Morning campaign stuff

Wednesday, Oct 19, 2022 - Posted by Isabel Miller

* A quick roundup to start your day…

    * Sun-Times/WBEZ Poll: Voters all over the field on Bears’ Arlington play — but almost half would sack any taxpayer dollar request: The survey underscores the difficulty the team faces in lining up support for its sweeping proposal to transform the shuttered Arlington International Racecourse into a stadium campus accompanied by a scores of new restaurants, businesses and residential buildings. “Why should the taxpayers fund anything?,” one poll respondent asked.

    * Where 28th state Senate candidates stand on abortion: Murphy, who has represented the district since 2015, said the government “has no business” making decisions about reproduction or other health care issues for women. “We have the right to make our own decisions on our health care,” she said. “Everyone else makes their own decisions on their health care. Why wouldn’t women, throughout the country and particularly in Illinois, have the right to do it?”

    * In their own words: Meet the candidates running for Illinois’s 36th Senate District:
    For the first time since 2014, State Senator Neil Anderson (R) will not be on the ballot for Illinois’s 36th district. After the state’s once-per-decade redistricting process, Anderson was drawn out of the 36th. He now resides in and is running to represent the new 47th district.

    * What’s the Difference Between Illinois’ Treasurer and Comptroller?: While the offices of attorney general and secretary of state seem simple enough, Illinois is one of only a handful of states that has both a treasurer and a comptroller, with both offices controlling elements of the state’s finances.

    * Daily Herald Endorsement: Costa Howard for House Dist. 42: Many Democrats danced around questions related to former House Speaker Michael Madigan, the once all-powerful head of the party in Illinois. Costa Howard worked for his ouster. In fact, she was one of the 19 House Democrats who opposed his leadership and one of the first to call for him to go. […] It is a shame that in endorsing Costa Howard we cannot therefore endorse Hood. She is a responsible Republican running to add political balance to a state now dominated by one party and normally we would herald that.

* More to come!

    Wouldn’t it be ironic if St. Loo lured the Bears using Kroenke and the NFLs $750 million.

  2. - GE - Wednesday, Oct 19, 22 @ 10:26 am:

    Rep Costa Howard is a nice woman who did, in fact, work to dethrone Madigan (after accepting his campaign donations). That work is to be commended.

    However, where was she in working to get our kids back into schools in Glen Ellyn, Carol Stream and Lombard? Would have loved her to show some passion there. Instead, she sat back and let her friends in the school board fake educate our kids for 10 months remotely.

    I don’t know Hood, but given above, the Daily Herald endorsement now reads like an endorsement of Hood.

    ==Wouldn’t it be ironic if St. Loo lured the Bears using Kroenke and the NFLs $750 million.==

    How about a compromise. The St. Louis people lure the Bears with the $750M, but throw a bone at Illinois by promising to return the team to Decatur. Making the team nearly equidistant to STL and Chicago (but a little closer to STL).

    I wonder how long it will take before the Indianapolis Colts exploit the Bears stadium drama by pulling a Northwestern and introducing their new slogan, “Chicago’s AFC Team.”

    ===The St. Louis people lure===

    Again, no matter what name you are choosing this week to comment…

    The Bears are a franchise in the largest media market that’s not shared. The third largest media market.

    The Bears are worth $6+ billion dollars, they own property in that media market, no need to leverage anything or threaten to leave this lucrative area

    The Brars can go 0-17 or 17-0, they will be profitable as they are profitable on March 1st every year with the doling out of television monies.

    The real shame of ALL this is that the city and the Bears should understand the Bears staying in the city limits should’ve been a strong want by all, and the Bears shoulda worked a deal, even an ownership position where the “stadium dollars”, every penny profit dollars coulda been realized in the Chicago city limits.

  6. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 19, 22 @ 12:53 pm:

    ===before the Indianapolis Colts===

    Again, the NFL would need to approve and there’s no way an original franchise in the largest unshared media market is going to lose a vote with 30 other franchises where the Bears footprint is marginalized in a 21st century existence.

    Before you get all goofy again, Jacksonville has first rights (allegedly) to London, so coming to Chicago when London sits out there as a real relocation is sillier than the last two thoughts combined

  7. - thisjustinagain - Wednesday, Oct 19, 22 @ 1:07 pm:

    Bears will get a consortium together and do the deal even without tax breaks; they want out of Soldier Field badly, otherwise they wouldn’t have bought the land and started all the discussions. Sadly whether the team wins or loses bears little on the math in the end.
    And to OW: Wouldn’t the NFL just be better off setting up an “NFL European League” with European players instead of letting a U.S. team move to Europe?

  8. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 19, 22 @ 1:21 pm:

    ===better off setting up an “NFL European League”===

    The NFL did have “NFL Europe”, a developmental league. It was “fine”

    The current USFL kinda-sorta fills that void today, in partnership with the sports arms of Fox/NBC

    Why dilute the Euro market again? The NFL did that already.

    An example is the Packers are playing in Germany this season. Likely not an accident on so many levels, but it gives a broader Europe the top teams to see and pay, including the media rights which is where the money is.

    Looking at the mirror of the Premier League media in the states, when those Premier League teams “barnstorm” the Americas, the monies to see a top flight product is a plus for all, including the league and the franchises themselves.

    Look up “NFL Europe”, good stuff and history there.

    My favorite team was the Barcelona Dragons

    Apologies, it’s Tampa Bay - Seattle in Germany, it was announced around the Packers heading to London

    Sincere apologies.

    our house got a large postcard mailer from a candidate for Cook County Clerk, Joseph Schreiner. it is wildly anti vax and mask…and nothing more…. and includes the title of one section “No More Wars on Cook County.” and by that he means all the COVOD precautions. it is farther out there than anything I’ve ever seen from a candidate mailer. Libertarians with money. Scary.

    His latest filing says he has $200 in the bank. https://www.elections.il.gov/CampaignDisclosure/CDPDFViewer.aspx?FiledDocID=d3VxELCi3E8wzfVn%2byFd3w%3d%3d&DocType=y4%2bQAKnRNtkuIDOSztTByg%3d%3d&T=638017891439988889

    Can you email me the mailer, please? Thanks.

  12. - Soccermom - Wednesday, Oct 19, 22 @ 3:32 pm:

    GE — a couple things

    First of all, Costa Howard did not accept “Madigan’s money.” Although he may have thought of it that was, it was money from donors to the state Democratic party.

    And as far as the DH endorsing Hood, here’s what they said about Costa Howard:

    “Costa Howard is an extraordinary public servant whose performance during four years in office displays the courage of her convictions.

    Many legislators said they support redistricting reform. Costa Howard actually fought for it — relentlessly, even when most of her colleagues unfortunately caved.

    Many Democrats danced around questions related to former House Speaker Michael Madigan, the once all-powerful head of the party in Illinois. Costa Howard worked for his ouster. In fact, she was one of the 19 House Democrats who opposed his leadership and one of the first to call for him to go.

    The General Assembly’s procedures still have problems — the lightning middle-of-the-night consideration of the SAFE-T Act certainly is an example of that — but it is better than it used to be and Costa Howard has played an important role in that improvement.

    An attorney and former school board member in Glen Ellyn Elementary District 41, she is a strong, assertive and independent legislator who works proactively to protect abortion rights and for common sense gun control including a ban on the sale of assault weapons.”

    Not sure how you can read that as an endorsement of her opponent, but you be you.
