Irvin campaign blames Pritzker for three shot cops

Monday, Jun 6, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Irvin campaign…

After a third police officer was shot in less than a week, the trend of heightened violence and brazen disregard for police shows just how empowered criminals really are in J.B. Pritzker’s Illinois. Yesterday’s shooting comes just days after another officer was shot in the same neighborhood and a U.S. Marshal and his K-9 dog were shot while serving an arrest warrant.

During a press conference Sunday, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown noted a 500 percent increase in offenders shooting at Chicago police officers over the last two-and-a-half years.

A total of five people were killed and 28 people, including the police officer, a two-year-old and a six-year-old, were wounded by shootings across Chicago this weekend. These alarming statistics come after the most violent Memorial Day weekend in the last five years rocked Chicago: nine people were killed and 42 others wounded in the city.

“Criminals are emboldened to the point that they fear no consequences for their actions, even if it comes to shooting police officers,” said Eleni Demertzis, Irvin for Illinois spokesperson. “Unlike the current governor’s weak leadership, Richard Irvin has stood up for and stood with our police, and that is why he has earned their overwhelming support. Our men and women who wear the badge are critical in getting us out of this public safety crisis in Illinois, and Irvin is the best choice to lead them in this dangerous and difficult pursuit.”

Richard Irvin supports cops by saying their written police reports are false.

  2. - Here we go - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 10:39 am:

If this violence shows anything, it’s that Republicans like Irvin need to grow a backbone on gun safety. Where is Irvin on illegal guns flooding into Chicago from Indiana? Is Irvin willing to sit down with Governors of states with lax laws like Iowa and Indiana? Is Irvin willing to speak out on banning AR 15s that endanger the lives of police officers?

  3. - 47th Ward - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 10:39 am:

Irvin is running for the wrong office. Still.

  4. - Roadrager - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 10:40 am:

I imagine Richard Irvin supports cops who refuse to get vaccinated against or tested for COVID-19, as well. Now to take a big sip of my morning coffee and look up the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths for police officers over the last two years.

  5. - Grandson of Man - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 10:44 am:

“Where is Irvin on illegal guns flooding into Chicago from Indiana?”

He supports it, apparently, repeatedly not begrudging Griffin for not only being invested in guns, but substantially increasing investments.

Does Irvin think violent criminals will fear someone who can’t answer a simple yes or no question on whether he voted for Trump, and won’t give an answer on abortion?

  6. - TheInvisibleMan - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 10:46 am:

“emboldened to the point that they fear no consequences for their actions”

    returning the favor?

  7. - Streator Curmudgeon - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 10:49 am:

I’m curious what criminal defense attorney Richard Irvin would say about this. He’s been remarkably silent lately.

  8. - LOL - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 10:49 am:

This messaging really seems to be working for them. Keep it up, best team in America.

  9. - Annonin' - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 10:53 am:

It would be fun to see if Defender “TrickyDick” had any gun cases where the alleged S***head Shooter/Defendant/Client shot at a cop

  10. - Real - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 11:04 am:

The reality is Richard Irvin is using crime and cops as a political gimmick to get in office. His true agenda has nothing to do with crime.

  11. - LOL - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 11:09 am:

    Annonin asked…

    and answered…
“Shortly before becoming mayor of Aurora in 2017 and stepping away from his law practice, for example, he represented a man accused of attacking a police officer. He’s also represented clients accused of kidnapping, domestic violence and sexual assault.”

    Question of the Day Suggestion:

What policy could be adopted by the state or city to curb gun violence in Chicago?

  13. - Sax - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 11:13 am:

What are Ken Griffin’s gun profits looking like lately? Seems like there are a lot of gun crimes taking place which means lots of guns and ammo being sold, all good things for Griffin’s pocketbook. Irvin ready to return all that dough from the guy who profits off the tools of the crime he decries so often?

  14. - Norseman - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 11:14 am:

Ugly, vitriolic and phony rhetoric is standard for the GOP. Irvin has learned his GOP slime lessons well.

  15. - Cool Papa Bell - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 11:14 am:

Republicans turn a blind eye to guns and any possible gun control and then blame Democrats for criminals from using guns.

    Ok.

Unfortunately that logic or lack of it seems to work for a portion of people.

  16. - Boone's is Back - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 11:23 am:

I don’t see how the Governor’s office has anything to do with CPD, the State’s Attorney’s Office, etc. This just seems like a callous shot to gain political points off an officer being shot in the line of duty.

Careful…becuase pritzker do want require his ISP to be vaccinated either…fact

“You write up a report every time you make a arrest, isn’t that so? And those reports are complete, accurate, and truthful? And they are complete, accurate, and truthful because you need to rely on them later, and right? But in your testimony today you mentioned some things you didn’t include in your report, didn’t you?” -every single defense attorney every single time they cross examine a cop

“Criminals are emboldened to the point that they fear no consequences for their actions, even if it comes to shooting police officers,” said Eleni Demertzis.

This is simply not true. Are bad people emboldened? Yes. But not because they fear prison or consequences. They are emboldened because they simply don’t care for another human’s life. It’s that simple. Zero respect in their lives.

  20. - H-W - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 11:31 am:

==shows just how empowered criminals really are in J.B. Pritzker’s Illinois.==

Right. I am sure criminologists have found that criminals study governors, and wait until they have the right governor before they start shooting.

This is just plain “Tom-Foolery.” Governor’s may own some things, but criminals do not follow politics when deciding whether or not to own guns or use guns. They do not follow politics when deciding whether or not to resist arrest.

Agree, but lets stop trying to shift blame and stop blaming what some call lax laws in indiana.

  22. - JS Mill - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 11:33 am:

So Irvin is using a tragedy to score political points? Hmmm, I thought he was against that? Irv seems to be a bit of a hypocrite.

  23. - northsider (the original) - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 11:34 am:

Irvin’s campaign is funded with bloody gun money. He can talk about this when he returns every Griffin dime.

  24. - Roadrager - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 11:34 am:

This reminds me, I saw my first Rabine billboard this weekend. It has JB on it and says “Welcome to Cook County: Crime Capitol (sp) of the Nation.”

The billboard is in central DuPage County.

  25. - Curious citizen - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 11:40 am:

Maybe if the US, especially Chicago, had fewer guns then fewer cops would be shot.

  26. - vern - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 11:46 am:

Irvin might have less help from the cops than he thinks. If it’s a tight race with low turnout, he’ll need every vote from the city he can get. But the FOP is gonna be trying to get a good number of members to take D ballots against Martwick. Could be a decent number of lost Irvin votes in that crowd.

  27. - ChicagoBars - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 11:48 am:

Where’s that Rabine billboard? I need to see that.

  28. - Lucky Pierre - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 11:59 am:

Don’t blame the party in charge of all three branches of state government, Both US Senators, 13 of 18 Congressmen, for the 30 year high in shootings or the 40 year high in inflation.

==Where’s that Rabine billboard? I need to see that.==

In Downers Grove, visible on eastbound Ogden past Fairview, by the shopping center with the Trader Joe’s and Goodwill.

  30. - Amalia - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 12:05 pm:

Irvin is a caricature of a candidate. he’s terrible in debates. and smug.

==Don’t blame the party in charge of all three branches of state government, Both US Senators, 13 of 18 Congressmen, for the 30 year high in shootings or the 40 year high in inflation.==

Don’t blame the party in charge of all three branches of government, both US Senators, and 23 of 36 members of the House for the deaths of 19 children in Texas.

See what an absolutely ignorant argument you are trying to make LP? Pathetic.

===Don’t blame the party in charge of all three branches of state government, Both US Senators, 13 of 18 Congressmen, for the 30 year high in shootings or the 40 year high in inflation.===

OK. Violent crime is on the rise across America and inflation is increasing around the world.

Sorry LP, but the Illinois Democrats just aren’t as powerful as you make them out to be.

  33. - Chicago Blue - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 12:28 pm:

    Hey Lucky,

Who’s in charge of Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and all the other states in the country that had record shooting #s in 2021? Did Pritzker do that too? What a silly argument for a silly person.

And regarding inflation, Who’s in charge of Poland? Who’s in charge of the UK? Their inflation rates are even higher than in the US.

  34. - JS Mill - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 12:28 pm:

=Don’t blame the party in charge of all three branches of state government=

    Ok, I won’t.

  35. - West Side the Best Side - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 12:58 pm:

AlfondoGonz - Always thought the best police report from the arresting officer would be: “Observed offender, arrested same.” No impeachment there. Also heard of an officer who responded to the question of why he wrote reports: “To let my sergeant know I’m working.” Those might give defense attorney Irvin pause.

  36. - PublicServant - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 1:35 pm:

=== They are emboldened because they simply don’t care for another human’s life. It’s that simple. Zero respect in their lives. ===

Pritzker wants you to talk about that.

  37. - Alice Childress - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 1:53 pm:

Public Servant, got me. JB called me this morning and asked for me to adjust the narrative.

  38. - Just a guy - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 4:35 pm:

It’s not hard to figure out. You have 150,000+ gang members in Chicago. What is hard to figure out is what’s always been hard to figure out - how to address the fact that there are 150,000+ gang members in Chicago. And some (not all, and not most, but definitely some) of these folks are bad actors that are not going to care who the Governor is. Who the District Attorney is. Who the Mayor is. Who the President is. They care about three things - money, power and perceived respect. I’ve done enough volunteer work with groups like CeaseFire and talked with enough men (and women) who have told me just that to believe it’s not random lip service. Unfortunately for us as the electorate, lip service is exactly what we get from a lot of our elected officials when it comes to figuring out how to address both gun violence and the root causes of it.

  39. - Shanna - Monday, Jun 6, 22 @ 10:19 pm:

So sad for the cops but nothing for the unarmed 13 y/o.

Also do black cops support him all I see are whites and white police.
