Question of the day
Tuesday, Jan 11, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller
* Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot…
Earlier today, I tested positive for COVID-19. I am experiencing cold-like symptoms but otherwise feel fine which I credit to being vaccinated and boosted. I will continue to work from home while following the CDC guidelines for isolation. This is an urgent reminder for folks to get vaccinated and boosted as it’s the only way to beat this pandemic.
Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder also tested positive, has mild symptoms and is working from home.
* The Question: How many people do you know personally who have contracted the virus since omicron hit? Explain.
- LoyalVirus - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 2:49 pm:
too. damn. many.
- Frank talks - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 2:51 pm:
Want to say at least 10 different people. All different circles of friends and family as well. So not just like one big group had it and gave to each other.
They all are pretty sure they know where and probably when they got it. No one has come up super sick from it mostly asymptomatic or mild symptoms then 10 days at home. Cases among people I know started happening around Thanksgivng.
- Nefarius Veneer - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 2:52 pm:
Half my household.
The other half.
- AlfondoGonz - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 2:52 pm:
A ton. Including my dad.
- Montrose - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 2:52 pm:
I can keep track. Everywhere I turn - work, family, friends - someone has caught it. All vaccinated/boosted. All having a case like the Mayor.
- SouthernCentrist - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 2:53 pm:
10 people. 3 of whom are close friends. 2 asymptotic and the rest mild symptoms. All vaccinated and half are boosted. Could have been much worse if not for the vaccine.
- JS Mill - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 2:56 pm:
I can’t count, but I work in a school. The vaxxed and especially the boosted have been asymptomatic or extremely mild. Un vaxxed have been mild to ER visit.
Get vaxxed and boosted.
- SWIL_Voter - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 2:58 pm:
I can count 11 off the top of my head right now. 2 families of four and 3 individuals either recovering or currently sick, one who tested positive today.
- New Day - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 2:58 pm:
I lost count. Easily 15-20 including myself and most of my family.
- Ducky LaMoore - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:01 pm:
Fortunately, just 2. One being in my daughter’s class. The other, my brother-in-law, who has had a rough go. He wasn’t vaccinated and refused to go to the doctor. He ended up in the hospital, naturally. But he is out now and convalescing at home. He is very weak and can’t get around well. It is going to be a long recovery.
- The Opinions Bureau - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:02 pm:
I stopped at 12 households, all of which have had at least two people get it. Got word of another just a few minutes ago.
- Peanut Gallery - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:02 pm:
The week or two before Christmas, myself with a mild case. In the weeks since, I can count up to 15-20 without really thinking about it.
- Ryan - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:07 pm:
Many, my kids just today. Waiting on my test…
- Jabes - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:08 pm:
Around 5, most of them prior to vaccinations being available.
- Amalia - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:08 pm:
just a couple.
- Cool Papa Bell - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:09 pm:
two dozen?? too many.
- Leslie K - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:10 pm:
At least 20. We had a cluster in my office, a cluster in a second office location, and some friends. I don’t know the vaccination status of all, but mild to no symptoms for those I know are vaxxed and boosted, expect for one. That person had an underlying lung problem and ended up on oxygen briefly (no ventilator, just oxygen). Fully boosted and recovered completely now.
- GoBulls - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:10 pm:
Probably close to half the families I know with kids have a case in the household, and another 25% are currently quarantining due to exposure.
- SSL - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:11 pm:
Around a dozen. All were vaccinated and most boosted. Mild symptoms with one exception. That person was quite sick for a week.
- Wensicia - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:17 pm:
Coming back from winter break in my school, over a dozen educators out with COVID-19.
- Montrose - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:20 pm:
Also, both I and my wife felt bad for multiple days, but got multiple negative at-home test results. Getting a PCR appointment was impossible. Did we have Covid? Did we not? I really don’t know.
- MSIX - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:20 pm:
Nearly 200 at EIU in just this past week.
- Chicago Blue - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:27 pm:
My wife brought it home from a CPS school last Tuesday. Her and our 2 year old started having some cold symptoms and tested positive Friday night. My 6 year old daughter and I tested positive on Sunday night. My parents who watch the girls tested positive today and have had some symptoms for the last 2 days. We’re all vaccinated and boosted outside of my daughters. Thanks a lot Lori for ‘following the science’ and opening up the schools after the holiday break.
- HangingOn - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:28 pm:
Guy at work and his wife had it, nobody told us until after 2 weeks. My eldest sister just had it for the 2nd time. She got it early on, long before vaccines, has long COVID, and her and her husband just had it again. Both vaxxed. Lost my Mom’s cousin a couple weeks ago to it. I always knew her as Aunt Nancy. Her and her sisters called themselves The Golden Girls.
- Oxfordian - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:33 pm:
At least 20 people since the week before Christmas. A family member had it twice in the last 60 days.
- West Side the Best Side - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:34 pm:
Maybe that explains why she was so cranky dealing with the CTU … Nah.
- ;) - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 3:56 pm:
16 total, so far, since December 18th: At least 15, all vaccinated. And 1 person, just yesterday, from Florida, who is not vaccinated.
- Bourbon Street - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:00 pm:
15, off the top of my head. All vaxxed and most boosted, so (as of today) no one has been hospitalized. Most have recovered.
- 47th Ward - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:08 pm:
In my family of four, two have tested positive in the past two weeks. I got my booster in mid-December, and have been tested four times since then. All negative.
- JoanP - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:10 pm:
One. I know someone else who had a breakthrough infection, but that was before Omicron.
- DownSouth - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:16 pm:
Honestly - I have lost count the last several days - best guess at present, (pending the next text or phone call) is at least 17.
- Pundent - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:17 pm:
2 out of the 3 people in my household. I was the negative result and I’m not sure that it wasn’t just a point in time as I could have very well brought the disease in without knowing it. Beyond that I seem to encounter someone every day that’s tested positive. And others that complain of cold symptoms but consider it to be no big deal and don’t bother getting tested.
Fortunately for my group we’re all fully vaxed and boosted so life goes on as normal.
- Huh? - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:22 pm:
My office executive secretary died of it. A co-worker had it.
Nobody in my immediate family has reported anything yet.
- Steve - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:23 pm:
I know 10 people. 4 of the 10 have gotten COVID twice. 3 were unvaxxed , 1 was. All 4 never had to go to the hospital or see a doctor in person. However, 5 of the 10 said it was very unpleasant.
- froganon - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:28 pm:
Ten and counting, all fully vaxed and boosted. Half with mild symptoms, 5, including my 98 year old mother have been really sick. My Mom was on oxygen and hospitalized and is now home and covid free but very weak. My brother is barely recovered after 3 weeks of bed rest and fluids. No deaths but this hasn’t been an easy or quick for those who got a bad case.
- Enviro - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:28 pm:
We have several close relatives who have very recently had Covid. One is still very sick.
Some have been vaccinated and boosted and some have not.
- cermak_rd - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:45 pm:
Since omicron hit? About a dozen at the office. All of them vaxed (can’t speak for boosters.) All recovering sans hospital. Lost a member of the community band to it (vax status unknown and no idea if Delta or Omicron).
- Unionman - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 4:50 pm:
Both my brothers and I got it and our kids. Too bad none of us was together for the holidays to at least have it have been worth it. Now we will get together because we can’t get sick from each other.
- Bruce( no not him) - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 5:05 pm:
I honestly think my wife and I both had it before Xmas. We both had what we thought were just colds. That was before the symptoms of omicron became known.
By the time we figured out the symptoms, we were over it and at that point didn’t figure testing would do any good.
- Original Rambler - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 5:35 pm:
My entire household. Only one asymptomatic. Unable to figure out where we got it. We’re pretty mask compliant and don’t go to super spreader type events. Will now be sporting N95 and KN95 masks.
- In_The_Middle - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 5:36 pm:
About 6, but I suspect alot more because they’ve been sick but either couldn’t go get tested because of lack of transportation or didn’t want to get tested.
- Mason born - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 5:45 pm:
Wife has it now. Her whole clinic is about 60% positive of the 25 of them 2 we’re unvaxed, my wife is fully vaxed. Her symptoms are, according to her, a head cold/sinus infection with fatigue. At this point I’ll probably have it next week. Our 4 yr old had it before Christmas and it didn’t spread to her brothers or us we think that might have been delta and our vaccines covered it.
- yinn - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 6:18 pm:
Exactly 10, including one friend who died the day after my birthday last year, which is coming up soon. Doesn’t include SO having it twice, or SO’s colleagues, who are medical professionals, whom I care about even having not met them in person. Worried about my teacher friends now.
- RNUG - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 6:40 pm:
Can’t say specifically to omnicron, but quite a few recently. Maybe 4 or 5 people prior to November, 2021. Now at least 6 or 8 since November, and likely quite a few more that didn’t bother to get tested over their cold / flu symptoms.
- Circular Persective - Tuesday, Jan 11, 22 @ 8:42 pm:
Six. Five of them at work. That’s five out of eleven people in my department.
One of them went to the hospital for Christmas and didn’t come back. The others are riding it out at home.
