Today’s number: $500.25 billion

* I’m thinking this appropriations line contains a tiny little scrivener’s error…
Section 285. The sum of $500250000,000 or so much of that amount as may be necessary, is appropriated from the General Revenue Fund to the Department of Human Services for a grant to Chicago Westside Branch NAACP for operating expenses.
Hmm.

You don’t think we’re giving the NAACP half a trillion dollars? More than 9 years of the state’s budget? That mysteriously are missing the usual commas?
Lol

Oh, God. I’ve seen what you do for other people, and I want that for me.

Man, this is going to make life harder for every lobbyist who didn’t deliver on their client’s budget requests. “You couldn’t get us $1M?! NAACP got $500B! You’re fired!”

I’ll bet you $10 that some whack job conservative site picks this up and says Illinois is giving DEI a half a trillion dollars.
- Sleepwalker - Monday, Jun 1, 26 @ 3:18 pm:
Those poor bill drafters. Some young legislative staffer or LRB staff was likely entering that at 3am on limited sleep. It can be fixed.

A year from now the budget will show the West Side NAACP being hit with the largest funding cut in recorded state history.

If you think that’s a lot, wait until you get to the part about funding the south side branch.

How does that get fixed? Line item veto and it redone in November?
- Juice - Monday, Jun 1, 26 @ 4:35 pm:
Zero. The governor has the authority to reduction veto a specific line item. And that remaining amount can take effect without the GA having to do anything.
- Amalia - Monday, Jun 1, 26 @ 5:15 pm:
“…or so much of that amount as may be necessary,…” Huh?
- RNUG - Monday, Jun 1, 26 @ 7:13 pm:

Amendatory veto
- Oldtimer - Monday, Jun 1, 26 @ 8:26 pm:
Not sure if this is still possible today but in the old days a mistake like this could be corrected internally as long as the bill hadn’t been sent to the Governor.
- Norseman - Monday, Jun 1, 26 @ 9:11 pm:
=== == How does that get fixed? ==
Amendatory veto ===
Not necessarily. If it’s a discernible typo. Enrolling and Engrossing can fix it upon request by leaders - or at least they used to in my day.

Probably some “Freedom Caucus” members as well. Oh wait, they are one on the same thing. “Freedom Caucus” is comprised of conservative whack jobs. My bad.

So much for a “balanced budget” (snark). Rich, you found the missing pensions money (exclamation point).
- Roy Bean - Tuesday, Jun 2, 26 @ 11:05 am:
In 2003 with my agency being switched from GRF to an independently funded agency, via a new fee (w/ a lawsuit to follow), there wasn’t enough time left in session to line item the budget, so it was slapped in the BIMP as a one-line appropriation. My CFO, who’d been around for decades, was ecstatic and was like a kid in a candy store the whole fiscal year. That said we really needed the upgrades.
