Libertarian Jesse White running to succeed Jesse White

Tuesday, Jan 11, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller

* One of those stories that I was going to post and then completely forgot about. Argh! But this might harm Democrats in November if the SoS election is a really close race. Here’s Andrew Adams at the State Journal-Register

The Libertarian Party of Illinois, a party with eight elected officials across Illinois, is running a candidate for secretary of state.

His name is Jesse White.

If that rings a bell, it’s the same name as current Secretary of State Jesse White, a Democrat. […]

Why are the Libertarians putting forward a candidate with the same name as the current secretary of state?

“Total coincidence,” said Steve Suess, the chair of the Libertarian Party of Illinois.

Sure, Steve. Just a massive coinkydink.

The political spirit of Madigan lives on. He was nothing if not a great teacher of strategy.

  2. - OneMan - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:20 pm:

Do they just need one candidate to hit a specific %, in a single statewide race to qualify as a ‘party’?

I would put my money on them hitting that % this time.

  3. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:20 pm:

Along the lines of some of the outgoing 50th Senate District voters probably confusing Sam McCann with Sam Cahnman (the former Springfield alderman with a sordid personal history) when McCann was first moved into the 50th.

  4. - Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:20 pm:

From the article: “we’re gonna get accusations that we’re trying to defraud voters…”

Ya think? Not being able to, you know, actually produce the candidate might be a tipoff.

  5. - The Real Downstate - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:23 pm:

I wonder if this could hurt the GOP too? I mean, obviously just having a Libertarian on the ballot takes away some conservative votes from the GOP. But there were obviously a significant amount of independents and Republicans voting for White in general elections. If we assume that some Ds will vote for this White assuming he’s the incumbent, one could argue that just as many Rs might do the same.

  6. - The Real Downstate - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:24 pm:

We also almost has Sam McCann vs Steve McClure lol

  7. - Anne Onymous - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:26 pm:

My tinfoil theory is this is why Lori Lightfoot is Mayor of Chicago.

That election occurred shortly after Sen. Kimberly LightFORD spearheaded the minimum wage increase. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of voters saw the name Lightfood on the ballot, thought it was Lightford, and voted based on that.

  8. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:27 pm:

===thought it was Lightford, and voted===

    lol

    She won every ward. C’mon.

  9. - The Real Downstate - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:31 pm:

This also reminded me of when a Mike Madigan was Scott Bennett’s opponent for re-election. Bennett was thrilled to tell voters he was running against Mike Madigan haha

This makes my mind drift back to simpler times 20 years ago, and Durbin/Durkin going head to head

=== “The Distinguished Gentlemen” was 30 years ahead of its time. ===

Yeah, I had the same thought.

Here in McHenry County, the Libertarians are established political party at county-level.

Maybe in 2022, they’ll become statewide established by hitting at least 5% statewide?

  20. - Amalia - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:54 pm:

laughing so hard. some people voting will be swayed.

  21. - natty lite - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:58 pm:

Both parties enraged they didn’t find that guy first.

Remember that staffer who worked in Republican Gov administrations in the 90s named Mike Madigan? Always thought he should have run against Madigan.

  22. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:15 pm:

Dr. Suess, I mean Steve Suess says it a coincidence, but it could cause a greater incidence
of voters confused by this name being misused.

  23. - Dotnonymous - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:25 pm:

Will the real Jesse White please stand up…and do a somersault…that should settle any pretenders hash.

  24. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:37 pm:

I mean next thing you know the Republicans will put up a “Mike Madigan” in the 22nd.

  25. - Anne Onymous - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:39 pm:

    === She won every ward. C’mon. ===

    Not in the first round…

  26. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:40 pm:

=== Not in the first round…===

    Oh.

    When it mattered.

  27. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:55 pm:

==Remember that staffer who worked in Republican Gov administrations in the 90s named Mike Madigan?==

IIRC the GOP’s Mike Madigan was part of the Madigan family from Lincoln and Logan County. Which had a long career in local, state, and federal politics too. Including Edward R. Madigan’s service as Bush 41’s Secretary of Agriculture.

  28. - What's in a name - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:57 pm:

Is Steve Suess a doctor of any kind? The Grinch who stole the election.

  29. - Dysfunction Junction - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:59 pm:

I’ve seen it work the other way. Anyone remember the unfortunate Jim Ryan/George Ryan confusion in the early 2000s?

  30. - Bruce( no not him) - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 5:01 pm:

I’ve voted for Jesse White many times. I’m thrilled to continue voting for him.
Why did he switch to the Libertarian Party? S/

  31. - Just Wondering - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 5:04 pm:

Will the other Jesse’s Chief of Staff also be named Benigno?

  32. - Anon - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 5:16 pm:

@Dance Band, thank you for the laugh. I chuckled out loud at that.

  33. - someonehastosayit - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 5:35 pm:

This story reminds me of when Green Party candidate for Governor, Rich Whitney had his name “accidentally” listed as “Rich Whitey” in some precincts.
As someone else said, you never know the possible outcome of such shenanigans until after the election.

  34. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 5:39 pm:

===“accidentally” listed as “Rich Whitey” in some precincts===

I think it was all of Chicago.

  35. - Springfieldish - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 6:07 pm:

    Aren’t Libertarians just back-pedaling Republicans?

  36. - BCOSEC - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 6:08 pm:

Rich: Have you walked door to door campaigning? If not, maybe you should try it to get a feel for how many completely confused and uninformed there are among us.

  37. - Anonish - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 6:16 pm:

“Vote Jeff Johnson, the name you know.”
    -The Distinguished Gentleman

  38. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 6:56 pm:

===get a feel for how many completely confused and uninformed===

    lol

    Did I suggest otherwise?

  39. - BCOSEC - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 7:39 pm:

No, not really. Maybe the comment above about confusion over the last name of the Chicago mayor.

My experience has been never underestimate the lack of knowledge and general confusion. I have a lot of good stories from 6 months of door to door.

The best ones are when they start really blasting your opponent when they really are talking about you, but think he is you and you are him. Good prep for learning how to walk a fine line. Lol!!

When we think of catering, the first thing that pops into the minds of
many people is food. However, catering isn’t just about food.
It includes every detail of the event. From the food you
serve up to the very last aspect of the decoration All of them are part of a catering service.

There are a variety of reasons why parties and other
social gatherings are held occasionally. Private parties and intimate gatherings
are celebrated during the holidays of Christmas,
New Year, graduation and birthdays. However, there are
those who choose to open these events to their friends, co-workers
as well as acquaintances. When this happens, catering services are now demanded.
Absolutely, you can’t simply make the arrangements on your own and with the assistance
of a professional catering service, you’ll have a
blast at any party.Catering services are believed to be some of the most successful commercial opportunities in the present since the services
are highly sought after. For business or personal events catering is essential in making everybody present happy.
