Personally I have no issue with it. If people want to party it up and celebrate their heritage, then go for it. Just don’t make it a public holiday. Looking at you Columbus Day.
From the Article Rich links above: “The battle also played a role in the American Civil War. With Napoleon III defeated and leaving North America, the Confederacy wasn’t able to use the French as an ally to win the war.”
Oh Lord, do not tell Southerners, lest they decide the no longer support Cinco de Mayo.

Well one of the two major political parties is obsessed with Mexico to the point they like to have their people stand on the US side of the Mexican border and gaze at the hundreds of thousands gay, Mexican Muslims storming the borders to take their guns and flags away.

You know what? Just call it Margarita Weekend and lets stop pretending anyone in the US cares about some battle the Mexicans won.

= lets stop pretending anyone in the US cares about some battle the Mexicans won =
People in the US care more about Cinco de Mayo than they do in Mexico.

It’s just another excuse to party, like St. Patrick’s Day, which coincidentally is always on the same day of the week as Cinco de Mayo.

I don’t need an excuse to drink margaritas, but it is nice when everyone decides to drink margaritas together.

First Tom Cross won’t play golf with me, *almost* outright banning me from Fox Bend, now Irvin goes to Cubs-Sox, no invite?
What am I, a mirage?

My French side of my heritage directly related to the French occupation of Mexico after the Battle of Veracruz.
After the French were driven out of Mexico and Maximilian’s execution, my French great grandfather chose to stay.

Cards bounce back to thump the Royals last night. 3-1 against KC’s version of the Cubs this season.

Don’t get my wife going about Sete de Setembro, the Brazilian Independence Day. Makes Mardi Gras look tame.

To Cheryl 44: well said. Margarita weekend. The marketing idea of the year.
