Rate the Illinois Democratic County Chairs’ Association state fair video

* Hannah Meisel

And elsewhere during Wednesday’s brunch, a three-minute video played a literal hit, underlying Billie Eilish’s breakout 2019 song “Bad Guy” underneath a highlight — or lowlight — reel of Rauner’s time in office.

The video featured a National Review article from 2017 wherein the conservative magazine named him the “worst Republican governor in America” and said “This much is clear: Illinois hardly could do worse.” At that point, the video pans to black and white photos of Bailey overlaid with text that reads, “Meet Darren Bailey. He’s worse,” synching with the part of the chorus in Eilish’s song when she sings, “I’m the bad guy…duh.”

Bailey, his wife Cindy, and his running mate, Stephanie Trussell, have all come under fire this month for recently unearthed social media posts, including homophobic, racist and Islamophobic rhetoric from Cindy Bailey and Trussell. The Pritzker campaign quickly turned a 2017 Facebook Live video from Bailey into an ad featuring the then-legislative candidate’s comparison of abortion to the Holocaust.

The video featured that footage, plus a Facebook Live gaffe from earlier this summer when Bailey said “let’s move on and celebrate freedom” in the hour after a mass shooting at the Highland Park Fourth of July parade, when details about the shooting and its victims were scarce.

    C. They can do better, they’re trying too hard, they should have done more editing on ‘Bad Guy’ because they used a verse that doesn’t fit/is inappropriate, and the part where Bailey’s voice is slowed down for effect is the height of just-too-muchery.

    That said…there is a really good :60 ad in there. They just have to find it.

    There’s a guy on twitter who used to work for Hillary and who is forever retweeting ‘amazing’ ads that are, like, 2:30 long. No one’s watching those man! Give me the tight :30 or :60 and THEN I will be impressed.

    (Yes, I know this isn’t an ad, and that its purpose was to fire up/entertain insiders).

    Great choice of background music (I’m sure $ was not an issue to pay) I think it has a good narrative in a well done and easy-to-understand sequence. It explains the consequences of former Gov. Rauner’s policies placing Bailey as a worse option. Finalizing with the voice of (President Obama election victory’s speech) with hopeful Pritzker commitment to Illinois

  3. - Baloneymous - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 9:21 am:

    A-. It offers a clear and concise distinction between the two candidates and the two main political parties. And it’s hopeful and positive. I’m tired of one party offering nothing but doom and gloom and hateful and divisive rhetoric. This is nice.

  4. - Langhorne - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 9:25 am:

    Powerful. Nice juxtaposition of rauner morphing into bailey.
    Specific accomplishments under JB, giving reasons to vote FOR him.

    A

    It’s a solid B

    Why?

    It’s meant to be consumed by the “converted”, and to inspire and gin up engaged Dems

    An important reminder what Illinois as a state faces…. Bailey fills his campaign and thoughts with hate and divisive thoughts… and before Bailey… as Crain’s put it, by nearly every measure, Illinois was worse with Bruce Rauner.

    It’s important. The choices are clear. It’s a good video.

    Solid B

  6. - Lurker - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 9:42 am:

    Good music. Simple story. Rauner was the worse gov in America. Bailey would be much worse.

  7. - Dotnonymous - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 9:47 am:

    Rauner continues to appear infamously…forever.

  8. - Lucky Pierre - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 9:50 am:

    A+

    You can watch the video and actually be hoodwinked into believing the 37th most popular Governor in America who 51% of Illinois residents approve of is a strong candidate for the White House and the 43% who don’t approve of him are cartoon villains.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 10:07 am:

    === 37th most popular Governor in America===

    Good thing Pritzker is running against Bailey and not the 36 other governors. I mean, you keep thinking it’s a thing. They ain’t running against each other in a 64-team NCAA basketball bracket… so…

    ===who 51% of Illinois residents approve of===

    Bruce Rauner would’ve loved 51% approving of him.

    Plus, friend, Pritzker is above water, even back in… (checks link) April…

    I know your support of Darren Bailey for governor makes you blind to things, but…

  10. - South side cubs fan - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 10:29 am:

    I think Rauner might have a better chance of winning in November than Bailey has.

  11. - Highland IL - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 10:34 am:

    During Bailey’s morning FB live preaching he actually said he wants to take Illinois back the 1940′ and 1950’s when times were more “innocent”.

  12. - Back to the Future - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 10:41 am:

    Grade- -A
    It was prepared for a certain audience and hit all the major themes well. Liked the music.

  13. - City Zen - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 11:21 am:

    B- as it didn’t include footage of my family driving to the Wisconsin State Fair.

  14. - Scott Cross for President - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 11:25 am:

    A. Know your audience and deliver for them. Nailed it.

  15. - Rudy’s teeth - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 11:34 am:

    Video B.
    So Candidate Bailey wants to return Illinois to the 1940s and 1950s. Polio threatened the nation until vaccine was developed. Thank you Dr. Jonas Salk.
    School segregation existed in many parts of the country. Industries polluted the air, water, and soil with toxins.

    Candidate Bailey proves every day that he is not competent nor qualified for the governor’s office.

  16. - New Day - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 11:51 am:

    Oh, LP, you’re so cute. If you want to make a slam, the least you could do is use the most recent Morning Consult quarterly poll which is meaningfully better. Oh, and I suspect if you took a poll today, your candidate Darren Bailey is probably somewhere in the -25 approval category.

  17. - JS Mill - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 11:57 am:

    =Illinois to the 1940s and 1950s.=

    So the WWII era (that is when the holocaust was in full swing) and the Korean War era. He is a genius.

    The ad is a B+. The ending is a solid reason to keep JB.

  18. - Boone's is Back - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 1:10 pm:

    C+ it’s too long and some of the hits lack context, particularly the Highland Park scene. Otherwise it gets the point across that he would be even worse than rauner.

  19. - Stix Hix - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 1:34 pm:

    –1940′s and 1950’s when times were more “innocent–

    My uncles are gone now, but the stories they told would suggest nothing has changed. Nothing.

  20. - Lucky Pierre - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 1:59 pm:

    New Day

    According to your updated poll JB is now at 51-44

    unfavorables 1 point higher than last poll

    How is that meaningfully better?

  21. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 2:44 pm:

    ===According to your updated poll JB is now at 51-44

    unfavorables 1 point higher than last poll===

    You then ask…

    ===How is that meaningfully better?===

    It’s better than being underwater…

  22. - Give Us Barabbas - Thursday, Aug 18, 22 @ 2:49 pm:

    B. I found a lot of the graphics overlays hard to read and low-contrast, and the shade of blue used to colorize really overly obscured the imagery behind it. Content was on point.
