MLB open thread

Thursday, Jun 6, 2024 - Posted by Rich Miller

* House Speaker Chris Welch was on 670 The Score’s the Mully & Haugh Show. The hosts asked him all sorts of questions about public financing for professional sports stadiums, but Welch shot them all down. No real news there.

This quote from Cub fan Welch wasn’t exactly news either, but it’s time for an MLB open thread, so here you go

Those White Sox, man. They need to just blow that thing up and start from scratch.

The Sox are just a 500 million dollar stadium away from competing I swear. /s

  2. - Anyone Remember - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 11:21 am:

Does “blowing up” include, metaphorically, a new owner?

  3. - @misterjayem - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 11:22 am:

Went to a game at Fenway this week.

Super-weird to watch a Sox team that doesn’t stink.

    ===Went to a game at Fenway===

Went to Fenway last year. It was everything I thought it would be, in a good way.

  5. - Observer - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 11:26 am:

Welch is pretty good on sports radio. His team should put him out there more. Great job. And yes, blow that damn team up.

  6. - DS - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 11:26 am:

The Cubs are mediocre by design and that stinks. Management went into the season knowing this team was likely to finish around .500 and hope for enough good luck to secure a wild card in a bloated playoff field. No interest in pursuing greatness. It’s frustrating

  7. - Mike Smith - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 11:28 am:

Great interview. Sox really do stink. Will be the worst team in baseball history.

  8. - Three Dimensional Checkers - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 11:28 am:

The White Sox are awful. Grifol is not the right manager for a rebuilding year and does not put his young players in a position to succeed. But the Cubs were expected to compete this year, and are not playing well when they play teams other than the White Sox. I don’t think any Cubs fans should be crowing about these wins.

  9. - James the Intolerant - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 11:33 am:

The Sox couldn’t even give their fans one victory against the Cubs. Bring in Crochet for relief, I don’t care. Grifol left the reliever in way too long last night, what a lightweight. Grifol is everything Reinsdorf wants, a yes man.

  10. - Fan - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 11:34 am:

I was at Wrigley last night. What a great game and fun night. Go Cubs!

  11. - Ducky LaMoore - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 11:37 am:

This is them blowing it up. But blowing up a baseball team takes a year. Then three years of rebuilding. Then they’ll hire Tony La Russa. Cycle A repeats.

  12. - Cubs in '16 - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 11:48 am:

===I don’t think any Cubs fans should be crowing about these wins.===

Caw….caw. We’ll take any kind of win at this point.

  13. - So_Ill - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 11:58 am:

As a die-hard Cubs fan, they aren’t a whole lot better than the Sox.

  14. - Google Is Your Friend - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 12:05 pm:

    - So_Ill - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 11:58 am:

Being around .500 versus being one of the worst teams ever, hmm, seems there is a big difference there to me.

  15. - BC - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 12:08 pm:

No American League team has lost more games than the White Sox have since the start of the 2011. We’re not talking about a team having a couple of bad years…this is a deep, systemic problem that will not end until there is a new ownership group.

  16. - Gravitas - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 12:10 pm:

It’s an ownership problem. Reinsdorf needs to sell the club to someone who actually cares about something other than estate planning matters.

  17. - NonAFSCMEStateEmployeeFromChatham - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 12:21 pm:

Not a good example so far, but just since the start of May Sox take 2 of 3 from the Cardinals, who then take 2 of 2 from the Cubs, who proceed to take 2 of 2 from the Sox. So who is really better and who is really the worst of the three head to head?

  18. - JS Mill - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 12:23 pm:

My Sox stink. But…it is one thing for me or another Sox fan to say it. When a Cubs fan says it…well, I want to say those are fighting words but we are so bad I can’t anymore.

    Looking forward to training camp.

  19. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 12:51 pm:

On another thread, someone asked what it would take for the White Sox to lose Rich to the Cubs. I think Rich would find the Cardinals or the Brewers more appealing than the Cubs. Trading loyalty from the Sox to the Cubs is like compounding the problem, adding insult to injury. There has to be another way. The drive from Springfield to St. Louis is about as far as the drive from Chicago to Milwaukee. I’m sure he could find a way to make either of those teams work.

  20. - Proud Papa Bear - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 1:06 pm:

I’m just happy that Canadian Football starts tonight.

  21. - Grandson of Man - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 1:19 pm:

Why should paying customers attend Sox games when ownership shows absolutely zero faith in improving this team? What’s management doing right now to show fans this level of losing is intolerable?

  22. - In 630 - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 1:40 pm:

Thing about the White Sox, it’ll never be a start from scratch until the team is sold. At least I have the Sky to entertain me enough to distract from the cheap ownership

  23. - Amalia - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 1:41 pm:

I’m just sad about the Sox Last night was a gut punch TWO balks? In the same inning? how many runs in on one hit? at least the Trib did not have game coverage…they were only today printing the story from Tuesday night’s game. Last night was a comedy show.

  24. - a drop in - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 1:43 pm:

” Sox take 2 of 3 from the Cardinals, who then take 2 of 2 from the Cubs, who proceed to take 2 of 2 from the Sox. So who is really better?”

  25. - Responsa - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 2:00 pm:

I have a much older friend who is a lifelong White Sox fan. She is 91 so she’s been there loyally for all the good and bad with this team. She is still sharp as a tack and we communicate by text both during and following almost every game. Last night she texted this message: They’re going to do me in. I always assumed it would be cancer or a broken hip or nuclear war. But no. It’s going to be the White Sox.

  26. - levivotedforjudy - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 2:01 pm:

Can you think of a worse scenario than asking for public money to build a new stadium when you are on pace for a historically bad season which no path to reverse it? In the Modert era (1901 to now), the Philadelphia Athletics won 36 games (in a 157 game season at a .235 clip. The Sox have 100 games to win another 21 to not tie be tied with them (and they will be worse after the trade deadline). This is a train wreck.

  27. - lake county democrat - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 2:18 pm:

Of course the Sox are blowing the whole thing up - what did he think the Dylan Cease trade was? And actually I think Getz is doing better than I had expected - Fedde in particular was a great signing that should bring in some top prospects. But the problem isn’t these rebuilds, it’s when it comes time to fill in the pieces. THAT’S where Hahn blew it (the Kimbrell trade, Ceasar Gonzales, Benintendi, and of course Jerry’s LaRussa debacle) and we have an owner who admits he only plays for second place.

  28. - I-55 Fanatic - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 2:37 pm:

To all groaning Cubs fans, I’d like to very gently remind you that you woke up this morning in a playoff position.

  29. - Retired SURS Employee - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 2:56 pm:

As a life long fan of the White Sox (even though I grew up on the North side of Chicago), I must say that these last two years have been awful! Ay least my entire family were able to attend Game 2 of the 2005 World Series, courtesy of my wife. Yes, I cried after watching Game 4!

  30. - Lurker - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 2:58 pm:

How much more can you blow up the White Sox? They are as annihilated as any team I’ve seen.

  31. - Friendly Bob Adams - Thursday, Jun 6, 24 @ 3:14 pm:

As of today, the Sox would need to play .500 baseball the rest of the season to avoid losing 100 games. Seems unlikely. Might as well go for the record??
