint” Republican seeks to usurp local authority.

Tell me, Comrade Bailey, what happens to the election results from that area that you find disagreeable?

  11. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 8:44 am:

I’d like to point out one more thing… on its own.

If someone is going to “oversee”… what is that person called who is doing the “overseeing”?

Linguistics here are… well… they make a dog whistle like an industrial strength fog horn you might find in your living room kinda loud… and proud.

  12. - Keyrock - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 8:46 am:

    noun
a person who oversees; supervisor; manager:
    the overseer of a plantation.

  13. - Huh? - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 8:46 am:

And just what is an elected official with no official duties going to tell the mayor of Chicago to do?

What ever it is, I bet the response will be “bite me”.

  14. - Suburban Mom - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 8:53 am:

I feel like these guys are so UNBELIEVABLY close to accidentally stumbling in to making “each county gets only as much tax revenue as it takes in” a reality, and they know it’s a stupid talking point to gin up the base, but the train is going so fast they can’t get off … and a small, petty part of me really wants to see them hoist on their own petard.

  15. - Pundent - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 8:54 am:

Darren Bailey obviously won’t win a general election but the damage he’ll inflict on the ILGOP will live well beyond 2022. The question is whether or not they can recover.

  16. - Diplomatic Exchange - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 8:59 am:

It’ll be easy to spot Bailey’s lt. gov/ambassador.

He’ll be the one in the lifted diesel Dodge 4X4 rollin’ coal on LSD with confederate flags mounted in the bed.

It’s the official state vehicle of the Bailey admin.

  17. - Give Us Barabbas - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 9:01 am:

Understandable mistake; he mis- translated the word “commisar” from his handlers.

  18. - crazybleedingheart - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 9:01 am:

Maybe IL GOP would be less of a clown show if they didn’t let their members run at the mouth about “conservative” ideas like making local elected officials somehow accountable to state government rather than to their constituents

But it’s unclear whether there are any adults left to teach Civics 101

  19. - Excitable Boy - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 9:03 am:

Oh please please pick Proft. I’ll knock doors for you in the primary, I promise.

  20. - Flyin' Elvis'-Utah Chapter - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 9:03 am:

“The question is whether or not they can recover.”

From being a super minority party that doesn’t hold one state office?

    Shouldn’t be too difficult.

  21. - Grimlock - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 9:05 am:

    Alan Keyes?

  22. - West Side the Best Side - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 9:07 am:

Wait, I thought Republicans were opposed to governors acting like dictators and overseeing things. Or does that just apply to trying to save lives during a pandemic?

  23. - NIU Grad - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 9:08 am:

Talk about accountability. Nothing will scare a Chicago Mayor more than a Republican Lt. Governor…

  24. - Skeptic - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 9:09 am:

Well, when Illinois kicks Chicago out of the state, it’ll need an ambassador. /s

  25. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 9:11 am:

Proft brings that bedrock solid 7% with him, and Amy Jacobson who could be the press flack for the new She-Caw-Go ambassador as they both leave the lucrative job of flame-throwing on a radio show designed to complain about a state they both live in and earn money bad mouthing while giggling at those who take the schtick seriously.

Bailey doesn’t want to make Illinois better, Bailey wants to make Illinois a homogeneous land of division and discrimination… through recognition of a “second state” Bailey himself can’t relate to as a human being… and needs another to relate for him.

I dunno, running as a closed minded, unrelateable, angry white male isn’t how I’d see someone winning statewide, but Bailey sees two states and embraces it, a vision I can’t see as acceptable.

  26. - Huh? - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 9:13 am:

So beetle wants to send an “ambassador” to Chicago.

What is the over/under on how long that person is declared persona non grata and kicked out of town?

  27. - Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 9:19 am:

Something tells me that treating Chicago like a third world country needing oversight is not the recipe to get the votes needed to be elected Governor, when the vast majority of the votes are in the Chicago area. But carry on.

  28. - Nazgul - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 9:19 am:

Darren Bailey was caught using the N word in College.

First off, I don’t want nobody nobody sent.

Second, since the vast majority of economic activity in the state is in the area to be “overseen” by his LG, what exactly will the governor be doing? Asking for a state.

Will his first Executive Order be reaffirming that the state capitol is in Springfield?

“the ambassador role for the urban areas”

    I nominate Dr. William Brydon.

    – MrJM

  41. - Levois J - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 9:55 am:

Well I like the idea, but what does he mean to oversee and keep Chicago accountable? He might want to explain that a little bit. And an ambassador for urban areas? Hmmm curious!

  42. - Lake Villa Township - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 9:56 am:

Blago is going to be his LG, calling it now lol.
On the real though I was theorizing who would be the most electable theoretical LG pick for Bailey a few days ago and settled upon McCombie.

  43. - Annonin' - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 10:05 am:

Seems like a natural fit for the man in the $1K suits — Kenny Dunkin’ (BTW 2Piece now in national ads for that “no drug” pain relief stuff so she probably can’t be part of the team

  44. - Amalia - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 10:08 am:

wow. guess he’s gonna need someone to handle a non Chicago matter cause murder is way up in Peoria.

  45. - Rudy’s teeth - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 10:08 am:

Oh, Darren. The proposal to appoint an overseer to manage Chicago’s mayor is so archaic. A comms team would be a plus as these blunders create doubts as to your capacity to manage an entire state.

Is there no plan to campaign in Chicago. A stop at Manny’s for the corned beef sandwich and the ensuing fundraiser would be a spot for a meet and greet. The ‘ole campaign bus won’t be parked on Jefferson Street in Chicago after all.

I am a fairly religious person and although it is probably sacrilegious, I now will include a prayer that Mr. Bailey wins the GOP primary so that the “party of Lincoln” gets what it truly deserves.

  48. - Montrose - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 10:59 am:

Nothing gets you votes like saying “I won’t have anything to do with the majority of the state.”

  49. - Roadrager - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 11:53 am:

Aldermen Jim Gardiner, John Napolitano, Nick Sposato, and Ray Lopez have made it know they are available for the ambassadorship.

  50. - Flapdoodle - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 12:00 pm:

Kudos to MrJayEm for the Dr. William Brydon reference — a martyr to perseverance in the service of a dubious and lost cause if ever there was one.

  51. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 12:05 pm:

    Rich,

You should consider the Darren Bailey LG nomination in today’s QOTD.

  52. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 12:07 pm:

If one ever thought Bailey was serious about being governor, and I am not sure why anyone would think that, this little ditty surely has disabused anyone of that thought.

But, I would love to see Basiley in the general. The adds from this little gem write themselves.

Sanat, I have been good, pleased grant me this one request.

  53. - Wheaton - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 1:16 pm:

This is objectively racist and offensive. “Oversee Chicago” “ambassador role for the urban areas.” I am ashamed to be a Republican. It’s bad enough to have Jeanne Ives shooting her mouth off making the party look bad, but this is not helpful towards restoring two party rule. The fact that he will not be called out by the IL GOP for this speaks volumes about how far the party has fallen.

  54. - thechampaignlife - Tuesday, Oct 26, 21 @ 1:16 pm:

===Nothing gets you votes like saying “I won’t have anything to do with the majority of the state.”===

He is going for the county votes. By that metric, he has a solid chance at a plurality of counties.

    This made me laugh.

    Well played.

I know we like to joke here but this is a great message for his primary race.

No way that the paving guy or the other rich guy from California will out crazy Bailey in an effort to pander to the hateful base.
