* Live updates and results from various media outlets…

If you find anything I’ve missed, please let me know in comments. Some outlets just didn’t have anything in place as of late this afternoon.

* I’ll adjust this live tweet list as we go along, adding or subtracting as necessary. You’ll likely see a bit of off-topic content here until the polls close and votes start to come in…

  1. - Three Dimensional Checkers - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 4:41 pm:

The younger voter numbers are up so far but not by a ton. Maybe Johnson makes it interesting.

  2. - Lurker - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 4:59 pm:

Sorry to hear about Mr Garcias daughter.

  3. - Big Dipper - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 5:06 pm:

The sad thing is that Gardiner makes Levar look like a great statesman.

  4. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 5:14 pm:

===Starring Paul Vallas, Pat Levar, Gene Schulter, and many other Vrdolyak/Daley dinosaurs===

The Daley folks from the 90s coming out of the woodwork for Vallas told so much to a real retracting, even rolling past Rahm.

If you thought it was about “crime” or “safety” you never paid attention or learned about M’s days on the 5th floor and now … “cui bono“

Dominic and Ronnie know the score

  5. - low level - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 5:16 pm:

    Vallas by +5.

  6. - Wensicia - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 6:08 pm:

Big night for carry-out pizza restaurants.

  7. - Stuck in Celliniland - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 6:11 pm:

My guesses for a few Springfield races (even though I live outside the city):

-Langfelder hangs on by about 3+
-Lisa Badger upsets both Feger and McCarty for Treasurer
-Big margins of victory for Williams in Ward 3, Purchase in Ward 5, and Brad Carlson in Ward 7
-Larry Rockford wins Ward 4, Notariano bests Haaker in Ward 6
-Blissett is the only Dist. 186 board member to lose, goes down in Dist. 186 subdistrict 3 (endorsed by neither party), Jennifer Bandy wins a close race
-Proposal by Springfield to annex the unincorporated areas of Springfield and Woodside townships surrounded by the City passes in the city, but goes down in flames particularly in Leland Grove, Southern View, etc.
-The victory celebrations are barely over tomorrow night before more stuff hits the fan tomorrow night in City Council over the Wyndham

  8. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 6:15 pm:

As results start to pour in tonight, here’s something that has been rattling around my head.

I waited until tonight for this hot take.

John Kass use to write scathing screed about RMD and all his 5th Floor types and cronies.

    “Today”, Kass supports Paul Vallas.

    Let that fester.

  9. - jackmac - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 6:33 pm:

    ===Gene Schulter===

Wow. I haven’t heard that name in many years. He was the Dem that finally knocked out Ald. John Hoellen (a lonely Republican) from the 47th Ward City Council seat and Schulter was part of Ed Kelly’s Fightin’ 47th Democratic Ward organization. All three names were prominent during my time as a local high school student in the 1970s and many classmates landed jobs with the Chicago Park District during that era as Kelly ran the city parks.

  10. - The Truth - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 7:36 pm:

I think Johnson pulled it off. Wow.

  11. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 7:40 pm:

    Pack a lunch.

    For two weeks too

  12. - Big Dipper - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 7:42 pm:

VBM is going to trend for Johnson so not looking good for “Pablo.”

  13. - ZC - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 7:46 pm:

    Polling is hard …

  14. - Steve - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 7:49 pm:

With 87% of the voted counted: it’s 50-50. I wouldn’t want to make any predictions here.

  15. - Big Dipper - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 7:50 pm:

Looks like low level was way off with that prediction.

  16. - Amalia - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 7:53 pm:

Are the regular Dems freaking out right now?

  17. - Save Ferris - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 7:53 pm:

Jesse White had a very bad farewell tour.

  18. - Lincoln Lad - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 7:55 pm:

    -OW
I think the Kass question you ask is clear. It’s not gray at all…

  19. - The Truth - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 7:55 pm:

VBMs will absolutely break for Johnson.

  20. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 7:58 pm:

    - Lincoln Lad -

    You get it.

Yikes, this is gonna be long two weeks

  21. - Big Dipper - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:00 pm:

The wall in 41 and 19 wasn’t high enough.

  22. - Nick - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:02 pm:

    Can I just say.

Kudos to the Board of Elections. They’ve counted almost all the votes within an hour of polls closing.

  23. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:03 pm:

===this is gonna be long two weeks ===

Maybe. Maybe not. The campaigns likely have a good handle on their mail-in votes.

  24. - Lincoln Lad - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:04 pm:

    -Amalia
I think I’m a regular Dem… who’s very anti-Vallas. Some old school Dems lost their mind but they are likely irregular. Lol

  25. - ArchPundit - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:05 pm:

===Kudos to the Board of Elections. They’ve counted almost all the votes within an hour of polls closing.

Here, here. In a city like Chicago that’s tough.

  26. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:06 pm:

===Maybe. Maybe not. The campaigns likely have a good handle on their mail-in votes.===

They should. That’s the saving grace to the long wait…

  27. - Steve - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:07 pm:

I can’t say many people 6 months ago predicted this sort of outcome with these 2 candidates. But, here we are.

  28. - ChicagoVinny - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:07 pm:

Obviously I was wrong the other day and Johnson campaign knew what it was doing.

  29. - Nick - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:08 pm:

This Lightfoot quote is even more hilarious in hindsight.

“They’ve [The CTU] endorsed Brandon Johnson. God bless. Brandon Johnson isn’t going to be the mayor of this city.”

  30. - For the lulz - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:29 pm:

Sounds like some commenters here need to get out in the field!

  31. - Early voter - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:29 pm:

Mayor Johnson needs to find primary challengers for Casten, Kelly, and Quigley. The only three members of the congressional delegation with parts of Chicago in their district to not endorse the new mayor.

  32. - low level - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:40 pm:

==Looks like low level was way off with that prediction.==

I was WAYY off. No queetion. Congrats to Brandon Johnson.

  33. - Big Dipper - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:44 pm:

Paul, now you can admit you live in Palos.

  34. - Roadrager - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:45 pm:

I figured for sure Vallas would scare the older voters onto his side, especially with all the endorsements from the senior circuit. Johnson never seemed to have a cohesive campaign and the knocks on Vallas never really got mainstream traction. How badly did Paul have to mess up to lose under those conditions?

  35. - TJ - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:49 pm:

In Normal, it looks like the entire GOP Nord slate is going down.

    Niiiiiiiiiiiiiice

  36. - Proud Papa Bear - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:49 pm:

I’m watching WGN’s coverage and I’m loving the guest from the Triibe. She’s sharp and disputing all the tired conventional wisdom. She really seems to have her hand on the pulse of what’s actually happening.

  37. - Twitter cat lady - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:49 pm:

Today I learned that my county clerk literally hires three strong young men to unload ballot suitcases for the election judges because 98% of them are that old.

  38. - Gravitas - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:54 pm:

    @Oswego Willy:

To be fair, Kass has supported Vallas for years dating back to the 2002 gubernatorial primary race in which Blagojevich edged Vallas in Southern Illinois.

  39. - Nick - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 8:57 pm:

Johnson now up ~13K votes with 536K counted.

I feel pretty comfortable now saying that’s it for Vallas.

  40. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:01 pm:

For what it’s worth, Wasserman has seen enough and called the race for Johnson, whose lead has been growing.

  41. - Trap - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:02 pm:

How are all the high-powered Dems endorsing Vallas gonna spin it? Chicago is too far left to save. Goodbye, Chicago, hello San Francisco.

  42. - Steve - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:02 pm:

-Mayor Johnson needs to find primary challengers for Casten, Kelly, and Quigley-

You could be right: I don’t know if they would support a CME transaction tax.

  43. - West Sub Ladi - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:12 pm:

–Mayor Johnson needs to find primary challengers for Casten, Kelly, and Quigley—

The watch those seats ultimately go Republican, especially Casten’s…too much DuPage County to run the left of them.

  44. - West Sub Ladi - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:13 pm:

I can only speak to Casten’s seat, my bad.

  45. - ZC - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:15 pm:

The Spiritual South Side and Boho-Chicago have spoken.

  46. - jimbo - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:22 pm:

==Chicago is too far left to save. Goodbye, Chicago, hello San Francisco==

    Chicago’s not gone far left.

Vallas sure seemed to be the Joe Manchin of Illinois. Says he’s a D, but hangs with Dan Proft, Amy Jacobs, AWAKE IL, wants charter schools, etc. etc.

Many people I spoke with voted Johnson with the thought that some of his ideas like head-tax wouldn’t pass the council.

  47. - Steve - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:27 pm:

    -wants charter schools, etc. etc.-

This is a good point. I wonder if charter schools and magnet schools can survive at their current levels? Especially with a fully elected school board not too far away.

  48. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:31 pm:

    Shocking, Johnson…

Not shocking, Johnson… considering how the post mortem will be with “who” and “where”… and pluralities

  49. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:38 pm:

    So…

Instead of depressing minority voters, there was a depressing of senior voters?

The three prongs of Vallas “forgot” seniors this time around?

  50. - Big Dipper - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:41 pm:

AP called it for Vallas and rumors Paul will concede soon.

  51. - Big Dipper - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:41 pm:

Called it for Johnson my bad.

  53. - Proud Papa Bear - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:43 pm:

Not sure if it’s official or not but the Awake candidate in District 155 (Crystal Lake) went down, as did their two candidates in Cary Elementary.

  54. - Lincoln Lad - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:43 pm:

I will go to bed happy about this one… and the Wisconsin Supreme Court race. Two big ones for sure.

  55. - The Truth - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:44 pm:

The Awake candidates went down everywhere.

    The good guys won.

  56. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:49 pm:

If you read this incorrectly then you aren’t understanding my words.

Chicago Democrats need to understand who they want to be going forward, and not reach back to find what they think could be.

If voters made that statement with Johnson, then what is next is up to the future seekers, not the history buffs.

  57. - Amalia - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:52 pm:

oh no, Kass is not moving back to Chicago.

  58. - Shibboleth - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:52 pm:

=The Awake candidates went down everywhere.

    The good guys won.=

And Carbondale elected a trans woman to our city council. Thank you Illinois for rejecting anti-trans rhetoric.

  59. - low level - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:53 pm:

==This Lightfoot quote is even more hilarious in hindsight.

“They’ve [The CTU] endorsed Brandon Johnson. God bless. Brandon Johnson isn’t going to be the mayor of this city.”==

Man, right?? I’d forgotten completely about that. Just another clueless moment for MLL who may set a record by going from 70% to 17% in four years.

  60. - Big Dipper - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 9:58 pm:

Well Rahm said Lori wouldn’t win last time so stupid comments abound in politics.

  61. - Anyone Remember - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 10:04 pm:

Going to change “useful idiot” to “useful tool” … .

Paul Vallas was the “useful tool” of IPI, Tillman, Proft, Uihlein, Griffin, Rauner, & the Tribune Editorial Board to breach the Illinois Constitution pension clause.

He was also the “useful tool” to use get around ADA / IEPs as it relates to vouchers and non-public schools.

Maybe Greg Abbott will hire him to run the Houston School District?

  62. - A drop in - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 10:09 pm:

-Mayor Johnson needs to find primary challengers for Casten, Kelly, and Quigley—

Wrong party. Expect to see all 3 at the unity breakfast.

  63. - Roadrager - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 10:16 pm:

    ==So…

Instead of depressing minority voters, there was a depressing of senior voters?==

Fully anecdotal here, but there was a tweet about interviewing older voters in Little Village, and several of them would not vote for Vallas because they remembered what he did to their community’s school back when.

So much of Vallas’ campaign was dependent on people not actually remembering who he was while he was in charge of something here, while also chasing money and endorsements with that big nostalgia kick. Perhaps voters have better memories than he (or I) gave them credit for.

  64. - Candy Dogood - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 10:16 pm:

A lot of folks threw their weight around a figure with a lot of troubling behaviors, statements, and residencies, and now have nothing to show for it other than reduced significance among the body politic they serve.

Legacies slip to irrelevance, like tears in rain.

  65. - Rogo - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 10:20 pm:

===Legacies slip to irrelevance, like tears in rain.===

Congratulations to the Mayor-Elect, Brandon Johnson. I hope he can get stuff done.

  66. - Three Dimensional Checkers - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 10:23 pm:

Congrats to Mayor Elect Johnson. Him and his team ran a very good campaign, and I think the biggest thing they did well was increasing young voter turnout even though overall it is very low. Vallas was classy in his concession speech and not really a MAGA Republican.

So much of the actual government business side is managing the things that you do not expect or plan for during a campaign. The 5th Floor is never a cushy job for anyone ever. Everyone should do our best to help him.

  67. - The Truth - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 10:25 pm:

I was not expecting a well-made Blade Runner analogy on this website tonight but here we are

  68. - Suburban Mom - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 10:30 pm:

Brandon Johnson is literally making me cry with this speech. This is the Chicago that my father and grandfather and great-grandfather believed in. I hope for every single thing he dreams of.

  69. - Leap Day William - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 10:31 pm:

Of the three Champaign Unit 4 School Boar candidates targeted by DPI as extreme, only one made it into the top 4 and therefore into a board seat, assuming the VBM ballots don’t change things much. The top three are have a significant enough of a lead that pretty much locks them in.

Extremism seems to be losing across the state and I am here for it.

That said, races are not being called here yet, so this could still change.

  70. - Jed Bartlett - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 10:35 pm:

The census bureau is going to need to revise their Illinois population estimates down by about 150k after these results. :-)

  71. - Anyone Remember - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 10:37 pm:

    Jed Bartlett -

    You’re channeling your father.

  72. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 10:41 pm:

===The census bureau is going to need to revise their Illinois population estimates down by about 150k after these results.===

    Meh.

The in-law uncle tells you this every time you see him, because he’s still in Illinois to say it.

  73. - TheInvisibleMan - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 11:00 pm:

It has been lost in the weeds with the massive shift rightward of the Republican party, but this outcome of Johnson winning makes me pleased that perhaps the voters are starting to realize there are significant differences within the Democratic Party as well.

  74. - Candy Dogood - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 11:03 pm:

===I was not expecting a well-made Blade Runner analogy on this website tonight but here we are===

Leonard’s Frisbee moment from community helped me realize that that’s an excellent reference for those who get it.

  75. - Amalia - Tuesday, Apr 4, 23 @ 11:09 pm:

nobody talked much about which candidate you’d like to have a beer with. I might argue with him, but I’d rather hang out with Brandon. He’s talky and salty. Interesting that today Vallas voted, went to Manny’s, and then to check out his election night set up. Meanwhile the new Mayor voted, went to Manny’s, and made 15 stops to GOTV. either Vallas knew he was toast or he ran out of places that wanted to see him. and now his arrogant … is done.

  76. - Cityguy - Wednesday, Apr 5, 23 @ 12:02 am:

Rich, I think you have asked similar questions in the past but a suggested question for tomorrow is what advice would you give the new mayor. There is a lot of collective wisdom on this blog.

  77. - Tim - Wednesday, Apr 5, 23 @ 2:01 am:

=== The Awake candidates went down everywhere. ===

…except for Naperville, where their co-founder (previously on the park board) won himself a seat on the City Council.

I know you were referring to their endorsed school board candidates, but I felt this was worth mentioning anyway.

  78. - Old IL Dude - Wednesday, Apr 5, 23 @ 5:50 am:

Seriously contemplating moving out of Chicago but will be trying to outlast for the next 4 years (on top of the last 4 years with MLL). This summer will be a bloodbath in the city. We got what we deserved in this city.

  79. - lake county democrat - Wednesday, Apr 5, 23 @ 6:12 am:

Young voters turned out. Vallas MAGA flirting turned off a lot of would be voters. Vallas base gambled they could do better than Lightfoot in a city that has been steadily moving left and wound up with someone much more aligned against their interests. The DSA-ish left made a similar gamble, and won.

  80. - Ashland Adam - Wednesday, Apr 5, 23 @ 7:09 am:

Surprised, not surprised by the fears - move away - doom and gloom.

If you’ve done some traveling, you might notice that the quality of life in parts of the world where they invest in public health, infrastructure, public parks, libraries, housing and education, and a social safety net, are quite nice for the residents in those places. That’s what Brandon Johnson refers to, advocates for. Yes, these have to be paid for. And we all benefit in the long run, by living in a safer, more livable city.

Illinois - austerity budgeting for decades, one of the smallest per capita public work forces of the 50 states, have resulted in a dysfunctional society. Inequality in the US has grown, as more and more wealth is clustered at the top.

I’d offer references to my comments above, but am tired from months of organizing and door knocking for Brandon Johnson. We knocked on hundreds of thousands of doors, spoke face to face with 10s of thousands of voters in every precinct in Chicago.

  81. - Humboldt - Wednesday, Apr 5, 23 @ 7:23 am:

Ashland - thank you for your work, and congratulations. I’m excited for our new mayor.

  82. - Stormsw7706 - Wednesday, Apr 5, 23 @ 7:24 am:

Congrats to Johnson. He has a tall task ahead of him but he seems to have an energy level that Chicago has not seen in some while. I am also gratified to see a teacher, especially a secondary school social studies teacher, taking a key role in Illinois politics. I’ve always felt r hat if you want to take the pulse of a city talks with the public school teachers. BTW kudos to Chicago Board of Elections on the vote counting. Textbook performance

  83. - Old IL Dude - Wednesday, Apr 5, 23 @ 7:25 am:

Businesses are going to leave. Schools are going to get more tax dollars and provide lowest performances in America. Crime will stay the same, maybe even worsen due to catch-and-release. Chicago is looking very scary with Johnson as mayor.

  84. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 5, 23 @ 7:33 am:

Brandon won. A majority of Chicago voters approve of his platform.

== I can’t say many people 6 months ago predicted this sort of outcome with these 2 candidates. ==

hmmm, from very far away, this was exactly what i expected. #1: there are a lot more teachers than cops in chicago. #2: teachers are most definitely better organizers than cops. it’s not even close. #3: old white dude vs young(er) black man in chicago. chicago is the city where an old black man cried when i shook his hand. yeah, this outcome was predictable, perhaps not to old white guys, though.

of course, from very far away, i might have missed something…

“McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski has big concerns about surging crime in Chicago, where the fast food giant is based, saying it is impacting the company’s restaurants and making it harder to recruit corporate talent.

Crime is “seeping into every corner of our city,” Kempczinski said during an event at the Economic Club of Chicago Wednesday.

“Everywhere I go, I’m confronted by the same question these days — what’s going on in Chicago? While it may wound our civic pride to hear it, there is a general sense out there that our city is in crisis.”

  89. - Old IL Dude - Wednesday, Apr 5, 23 @ 7:58 am:

Did you read what McDonald’s CEO had to say about crime in Chicago and how it affects businesses wanting to come to the city?

  91. - Lincoln Lad - Wednesday, Apr 5, 23 @ 8:04 am:

Disappointed to wake up and see that Naperville put AWAKE on the City Council with Josh McBroom. Very, very concerning…

  92. - Old IL Dude - Wednesday, Apr 5, 23 @ 8:05 am:

Will be interesting to see how the City Council interacts with Mayor Johnson. It’s not going to be an easy relationship, but it will definitely see if the Mayor is more like Lori Lightfoot or trends more like Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. I never thought I’d think there was a step down from MLL, but here we are.

  93. - Old IL Dude - Wednesday, Apr 5, 23 @ 8:08 am:

Boeing, Caterpillar, Citadel –. They left Chicago. McD’s CEO is sending out a warning on crime and how it impacts recruiting. Johnson wants to add a corporate head tax, and a LaSalle St tax, all of which will cause businesses to leave.

But I guess bc a trade magazine said differently, it must be true.

  94. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Apr 5, 23 @ 8:11 am:

What is pathetic are folks that say “Chicago crime is the worst” but statistically it’s not even in the Top 10

    According to Forbes?

Well, according to Forbes… Chicago isn’t even the Top 15 most dangerous.
