Saw on Twitter last night that Rauner laughed when asked about Illinois’ eight credit rating upgrades. It’s still a big joke to him. He left our state in near financial ruin and then fled to Florida when he got crushed. Please go back as soon as possible to the land of Trump and Desantis. Yikes.

Since talking Bears stadium is so much fun I’m sure the story about Waukegan making an outreach will be a topic today. This one is intriguing: the lakefront there could be spectacular but is largely undevelopped. Easier to cut tax breaks because the city isn’t getting anything now and nothing on the horizon, while Arlington Park could easily be turned into tax-generating housing and commercial property. Downtown Waukegan is an shadow of its former glory (save the Genesee Theater). The new facility could also host conventions: stunning lake views, train access to Chicago, minutes from the new casino and Great America. Waukegan is near the Bears’ Lake Forest HQ. There are 3 decent feder routes from the highways to the lakefront. Interesting!

Assistant to the regional manager Dwight Kurt and I are in The Office this morning proofreading Politico.

The only problem is the location, which is 10 miles from Packerland and far from the main ticket base which is in the NW/western suburbs, places like Naperville, Schaumburg, and Aurora.

love that idea for Waukegan. makes so much sense.

  6. - Friendly Bob Adams - Tuesday, Jun 13, 23 @ 9:45 am:

If the Bears want to move as far north as Waukegan, they might as well keep going and settle in Milwaukee.

  7. - NIU Grad - Tuesday, Jun 13, 23 @ 10:05 am:

I was listening to the radio both yesterday evening and this morning and didn’t hear one word about the Rauner portrait unveiling. The leading story both days was about Pritzker signing the anti-book ban legislation.

    One last laugh…

  8. - lake county democrat - Tuesday, Jun 13, 23 @ 10:10 am:

Donnie - agreed that is a problem, but 1) some would be recaptured by expats living in Racine/Kenosha county (and “NFL fans” in Milwaukee - just as easy if not easier to go to Waukegan as it is in Greenbay) and 2) I’m not sure far western burbs would be that bad depending on how you could get people quickly from I59 to the Tri-State. But you’re right - there are tradeoffs for any location and my argument for Waukegan kinda fits Gary as well, except I think Waukegan is a bit closer and nicer.

@Baloneymous - Because rich people don’t care about things that impact normal people. Rauner wanted to break unions in general, for the benefit of the rich. It didn’t matter what collateral damage occurred.

This is fundamentally the same calculus that occurs when corporate ownership supports regressive Republicans while still paying lip service to the LGBT community. They don’t care about who gets harmed by the worst policies pushed by the GOP so long as they get their tax breaks. They can afford to fly their mistress to a blue state to get an abortion, or live in a gated community without relying on public services. They can afford their health care and prescription drugs.

    Rauner is no different.

It’s almost 40 miles from Chicago. Might as well move them back to Decatur.

  11. - NorthSideNoMore - Tuesday, Jun 13, 23 @ 11:29 am:

What Candy said !! I agree gotta be some land between Decatur and Springpatch. Move to western burbs or stay put, which doesn’t seem to be an option at this point. But, hey far be it from the McCaskey Halas family from doing something abnormal.

  12. - J C Caroline - Tuesday, Jun 13, 23 @ 11:49 am:

Best Chicago finance another Billion to keep the bears home . The skyway and parking meter owners may feel guilty and want to give something back

  13. - NorthSideNoMore - Tuesday, Jun 13, 23 @ 12:02 pm:

Whats the Sangamo going to do with the wood pecker ? Auction it ? Im in for opening bid $100.

  14. - Dotnonymous x - Tuesday, Jun 13, 23 @ 12:05 pm:

Maybe Buffett will buy the Bears and bring them back to Decatur.

  15. - Socially DIstant watcher - Tuesday, Jun 13, 23 @ 12:57 pm:

A certain politicoly oriented newsletter this morning stated that Blago was “barred by state lawmakers from habitat portrait on the wall.”

Is that true? He was removed from office and barred from running again (for state or local office) but did they also bar him from hanging a portrait?

  16. - Lurker - Tuesday, Jun 13, 23 @ 1:52 pm:

Rich, you have mentioned dinners at the Sangamo Club a few times. Are you going to miss it?

In 60827, we had sunshine early, followed by a slow soaking rain. Nearby Dolton’s Queen Mayor Tiffany Henyard has signs up with her 3/4 length photo of course saying Dolton is building a water park off Greenwood Road at about 147th St. Cue a new lawsuit from the trustees maybe?

  19. - Give Us Barabbas - Tuesday, Jun 13, 23 @ 4:43 pm:

Was saddened to see IHSA has dropped high school debate, the sport that costs literally just the gas to travel to the competitions, because it’s not ” big enough”. Every day I pass by the sacrificial temples of the cult that worships every Friday night under outdoor lights, and I think to myself; I use the skills I learned in high school debating almost every day, how often will being able to throw and catch a ball be useful to most of those kids in ten, twenty years? It’s just another example of the trend of anti-intellectualism in our education system, muscles over questioning minds. Is it any wonder the electorate is getting dumber yearly?

  20. - Proud Papa Bear - Tuesday, Jun 13, 23 @ 6:14 pm:

    @Barabbas
That truly is sad. I coach a speech team and you’re right. It costs little, there’s no chance of injury, and the kids develop crucial critical thinking and presentation skills. My proudest moments are not when the elite students succeed, but when the shy or low skilled students blossom throughout the course of a season.
