Giannoulias to Announce Skip-the-Line Program at DMVs
Who: Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias
What: Secretary Giannoulias will announce the implementation of a Skip-the-Line program at DMVs throughout the state.
Where: 555 W. Monroe
3rd Floor – Room 300-N (Press Room)
Chicago
When: Thursday, July 27, at 11 a.m.
Why: Secretary Giannoulias’ Skip-the-Line program is designed to improve customer service and eliminate the unpredictability of wait times at DMVs. The program is scheduled to launch September 1, 2023
I asked if this means walk-in service will be eliminated…
Walk-ins will be allowed at the lower-volume facilities. This is the majority of the DMVs across the state.
As a side note, I really don’t like that it’s now common practice to call drivers’ service facilities “DMVs.” There is no Department of Motor Vehicles in Illinois.

The fact that Alexi keeps trying to make “fetch happen” is a soft rebranding that Alexi wants as his own where at times Alexi has promoted programs either Jesse White had running or was implementing before the election(s).
Narcissism disguised as altruism… Alexi
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 3:11 pm:
“Look, I’m doing PR for Alexi, not Secretary of State. Who really cares if it’s DMV or not, as long as they get Alexi’s name right”
- Alexi PR gurus, maybe
- Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 3:15 pm:
OW, it started under Jesse White. He basically just gave in because so many people insisted on calling it the DMV because California has a DMV and that’s what they say on the teevee.

==I really don’t like that it’s now common practice to call drivers’ service facilities “DMVs.” There is no Department of Motor Vehicles in Illinois.==
You and me both, Rich. We have a Secretary of State who handles licensing. Other states have a DMV usually as part of their Transportation Department but that is under the governor in those states, not the SOS.
Now, the reason why its under the Secretary of State and not the Gov is an interesting bit of history but we can talk about that later if people are interested.

===on the teevee===
Well, if it’s on teevee, it’s gotta be true.
That’s on me.

== I really don’t like that it’s now common practice to call drivers’ service facilities “DMVs.” ==
Me too. Every time I hear “DMV” I feel like I’m watching Johnny Carson set up a California joke during his monologue. But my top nomenclature pet peeve remains the redundant and horribly overused term “Chicagoland area.”
- Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 3:23 pm:
===redundant and horribly overused term “Chicagoland area.”===
Even better: “Greater Chicagoland area”
- DuPage Saint - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 3:25 pm:
I agree a thousand percent with Rich. It is not the DMV. Maybe I should make check out to DMV and see how it gets cashed or better yet just start a DMV checking account. A little more work than Paul Powell did but worth a shot
- George Ryan Reynolds - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 3:27 pm:
This!!!!
As a side note, I really don’t like that it’s now common practice to call drivers’ service facilities “DMVs.” There is no Department of Motor Vehicles in Illinois.
- Jerry - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 3:37 pm:
If you dislike DMV then do you call tissue a “Kleenex” or the refrigerator a “Fridge”.
Asking for a friend here in the Greater Chicagoland Area. / s

I pretend the D in DMV stands for “division”
- Milly94 - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 3:48 pm:
Rich, I don’t really get your frustration with people calling it DMV. Do you seriously think anyone tells their family that they’re going to the Secretary of State Driver Services Facility? It has and always will be easier to say DMV. This is coming from someone who has lived in Chicago and Central Illinois.
- jackmac - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:00 pm:
Calling it DMV is annoying and I’ve corrected way too many people — including family members — telling them that there IS no DMV in Illinois and the proper name of offices and centers is “Secretary of State.” I blame Hollywood and TV shows for how this usage has taken root.
- Mamacita - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:05 pm:
“DMV” is a recurring bone of contention between me and Papacita. Call it SOS if you need an acronym.
- Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:12 pm:
===Do you seriously think anyone tells their family===
Yes. I do. But I wasn’t raised as a TV addict, either.
- WK - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:16 pm:
=But I wasn’t raised as a TV addict, either.=
When that’s the most common thing that people in real life refer to it as, you don’t need to be a tv addict to pick up the popular term. It’s just like a Kleenex, or a crescent wrench, or even a cell phone. All of those are incorrect terms if applied to another brand of tissue, adjustable wrench, or any phone that doesn’t run on the long defunct analog network. But those are popular terms and they enter the language as such

“As a side note, I really don’t like that it’s now common practice to call drivers’ service facilities “DMVs.” There is no Department of Motor Vehicles in Illinois.”
Exactly. It’s ridiculous that Alexi put that on the web site since it doesn’t exist. There is no DMV in Illinois. It’s intellectually lazy. Rather than help people understand what it’s called and what the sign says on the door, he does this. So Alexi.
- New Day - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:23 pm:
“Yes. I do. But I wasn’t raised as a TV addict, either.”
I was. And nobody in my house called it the DMV.
- drew - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:23 pm:
As an Illinois ex-pat in Orlando, I was surprised to learn that here, you get your driver’s license at…the county tax collector’s office. Also, your vehicle registration always expires on your birthday.
- ArchPundit - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:23 pm:
SOS I prefer (for Illinois). Minnesota splits the baby with DVS which whatever. Missouri is honest at least in it being the Department of Revenue.
- Google Is Your Friend - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:37 pm:
Our neighbors are as follows:
Wisconsin has a DMV
https://wisconsindot.gov/pages/online-srvcs/external/dmv.aspx
Indiana has a BMV
https://www.in.gov/bmv/
Iowa has an MVD
https://iowadot.gov/mvd
Kentucky has a DLRO
https://drive.ky.gov/Drivers/Pages/default.aspx
Missouri has a Department of Revenue
https://dor.mo.gov/driver-license/
Other states, territories, and countries can be found (some with actual citations) at Wikipedia

- Pot calling kettle - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:41 pm:
They have “DMV” on the SOS web site. (Ugh)
Let’s start a movement to get people to call it the DSD (Driver Services Department) or DSF (Driver Services Facility). We ain’t California.
- Anyone Remember - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:42 pm:
DMV
There are only two states besides Illinois where driver’s licenses / vehicle registrations are handled by the Secretary of State - Maine & Michigan.
Robert Howard’s book “Mostly Good and Competent Men” (goes through Edgar) talks about how the “patronage” crowd in 1936 gave those functions to Secretary of State Edward J. Hughes (a Chicago Machine Democrat) instead of Gov. Henry Horner, a reformer. That’s why Illinois does not have a “DMV” … .
- Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:42 pm:
I’m not *that* old, and I wasn’t gonna chime in, but I’ve always called it “Drivers Services”
I’ll leave it there with no further comment.
- JS Mill - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:52 pm:
I have always called it the Secretary of State office. I am a slave to formalities I guess.
=But my top nomenclature pet peeve remains the redundant and horribly overused term “Chicagoland area.”=
Once you get 60-70miles outside of Chicago in rural Illinois, they locals refer to everything including the suburbs as “Chicago”. Drives me nuts.
- Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:52 pm:
===When that’s the most common thing that people in real life refer to it as===
Anecdote and not data, yadda-yaddah, but I have never, in my entire life, heard any of my friends, family, etc. call it the DMV. Never.
- Surge voter - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 4:56 pm:
whatever the office is called… Alexi has been doing a great job. Passing legislation and improving service….and I know this because OW is sooo concerned.

Which is more concerning, the sassy wet t-shirt Alexi, or the “teenager on the floor watching YouTube on a laptop in his socks” Alexi…
Narcissism disguised as altruism.

Meh. With ALL our other issues, not much.

Kleenex is an eponym and fridge is slang. DMV is an acronym for an entity that does not exist in Illinois.
We always said “I gotta renew my driver’s license.” It was understood where you were going. Sometimes it was “the Secretary of State,” but never the DMV.
- Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 5:21 pm:
===fridge is slang===
Short for Frigidaire, an eponym (which people like my late paternal grandmother used).
- Huh? - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 5:24 pm:
Alexi is confused about the agency for which is was elected. There is no DMV.
- Rich Miller - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 5:25 pm:
===With ALL our other issues, not much.===
Meh.
- Big Dipper - Wednesday, Jul 26, 23 @ 5:47 pm:
I have heard mostly transplants call it the DMV. They also call the expressways freeways and use the numbers rather than the names. And they refer to local prosecutors as district attorneys.

==Alexi has been doing a great job. ==
I guess. I’ll never understand his appeal. I literally held my nose to vote for him last November but indeed I stuck w the party.

=Kleenex is an eponym and fridge is slang. DMV is an acronym for an entity that does not exist in Illinois.=
An eponym means it’s named after a person. There was no Mr. Kleenex, sorry.
Kleenex and DMV are slang terms used to refer to something whether it is an actual Kleenex or a DMV.
Just like chapstick (also a brand name) or steroid (a specific type of organic compound, not necessarily a performance enhancing drug, and many PED’s aren’t steroids but are referred to as that).
