Good morning!
Wednesday, Jul 29, 2026 - Posted by Rich Miller * I played bass guitar in a few bands way back in the day and Stanley Clarke was one of my idols, even though I could never play even close to his caliber. He was up in the stars, I was barely crawling on terra firma. Anyway, Ray Gomez played a killer lead guitar on Clarke’s break-through album “School Days” and Ray passed away this week. RIP… This is an Illinois open thread.

love me some bass guitar, any bass. stand up bass player Ron Carter still alive and kicking. he frequently gives pointers on playing on Facebook.

Like to give a nod to Chicago bassist Chuck Webb and guitarist Henry Johnson who plays in the style of Wes Montgomery.
Fortunate to see/hear these top musicians in a jazz club in Streeterville.

I still own this LP. It’s a good one.
In 1986, my friend & I took the bus from Madison to Milwaukee to see Stanley Clarke play at Summerfest. We couldn’t afford a hotel so we stayed in a George Webb’s all night diner and then tried to sleep in a park on the lakefront before the morning bus. But we went in style, as we washed up in the public bathrooms at the Pfister Hotel and had breakfast there, lol. The things we do to see great live music.

Not Illinois but music related. RIP Glen Hansard.
