Learning from the past
Tuesday, Nov 4, 2025 - Posted by Rich Miller * One of the very few positive things to emerge from the Rauner impasse was that Illinoisans were given an intense, prolonged lesson on the importance of state budgets. So, a Republican governor who defeated an incumbent Democrat by 4 points in 2014, lost to a Democratic opponent by almost 16 points four years later…
Obviously, the Trump midterm factor played a big role in 2018, but Massachusetts’ moderate to liberal Republican governor Charlie Baker won his state by almost 34 points that very same year. * The lessons began early here. Remember this from early April of 2015 at the start of the impasse?…
Illinoisans received a tiny taste back then of what the state can expect to be forced to swallow for this four-year presidential term.

One difference I’m seeing, and it has to do solely with messaging- Rauner used to say he was using the budget and pain as leverage, now it seems the Dems are using this argument as to why they won’t vote for a clean CR.
While many dislike Trump, they are also unlikely to appreciate being used as leverage to advance a separate agenda.

These voters wanted to hurt those they don’t like, now it backfired on them. Where’s the world’s smallest violin at?
As long as these voters allow right wing billionaires and Republicans to exploit their fear and hatred, it will keep happening.

Trump and Fox are polishing up their hate rhetoric. It will be interesting (and nerve wracking) to see if enough of the voters who drank the Koolaid before will vote to take care of themselves or vote to own the libs again. I’m not holding my breath. The hate is strong in those folks.

We also learned that Rauner was up against a criminal conspiracy operated out of the Speaker’s office and certain of his own senior staff members who were more loyal to swamp creature lobbyists than to Rauner. So there’s that to consider.

Candidates just received a gift focus group from Betty Szretter. I’d clone that exact language in every door knock, stump speech, and ad.

Rauner signed that bill.

After all this time we’re back to “Because Madigan”? Some of you amaze me.

Rauner signed that bill.=
Apparently he supported it, but poor Bruce.

A good leader figures out how to get votes for his or her priorities. Period. Bruce Rauner never figured that out. He tried to use threats and bullying and human suffering and fake piety and he did not succeed. To the people who are now saying that the Democrats are doing the same thing, I say — look at who is in power here. All three branches of the Federal government are in one party’s hands. The onus is on them to get the votes they need to pass their priority legislation. So either they are not effective leaders or passing a budget is not a priority.
- Steve - Tuesday, Nov 4, 25 @ 12:48 pm:
Rauner attempted to hold off the tax increases. But, he couldn’t. Rauner didn’t have enough votes. The demand , in Illinois, for higher taxes overwhelmed everything. Check out the recent tax increase to fund public transportation. We aren’t that far away from many special interest groups claiming 4.95% isn’t enough.
- Dupage - Tuesday, Nov 4, 25 @ 12:56 pm:
Rauner cancelled the Illiana expressway losing 8 to 9 dollars in federal highway funds for every dollar “saved” in Illinois funds. Reverse leveraging of money at its worst.

Yeah, a quarter of a point on a regional tax solely to fund public transportation after suburbs raided the earlier tax funds for local non-transit spending.

Sigh. I’m sorry Betty, but when you vote against your own interests, then complain when those interests are cut, I have little sympathy for you.
You got what you wanted, you owned the libs, congrats. Now sleep in your bed.
