The outta catch the DGA’s attention

  2. - dd - Thursday, May 5, 22 @ 7:44 pm:

It doesn’t matter how much money Griffin pours in. It’s over. Alito’s opinion ends it. Hey Kenny there are some things that trump money. Like the freedom to travel from state to state without the worry that someone will seek to have you imprisoned for having an abortion or a procedure for a partial miscarriage or a spontaneous abortion which happens. Your Dred Scott buds have exposed what they want. No thanks.

  3. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, May 5, 22 @ 7:49 pm:

Where is Irvin now… $45 million? $50 million?

    I missed the boat again.

    To the post,

More cash to define Bailey, redefine Sullivan, and work around abortion, even if the ruling comes before the primary ends.

I’ll be interested in how they go about these condo weeks, and we are now talking in weeks…

They need ~ 33-37% to pull this off, they get to 40%, that might be “ball game”

So what if 60+% doesn’t like Irvin… it could be enough.

That’s where $25 mil right now comes in handy.

  4. - Sad! - Thursday, May 5, 22 @ 7:54 pm:

Richard Irvin and his band of Bruce bros needs $45 million to beat Darren Bailey having already outspent him 39 to 1?

Bad candidate. Overhyped team. Illinois Republicans should reject them all.

  5. - Excitable Boy - Thursday, May 5, 22 @ 8:00 pm:

I don’t find it likely to happen, but wonder if he’s worried about a potential Trump nod to Bailey.

  6. - Real - Thursday, May 5, 22 @ 8:10 pm:

Waste of money. I wonder if this money was given before the scotus leak.

  7. - dd - Thursday, May 5, 22 @ 8:19 pm:

    Dear Ken,
To whom does the female population apply for our safe passage documents? Just asking for a friend. 25 million is peanuts in this fight. Ken is just placing a bet and weighing the risks. Hey moron it’s over.

  8. - Roman - Thursday, May 5, 22 @ 8:58 pm:

Gotta be close to the largest donation ever from one person to one campaign, not counting self-financing, right? I did some googling and came up empty.

  9. - JS Mill - Thursday, May 5, 22 @ 8:59 pm:

Don’t sell the messaging power that money brings short. Yes, Irvin is a flawed candidate, many contradictions and exaggerations. Truth is not real important to him. But all of the candidates are flawed or have weaknesses. Even the governor, and if I were him I would not let up.

JB also gave his campaign 90 million of inherited money.

What sort of democracy lets billionaires pick the governor via bidding war?

  12. - The Old Man - Friday, May 6, 22 @ 7:53 am:

I would give it to if I could afford it. Bailey we do not need.

  13. - Candy Dogood - Friday, May 6, 22 @ 8:45 am:

If is net worth is 26.2 billion dollars, isn’t this basically just 0.09% of his net worth?

If I made a $100 or $200 contribution it wouldn’t be news. Lets keep it in perspective, folks.

  14. - Bubba Gump Shrimp Emporium and Lasso Factory - Friday, May 6, 22 @ 8:46 am:

Let’s rephrase @illinoyed’s question: What sort of system let’s people give money to the candidates of their choosing? A democratic one.

  15. - Back to the Future - Friday, May 6, 22 @ 8:59 am:

In a state where government policy has been for sale, we are probably going to break records on spending.
In many states the media provides balance to 1%ers and special interest groups, but in the Illinois governors race we seem to mainly be getting little more than echos of commercial advertising.
For example, in the Democratic primary we Dems have a choice in retired Army Major Beverly Miles who gets zero reporting from our media. She has a very impressive life story which would be a solid example for young people of someone using education, hard work and service to our country to really live the American dream.

  16. - Oswego Willy - Friday, May 6, 22 @ 9:06 am:

    - Back to the Future -

Are Dems really that dissatisfied with Pritzker?

Dissatisfied enough that any challenger deserves oxygen in free media.

  17. - Back to the Future - Friday, May 6, 22 @ 9:23 am:

    OW
    See your point.
Thinking the media has an obligation to educate the public on the choices that are available to them. Of course, we have some very good reporters around, but the zero reporting on Retired Major Miles is just IMHO an example of how our media outlets fail to do their jobs. I hope this is not taken as whining about the news folks. I just think they should meet their obligation to educate voters on the choices that available to them.
In answer to your question on whether or not Dems are happy with Pritzker, his failure to elect his choice for President of the Senate, his loss in the IDP election, his overwhelming failed tax idea and things like his “stuff happens” comment regarding the Veterans problem lead me to believe that lots of Dems are not happy with JBP.

  18. - Arsenal - Friday, May 6, 22 @ 9:25 am:

==wonder if he’s worried about a potential Trump nod to Bailey==

    Good campaigns worry about everything.

==Are Dems really that dissatisfied with Pritzker?==

No. In fact, by and large, Dems are very happy with Pritzker.

  19. - Mister Ed - Friday, May 6, 22 @ 9:43 am:

Billionaires and millionaires should help Illinois build affordable housing, needed medical assistance, food, and clean water for our residents instead of buying politicians. Really irks me that their greed does our state no good.

  20. - Oswego Willy - Friday, May 6, 22 @ 9:50 am:

===lead me to believe that lots of Dems are not happy with JBP.===

    If you have polling…

===…but the zero reporting on Retired Major Miles is just IMHO an example of how our media outlets fail to do their jobs.===

It’s called *earned* media for a reason, no one is guaranteed coverage, and what is the message to Dems that Pritzker can’t get a majority of primary voters? Looking at Ives, Ives had a message to primary voters, and also had cash, which brings this back… “to the post”…

Financial viability to get a message out, even if it’s one patron, allows a candidate to make a case, and then it’s up to voters to decide.

Bailey, Sullivan, and Rabine getting swamped by another $25 million, it’s not like those three can’t get a message *out* but they need about $9-11 million to do it, and stave off Irvin’s attacks too.

    Free speech, amirite?

  21. - JS Mill - Friday, May 6, 22 @ 10:10 am:

=JB also gave his campaign 90 million of inherited money.=

    Sick burn.

And yet,Illinois is in exponentially better shape than when the free market business men were running things.

  22. - Back to the Future - Friday, May 6, 22 @ 10:11 am:

Get the point on “earning” media coverage.
Having $250 in your account is clearly not a plus.
Some issues that have come up seem to me to be good reasons to call all the candidates and get their opinions.
The media reports on the Veterans home issue but it appears they did not pick up the phone to get an opinion from a veteran who served as a nurse in our Hines Veterans Hospital.
Roe v. Wade is in the news, but where is the coverage of the only woman running for Governor.
The marijuana program that remains a place where blacks, woman and Latinos are excluded would seem to be an area that the media should check in on the only Black Woman who is running for Governor.
Get your point on Pritzker being supported by a lot of Democrats. I just think our media types are not doing a very good job of covering the Governor’s race. They seem to be covering how much Billionaires are spending and not covering issues voters need to know more about.

  23. - Oswego Willy - Friday, May 6, 22 @ 10:19 am:

=== The media reports on the Veterans home issue but it appears they did not pick up the phone to get an opinion from a veteran who served as a nurse in our Hines Veterans Hospital.===

Gotta earn it. The candidate is NOT a viable alternative and has no means or issue to win, in this specific primary.

===Roe v. Wade is in the news, but where is the coverage of the only woman running for Governor.===

Earned. It needs to be earned. Now it’s gender driven?

    Oh. Now it makes sense…

===The marijuana program that remains a place where blacks, woman and Latinos are excluded would seem to be an area that the media should check in on the only Black Woman who is running for Governor.===

So is the candidacy, not viable by any measure, except race and gender? These are odd reasons, given your background supporting Harold Washington?

    ===They seem to be covering…===

… actual viable candidates that by real measures could be the nominee(s) or a governor.

This isn’t a realistic idea to campaigns

That’s why, to try to bring this “back to the post”, the reason $25 million matters, first and last, is it buys credibility and possibility.

Earned media is earned by viable candidates with realistic chances

“Richard Irvin and his band of Bruce bros needs $45 million to beat Darren Bailey having already outspent him 39 to 1? Bad candidate. Overhyped team. Illinois Republicans should reject them all.”

I would add that Bruce Rauner did basically the exact same thing and was also a bad candidate. This is wash, rinse and repeat with Irvin.

  25. - Southern - Friday, May 6, 22 @ 10:29 am:

I think Bailey is a stronger GOP primary candidate than the polls indicate. In GOP circles, he has managed to brand himself as the Trump-ish candidate, even without officially getting a Trump endorsement. Across the country, Republican voters seem more engaged in primaries than ever before, and the Trump allegiance seems to be very important to them. Sure, Irvin was always going to get more money from Griffin, but this is a pretty big check, coming right on the heels of the Vance win in the Ohio primary.

==Richard Irvin and his band of Bruce bros needs $45 million to beat Darren Bailey having already outspent him 39 to 1?==

Prior to March 2018 primaries, JB contributed over $70 million to his own campaign. Are still outraged or have you gotten over it? Guessing the latter.

  27. - Original Rambler - Friday, May 6, 22 @ 3:00 pm:

Free Market, what’s the exchange rate for JB’s inherited dollars to Griffin’s sugar daddy dollars?
