Pritzker: ‘People who live in other states who want to have children using IVF, come to Illinois’

Wednesday, Feb 28, 2024 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Gov. JB Pritzker’s chief of staff…

* The governor really leaned into it today when asked about the in vitro fertilization topic at an unrelated news conference

We always knew that when Dobbs was decided, and you read the decision by Clarence Thomas, which seemed to begin to go after other issues, beyond just reproductive rights, like gay marriage, for example, or like, you know, what now is going to be IVF that they’re outlining, that our rights are in danger. Much broader than the original decision of Dobbs. So that’s very disturbing.

IVF is protected here in the state of Illinois, and I welcome the members of the General Assembly who are looking at new ways for us to protect doctors and patients on IVF. But it is protected.

People who live in other states who want to have children using IVF, come to Illinois. We’re protecting your rights in so many ways, but specifically regarding IVF.

Smartest move of the day and will help with the entire down ticket in the election cycle. GOP just can’t get out of its own way.
Did they not see what happened with Roe?

  2. - Amalia - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 2:16 pm:

that’s a nice sentiment from him and I appreciate it. but the process is way more complicated than spend a couple days in Illinois.

  3. - New Day - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 2:16 pm:

She and JB are 100% right. The GOP ran on overturning Roe for forty years. D’s warned of the consequences and were told they are being hysterical and that these things wouldn’t happen. They made this bed and now they have to lie in it and Ds need to put them in it again and again and again. Hang it around their necks like the electoral anchor it is and will be.

And hang it around Donald “I overturned Roe when nobody else could” Trump.

  4. - Benjamin - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 2:18 pm:

@Amalia: I think Pritzker’s pitching Illinois as their new state of residence, not an overnight trip.

  5. - Give Us Barabbas - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 2:23 pm:

The party of small government, (citation needed) should be pummeled for their overreach on women’s health issues and rights. This will be a major thrust for state and national campaigns I think, and if it gets enough women riled up, could flip some seats.

  6. - TJ - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 2:33 pm:

It’s a very smart move. There are enough people that unfortunately don’t think that women’s healthcare issues are an issue for them personally, but borderline everyone has an inkling of understanding for people that want to have kids even if they have no desire to have kids.

  7. - Amalia - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 2:46 pm:

@Benjamin, that’s a good take. this is an important issue because it is a part of women’s agency, how to decide for herself.

  8. - Cosgrove - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 3:02 pm:

Good for JB and Anne. Every single Republican who has supported a so-called Human Life Amendment (or has been endorsed by organizations who hold this position) saying that life begins at at this magical moment of “conception” needs to be held responsible every single day for not only outlawing abortion, but also birth control and IVF. It’s not a shock or an unintended consequence of overturning Roe, it’s their policy as stated on their websites with language such as “The Pill Kills.” Add that Amy Coney Barrett called birth control “disgusting.” This is who they are and always have been.

  9. - Techman - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 3:11 pm:

I think you all should read the actual opinion and not the media hysteria. Yes, it was a ruling that does not make sense, but the way I read the opinion it was based on old laws that are still on the books. Much like IL, most states still have laws and statutes from previous centuries that do not make sense today.

  10. - Homebody - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 3:11 pm:

I’ve never worked on a campaign, nor been involved in political messaging, but I can’t understand why Dems nationwide have been so unable during my lifetime to just overtly express their principles as clearly as JB and his team have.

Stop acting like you are embarrassed to admit what you stand for. Listen to JB. Be like JB.

  11. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 3:13 pm:

===it was based on old laws that are still on the books===

    And your point is… what?

  12. - Updawg - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 4:48 pm:

Nothing beats the guy who says “Well ackshullay it’s not as bad as the media says”

And then two sentences later admits it’s exactly as bad as the media says but, guess what ladies, what if I told you this arcane decision was made on old laws?

His point was non existent. Just wanted to seem smarter

  13. - New Day - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 5:13 pm:

    - Techman

It’s irrelevant whether it’s based on old laws or new laws. The effect is the same. Also, the decision repeatedly referenced Dobbs. That’s the whole point. Without Dobbs, those old laws would not apply. Either way, the effect is the same.

If we become a destination state for frozen embryos, does this help us with census/reapportionment?

  15. - JS Mill - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 6:23 pm:

Under JB Pritzker Illinois has become staunchly pro-life and pro-family while, at the same time, protecting the rights of women to control their own bodies.

Boy oh boy is Illinois shaping up to be the place to be.

  16. - Jibba - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 7:11 pm:

And I thought the revitalization of Illinois would have to wait until Florida and the coasts were underwater and the had no more water. But JB is making it a go-to place to live. Proud to be blue.

  17. - What's in a name? - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 7:15 pm:

I am a huge fan of JB. I think he is right on these issues. Now the “but,” there are a lot of folks who believe human life begins at conception or if they are a bit more humble, “may” begin at conception. This is my camp. Now I don’t think I have the right to impose my beliefs on the rest of the world (or the State), I don’t think the radical right is being at all Christian. I would be Pro Choice but I would like to see more effort made to encourage that choice to be life. For every dollar we spend supporting abortion, could we spend a dollar supporting those that choose life?

  18. - Proud Papa Bear - Wednesday, Feb 28, 24 @ 7:53 pm:

= If we become a destination state for frozen embryos, does this help us with census/reapportionment?=

With the current Supreme Court, I say they’d rule them as three-fifths of a person. /s

==For every dollar we spend supporting abortion, could we spend a dollar supporting those that choose life? ==

It’s called the social safety net and one of the two political parties has been trying to dismantle it for my entire life. Meanwhile, Pritzker is specifically spending money on things like birthing centers and eliminating the grocery tax which directly benefit those who “choose life.”
