Good morning today is my birthday, all I want (outside of a reasonable progressive income tax in the state of Illinois) is for the north central service metra line to Antioch through O’hare to have at least mildly frequent service on the weekend!
Here in the 217, a lot of people are looking forward to the annual City Basketball Tourney which started Wens and runs through Saturday.
This is pretty much the highlight of winter around here and other than the inauguration, is pretty much the largest public gatherings of the post Holiday season.
Saturday night is like a four school class reunion as alums, parents and fans turn out. If you have never been go check it out Much more than hoops, it’s a celebration of HS kids doing the right things and features, Poms, Special Cheer Routines, Drumlines, School Bands and hoops naturally.
And watching the Springfield High/SHG student sections going at in a battle for the Spirit Award is worth the price of admission alone.
Western Illinois men’s basketball will be featured on ESPN+ Saturday afternoon - a rarity. If you get a chance, check them out. The Leathernecks are playing well this year (13-8), and actually make the ESPN “Best Think I Saw” this week, when our shooting guard scored 46 points.
@Give Me a Break: Yep, I was there last night to watch SHS play SHG pretty tough for at least one half. There’s nothing like the City tournament. Great basketball, great cooperation among the cheer squads, great competition for the spirit award (I’ll give SHS the nod last night, but I’m biased), and great performances by the poms squads. I’ll be there tonight and Saturday.

Amalia, I remember Gary Peters used to pinch-hit on that team. Doesn’t happen often that a pitcher pinch hits.
My agency often gets inquiries about things that are outside of our jurisdiction, just because the general public doesn’t understand the divisions between state agencies, or division of responsibilities between state, county, and local governments.
I’m spending most of my morning fantasizing about an Illinois with far fewer political subdivisions, and far less confusing arrays of agency responsibilities, and doing my best not to weep for what will never come to pass.

Gary Peters has died, great pitcher, last Sox pitcher to hit a grand slam and member of the great 1967 team, heartbreak that was worse than Cubs 1969. Great team photo in this obituary. https://chicago.suntimes.com/white-sox/2023/1/26/23572995/gary-peters-two-time-white-sox-all-star-dies-at-85

I remember seeing Gary Peters ht a long, right field home run at Comiskey Park. Pretty sure it was pinch hit homer. Rest in Peace.

@James and Retired, good memories.
