Second question of the day

Tuesday, Sep 13, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller

* For some reason, I haven’t yet posted this story

The leading candidates for Illinois Governor will meet face to face for the first time, in a set of exclusive prime-time debates hosted by Nexstar Media Inc. next month.

Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Republican nominee, State Sen. Darren Bailey, have both agreed to participate in two, one-hour debates covering current issues central to voters both regionally and statewide.

The first will now take place on October 6, at Braden Auditorium on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal.

The second debate will be held on October 18 at WGN-TV studios in Chicago.

Both events will take place at 7p.m., airing live on Nexstar television stations serving Illinois and reaching voters in nearly every corner of the state. The debates will also be streamed online, including on WGNTV.com.

* Nexstar stations

    Chicago: WGN
    Rockford: WQRF, WTVO
    Peoria/Bloomington: WMBD/WYZZ
    Champaign / Springfield: WCIA, WCIX
    Davenport/Rock Island/Moline: WHBF, KGCW, KLJB
    St. Louis: KPLR, KTVI

The also have stations in Evansville and Terre Haute.

* The Question: What questions would you like to see asked at these debates? Explain.

” Do you personally believe Joe Biden won the presidential election fair and square?”

    Can’t wait…tingles.

  2. - Res Melius - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 1:45 pm:

Balancing the budget will likely be more difficult the next few years in Illinois. What would be your primary focus areas to improve efficiency? What would be your first action step?

  3. - Anyone Remember - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 1:55 pm:

“Do you agree with the allegations of voter fraud in McLean and Tazewell counties, particularly in view of both county clerks disputing those allegations?”

  4. - Techie - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 1:56 pm:

A persistent issue for Illinois voters is the high level of property taxes residents face. What specific policies will you propose and pursue to address this issue?

Pritzker will likely say that we need to fund education more at the state level, thereby alleviating the need for dollars to come from the local level.

I don’t know how Bailey would respond, but would be interested to hear.

  5. - Da big bad wolf - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 1:57 pm:

What are your plans to fix Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center in southern Illinois?

What can Illinois do to help foster children who age out make the transition to independent living?

  6. - Da big bad wolf - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 1:59 pm:

What can Illinois do about children in the care of DCFS who have no place to go? Are there plans to hire more people? Build more orphanages?

  7. - New Day - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 2:01 pm:

Darren Bailey, you seem to be waffling on abortion because your previous position is incredibly unpopular with Illinois voters. Are you renouncing your previously stated position and if so, which of your positions should voters believe is the real you?

  8. - twowaystreet - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 2:04 pm:

For Bailey, he needs to be asked about his ineffective legislative career and how anyone can expect for him to get anything done working with a Democratic-controlled legislature. If his plan it just to be a blockade then they should push him to own up to that so voters know that his plan is to make government ineffective.

On crime, they should ask him about the growing national trend, highlighting the rise in crime in red states and rural areas. He’s went far too long using as a purely political tool to bash political opponents, so let’s hear what policies he wants to put in place because Republicans haven’t figured out how to tackle rising crime anywhere else.

For Pritzker, ask him about Fair Maps. He campaigned for the issue and walked it back after being elected. He didn’t even attempt to deliver that to voters. He should own up to it and let voters know he prioritized politics.

  9. - OneMan - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 2:09 pm:

== I’ll have to look at that. I haven’t looked at that. I want to remind people here in Illinois that women are well protected and cared for and nothing is going to change here in Illinois regarding abortions as Gov. Pritzker tries to throw me in that category. ==

Senator Bailey, do you consider the laws concerning the availability of abortions ‘protections’ for women in Illinois?

When you say “nothing is going to change here in Illinois regarding abortions” does that mean you will take no executive actions related to abortion? Would you veto any bill that restricted abortion in Illinois?

  10. - Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 2:14 pm:

What specific actions will you seek to take as Governor to reduce gun violence?

  11. - vern - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 2:15 pm:

I honestly don’t care. The debate structure has mostly passed its usefulness as a forum for eliciting new responses from politicians. I have many questions that I’d like to ask both of them, but I wouldn’t get any answers with a 90-second clock.

I’d rather see them each sit for long-form interviews where their opponent and the clock there to bail them out.

  12. - vern - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 2:16 pm:

*aren’t there, sorry for the typo

  13. - Benjamin - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 2:47 pm:

For Pritzker: Where has your administration failed, and why?

For Bailey: What has your opponent done that has worked out well for the state?

  14. - Wards of the State - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 2:47 pm:

Will you fire Marc Smith at DCFS? If yes, when? If no, why not?

  15. - MisterJayEm - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 2:58 pm:

“What questions would you like to see asked at these debates?”

    1) Was Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. duly elected as the the 46th and current president of the United States?

    2) Will you accept as final the results of the November 2022 election as determined by county election officials and overseen by the Illinois State Board of Elections?

    – MrJM

  16. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 3:06 pm:

I defer my answer to what - MisterJayEm - already requested

If one can’t answer these two correctly, the other questions won’t matter much, and I’d hope both can answer them… correctly.

  17. - Bruce( no not him) - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 3:12 pm:

If you lose, will you accept it gracefully?
Or will you insist the election was rigged?

  18. - Blake - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 3:43 pm:

Tell us how your policies will impact wherever Pritzker fared worst in 2018 (to Pritzker) or whichever municipality in Cook Pritzker fared best in 2018 (to Bailey)?

  19. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 3:47 pm:

Politicians have long ago perfected the art of not answering the questions they are asked, preferring instead to answer the questions they wanted to be asked, but weren’t.

I wouldn’t expect anything different time time around.

  20. - Blake - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 3:50 pm:

Or how they’ll impact Peoria. Echelon Insights made a study in 2018 comparing each county/independent city to the national average. Peoria County, IL came out most like national average in Illinois, 5th most nationwide.

  21. - Earnest - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 3:59 pm:

Do you believe people who are accused of a crime and deemed dangerous to their communities should be released into that community while awaiting trial so long as they put up enough money?

  22. - Oxfordian - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 4:09 pm:

What actions will you take as Governor to ensure that women from not only our State across the nation can receive safe reproductive healthcare throughout the state of Illinois? Will you take steps to ensure that women seeking reproductive health care in Illinois are protected from prosecution in their home states?

  23. - Streator Curmudgeon - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 4:35 pm:

    For Bailey:

As a born-again Christian, do you believe it is honest for a candidate to be evasive when answering a question?

  24. - Someone you Should Know - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 4:59 pm:

Have you Ever been in a Turkish Prison? Do you like Gladiator movies :)

  25. - dr. reason a. goodwin - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 5:35 pm:

I guess it doesn’t matter since the Deep South seems to be shut out of the coverage map.

  26. - Joshua P. - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 7:23 pm:

During the next four years, should the State Budget require more revenue, how would you propose raising $2 billion?

  27. - Lurker - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 10:03 pm:

Since Illinois should spend less, which department would receive the deepest cuts? If you do not name a department, how much are you planning to raise taxes?

  28. - AFSCME Steward - Tuesday, Sep 13, 22 @ 10:10 pm:

What steps will you take to impede the trafficking of illegal guns into Chicago from Indiana?

  29. - Mama - Wednesday, Sep 14, 22 @ 12:04 am:

How will you protect state pensions and continue paying down the pension debit?

  30. - JoanP - Wednesday, Sep 14, 22 @ 3:45 am:

To Bailey: In light of your stated objections to government “handouts”, will you be returning the farm subsidies you have received from the government?
