HGOP trolling of Speaker Welch continues on Governor’s Day

Wednesday, Aug 19, 2026 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Subscribers know more about what happened in Springfield yesterday. Today, the House Republicans have put up about 20 signs along the roads leading into the state fairgrounds…

Speaker Welch, however, won’t be attending today’s Governor’s Day events. According to a spokesperson, his kid’s first day of school is today.

The Republicans also have a new video. Click here.

…Adding… Politico had a tiny bit this morning about yesterday’s trolling that I missed because I didn’t read it until just now

Illinois Republicans trailed House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch around Springfield on Tuesday with a video-equipped van running a political ad that targets the speaker’s social media activity, focusing on instances in which his professional Instagram account liked photos of women in swimsuits. Agreed. Covering up sexual misconduct is beyond reprehensible. Hypocrisy is a close second.

    Yep.

If THAT is the best they can do in this target rich environment, yikes. Weak.

The strategy of being quiet about it and hoping it just goes away…it’s clearly not going to go away. I have doubts whether it will have any impact in November. The real impact could be in January.

Also, didn’t Sam Cahnman lose the primary? Like, by a lot? And he’s still putting out signs?

Seems like a weak explanation, his child is in middle school. I find it a little hard to believe that Speaker Welch has never missed a first day of school drop-off, but I look forward to seeing the pics on his Instagram account.

But for sure no one wanted to be photographed with him on stage for Governor’s Day.

It seems we are already prepping “…to spend more time with his family”.

Hopefully our TV Governor had a private Tom Hagen to Frank Pentangeli conversation today at the State Fair about resigning….

  6. - Think Again - Wednesday, Aug 19, 26 @ 12:03 pm:

The HGOP signs may be a bit sophomoric, but then again, they do call Welch’s documented behavior. Until he addresses this issue, he will have to take the heat.

OOPS Missed the part where he won’t be attending the fair….

  8. - Amalia - Wednesday, Aug 19, 26 @ 12:13 pm:

it won’t do much of anything to help Rs but it will help move the discussions in the Dem camp. taking far too long.

**Seems like a weak explanation, his child is in middle school.**

Nope. Plenty of reasons to criticize Welch. Being there for his kids’ first day of school - regardless of age - is most definitely NOT one of those reasons.

I’ve skipped many Dem Days because of my kids’ first days of school, and I don’t regret it for a second.

I don’t ever remember the first day of school being such a big deal as it is nowadays.

  11. - NotRIch - Wednesday, Aug 19, 26 @ 12:29 pm:

The Republicans aren’t Welch’s problem. His problems really begin when he has to start asking his caucus for their Speaker vote.

  12. - It's Just a Pill - Wednesday, Aug 19, 26 @ 1:09 pm:

A sign about covering up sexual harrassement that is covering a Sam Cahnman sign is some next level meta humor

Specifically, how will 20 Republican yard signs at the state fair, “move the discussions in the Dem camp”?

  15. - Lord of the Fries - Wednesday, Aug 19, 26 @ 1:52 pm:

It’s ok to call out hypocrisy but it honestly looks like those doing so are doing it in defense of Welch’s charges… just saying.

Also, going to your kids first day of school is a legit reason. In twenty years he’d much more regret missing that than a state fair.

  16. - SAP - Wednesday, Aug 19, 26 @ 1:56 pm:

I think the Speaker has enough clout to get a plane to Springfield after school drop off and another one home in time for pickup if that was the real reason for staying away from Governor’s Day.

=I don’t ever remember the first day of school being such a big deal as it is nowadays.=

As a parent who’s about to do this on Monday, who the hell do you think you are to tell other parents what is/isn’t a big deal. Please go take a long walk off a short dock

  18. - here we go again - Wednesday, Aug 19, 26 @ 2:27 pm:

I know it’s unfashionable to say so, but any objective person who has looked at the facts knows the so-called case against Speaker Welch is very thin gruel. But that’s the specialty of the GOP in this state.

  19. - low level - Wednesday, Aug 19, 26 @ 2:45 pm:

How is Sammy C. doing these days? I lost touch w him when I left Springfield years ago.

    Is that you Maze?

  21. - Wiley - Wednesday, Aug 19, 26 @ 3:21 pm:

This will probably leave more of a mark than the signs and moving billboards. House Dem candidates are gonna be forced to answer these questions nonstop from now till November:

=== Also, going to your kids first day of school is a legit reason. In twenty years he’d much more regret missing that than a state fair. ===

Is it a legit reason or a convenient excuse is all I am asking?

Did he decide a long time ago he was taking his kid to school today, or did he volunteer for that job because he was looking for a reason to not be in springfield for Democrat Day?

He was in Springfield yesterday for his own fundraising event around the State Fair.

If he never misses his kids first day of school - and maybe he never does - why was the Springfield fundraiser scheduled around Governor’s Day?

You gotta admit, it does not make alot of sense.

Maybe there is a logical explanation, but at this point, if Welch told me grass is green, I would go outside to doublecheck. The Instagram posts he claims he never knew about are now GOP ads, after all.

  24. - Loop Lady - Wednesday, Aug 19, 26 @ 6:21 pm:

Welch is a coward besides being a poor leader, liability to the Dems and self serving.

Please do the right thing and step aside.

  25. - Rich Miller - Wednesday, Aug 19, 26 @ 10:29 pm:

===why was the Springfield fundraiser scheduled around Governor’s Day?===

Because that happens every year by all four leaders?

Come on, man. If you know that little about this business, stop commenting.

  26. - Eire 17 - Thursday, Aug 20, 26 @ 6:02 am:

First day of school excuse is lame. I have kids. They all graduated from college and some beyond that. Sometimes my job did not allow me to be home for the first day of school. Weak excuse.
He can try and dodge it all he wants. The issue is not going away. I think he’s toast.
