If It snows and Casimir Pulaski doesn’t see his shadow, can I go back to bed?

  2. - Rich Miller - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 8:36 am:

    ===can I go back to bed? ===

    Yes.

  3. - JoanP - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 8:40 am:

It was 70º on Saturday, and now it’s snowing and there’s a winter weather advisory.

Also, gas (regular unleaded) is now at $4.99.

  4. - Responsa - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 8:41 am:

Cost of gas kind of escalated over the weekend,

  5. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 8:43 am:

The election gods want their tribute, the weather is a gauntlet that must be overcome, come petition time… until filing.

    Nothing changes.

  6. - ItsMillerTime - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 8:43 am:

I passed by a board of elections office and shall a group people sitting outside of it in folding chairs. Guess it’s that time of year again.

  7. - JS Mill - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 8:45 am:

=Cost of gas kind of escalated over the weekend,=

Mary Miller says “you are welcome.”

  8. - Anyone Remember - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 8:56 am:

In early 2008 gas was $4.84 a gallon. In current terms that’d be $6.45. Just sayin’ …

  9. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 8:56 am:

Springfield Mayor Jim “I Ain’t Wearing A Mask Anymore From March 1st Forward” Langfelder has announced he’s running for a 3rd term as mayor next spring:

Happy Pulaski day, especially for those lucky enough to get the day off.

  11. - BTO2 - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 9:06 am:

Covid is not over, 5 extended family members are positive and aunt is hospitalized.

  12. - Huh? - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 9:09 am:

Made 10 half pints of maple syrup over the weekend.

No magic or mystery involved. If you can boil water, you can make maple syrup.

  13. - Huh? - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 9:22 am:

“Happy Pulaski day, especially for those lucky enough to get the day off”

Got all excited about having the day off. Was crushed when read Pulaski Day isn’t an official State holiday with day off.

  14. - cermak_rd - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 9:22 am:

    Huh?,

Yes, but where do you get the jar with the akwardly small handle or alternately the inconveniently shaped glass maple leave to store it in?

But seriously do you put it in mason jars or barrels to keep?

  15. - MaddyMoon - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 9:24 am:

    =Covid is not over=

I’m sorry to hear that you have sick family. My family suffered through Omicron in January. But it is worth noting that Covid Zeroism is over. take a page from the Governor and the Mayor and accept that we have to just live with this thing

  16. - Huh? - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 9:32 am:

Cermack - I use regular canning jars. Easy to use, cheap, reusable.

The maple leaf bottles are available at any of the maple syrup equipment suppliers.

Funks Grove, South of Bloomington, is a commercial maple syrup producer.

  17. - cermak_rd - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 9:49 am:

    Maddymoon,

Yes covid zero is no longer an attainable goal. However, every person now has to protect themselves as best they can.

Hearing of someone who has sick family is a good reminder to mask up or not enter that restaurant or whatever steps the individual needs to take.

And to BTO2, I am sorry your family is ill. I just lost my brother-in-law last month to this wretched virus.

  18. - Amalia - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 9:53 am:

great warm weather on Saturday, but today….the radiators at the top of the house are now cold. they got fooled just like us.

  19. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 9:58 am:

===and accept that we have to just live with this thing===

… which means being fully vaccinated and boosted, and following protocols, not unlike any illness, which include staying home when positive, not infecting folks with utter ignorance or brazen self-loathing to own the libs.

    That’s what you meant, amirite?

  20. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 10:14 am:

==Was crushed when read Pulaski Day isn’t an official State holiday with day off.==

If I have time, I could research the Pulaski Day debate back in 1985, but anyone know why that day’s statewide observance was only for Schools (before districts could start applying for holiday waivers in 1996), and not a State Employee holiday? Surprised AFSCME or other state employee unions never seemed to push for adding Pulaski Day to the state legal holiday lists if schools got it off originally (unless they unsuccessfully tried to years ago but not since I’ve been in state employment).

    Not complaining but just curious.

  21. - Anyone Remember - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 10:22 am:

    NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham

IIRC, the very first year it was a paid holiday for State Employees. Enough of an uproar the next year it was repealed. And, with all that, AFSCME still endorsed Thompson in 1986.

Also, in the Thompson era, the first Wednesday of March was the budget address. Not exactly the best time of the year for State Employees to be unavailable to legislative staff.

  22. - fisher22 - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 10:23 am:

Has anyone heard about merit comp employees starting to receive salary adjustments?

  23. - Demoralized - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 10:55 am:

==which include staying home when positive==

I think that’s the big thing now. In the past if you didn’t feel good you may have gone to work anyway. Now, you need to be smart and stay home. The days of going to work with a “cold” have to be gone now.

  24. - ILL - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 11:18 am:

INI - what a win from the Illini last night!

  25. - Earnest - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 11:38 am:

-Cost of gas kind of escalated over the weekend

Perhaps this will make you feel better–the Illinois gas tax has dropped from 13% of the cost of a gallon of gas in 2018 to just 8% in 2022. The mailers just write themselves.

  26. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 12:41 pm:

Just got an “exciting announcement” email that the ALPL Foundation has been “rebranded,” as the Lincoln Presidential Foundation. All that excitement for basically a shortened title.

  27. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 12:43 pm:

==Just got an “exciting announcement” email that the ALPL Foundation has been “rebranded,” as the Lincoln Presidential Foundation.==

When I saw that email I was actually hoping it was something more “exciting” such as “We finally officially verified the source of the Taper Collection Hat and yes indeed Lincoln wore it at least one time.”

  28. - Mike - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 4:07 pm:

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/breaking/ct-chicago-public-schools-mask-mandate-20220307-dp2krgaoljf4tosp4pp5rn6wyu-story.html Looking forward to the upcoming CTU sponsored campaign for school choice.

==“We finally officially verified the source of the Taper Collection Hat and yes indeed Lincoln wore it at least one time.”==

If I was to speculate (and there’s no historical verification on this, but I could have seen something like this happen), Lincoln wore it one time around 1857 but Mary Todd Lincoln took it away from him and took it to the outhouse after she flew off the handle at AL for his daring to criticize the latest MTL shopping spree at Tinsley’s Store. Where she bought at least two of everything in the entire store.

  30. - Lurker - Monday, Mar 7, 22 @ 11:03 pm:

We in these parts will forgive you for misspelling sirup.

“Funks Grove, South of Bloomington, is a commercial maple syrup producer.”
