‘The Renaissance of Miguel Vargas’

Monday, Jul 20, 2026 - Posted by Rich Miller

* One of the greatest comebacks in Chicago MLB history. A brief NSFW quote but watch it anyway

Go Sox.

If only all of your posts had news this good.
This season has been so much fun.

For someone who’s been a Sox fan since the days of Billy Pierce, the last few years have been painful. This year feels like coming out of a dark tunnel. Go Sox!

  3. - ChicagoVinny - Monday, Jul 20, 26 @ 10:37 am:

I think the thing that has been most exciting is the Sox seemingly can develop position players now. Something neither Hahn or KW could do. Every day feels like I’m reading about some new Sox player on the farm tearing it up. Which is great since you rely less on one “savior” prospect.

I remember at the end of 2024 thinking that if Miguel held his hands higher in his batting stance he would get the barrel to velocity better. He basically made that adjustment early in 2025 and has perfected his swing with more bat speed now in 2026. The numbers in 2024 were what they were, but he always had potential and was a few changes away from greatness. As much as data and algorithms are relevant in the game, which they definitely are, you need to watch the game and look for the little changes to make that can unlock potential.

Great video. In June I started off my bachelor party weekend with a White Sox game, and I’ll never forget Vargas’ 3 run home run that sparked a scoring onslaught in the third inning. That final score ended up being 22-1. What a fun team to watch this year.

Imagine getting traded from the future World Series winner late in the season to the worst team in the history of baseball. Who wouldn’t be depressed?
You could use the same backtracked music and show the fans from 2024 to today. The lack of fans, the signs “sell the team”, the paper bags over the heads, etc., etc., to now multiple sellouts, the Cell having smiles on people’s faces, tailgating in full effect. It’s a whole different atmosphere than two years ago.

Day by Day we can all get better if we choose to do so.

  8. - JS Mill - Monday, Jul 20, 26 @ 12:15 pm:

This has been a horrible summer for me. I really needed the Sox to provide a distraction and they have. The Vargas story is one of a thousand reasons why I love baseball.

    Same and same.

100 percent cried watching this. Go Sox!

I’ve been a Sox fan for almost 70 years and this season is a blessing after the last three awful seasons (combined 162 wins and 324 losses).

Too many recent Sox players (names withheld) have looked good for a partial season then faded quickly.

It’s great to see players move in a positive direction at the same time. Vargas, Antonacci (go SHG) and the Montgomery Brothers, as well as the holy-cow-who-is-this-guy Peters. And Murakami looks like he could have an amazing career.

  12. - Team Sleep - Monday, Jul 20, 26 @ 2:25 pm:

I love watching my (other) Sox. Baseball is finally fun again. Which means the league is probably careening towards a lockout…

  13. - Amalia - Monday, Jul 20, 26 @ 3:57 pm:

oh the music is so perfectly timed for the drama. we were at the friday night game he homered. it was so amazing. Loving that he’s such buds with Murakami, that hat bow thing at the All-Star game was hilarious, to Miggy’s former Dodger mate. Miguel was robbed of the MVP, with a homer and good play in the field it shoulda been him. Is the secret to Venable’s managing the candle? He recognizes the strengths of players and let’s them do their thing. Miguel found himself and we are so lucky.
