August was pretty good here in beautiful DuPage County. Weather was more than acceptable, got to spend quality time with the grandkids, and the White Sox are still in first place. Tomato crop was abysmal, but that’s another story….

    Too short.

Last week you posted the Pretenders’ version of She, but the comments were off. I’ve been waiting to praise that Gram Parsons’ compilation all weekend. Emmylou Harris did a terrific job producing that. So may great tracks: Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, the Cowboy Junkies, the late, great Raul Malo with the Mavericks, Wilco, Steve Earle; all of them doing solid takes of Parsons’ material. And I haven’t even given credit to Gillian Welch, Sheryl Crow, Beck; Return of the Grievous Angel: A Tribute to Gram Parsons is just a great record and it doesn’t get enough attention these days. Thanks for touting that track.

August was nice. Went to a couple of the Grant Park Symphony concerts, ate outdoors a lot, but, like very old soil, I found it too short.

Rained to much on the weekends, but got to the Illinois State Fair for a couple of days during the week.

August has been fabulous. We’ve had nice visits with old friends and are doing lots and lots of gardening. Also want to give a shout-out to the folks at Lectric, if I may. I have a hinky knee from an old crash and their trike with optional e-boost has gotten me back in the saddle seat. It was terrifying at first, but this month I’ve begun enjoying riding again.

I don’t think I have ever cut so much grass in the month of August, thanks to the rain. I have three acres (plus I always cut onto the farmers’ property), so we are talking a lot of grass. On another note, the soybeans look fantastic right now.

Good morning Illinois. August was moving month for me as I have finalized my move to Appleton, WI from Lake County, IL to be closer to one of my son’s and his family. Retirement should include spending more times with the grandkids. It was a very emotional move for me as a life time resident in Lake County and leaving good friends. I wish my wife was still with us as she would be smiling big time but instead she is looking over us from heaven.

Couple of observations I made so far:
    1) Housing - Duplexes, are in abundance in the area up here and their are whole neighborhoods with duplexes. I’m renting one until I get the feel of the area before buying. better then an apt and about the same price or a little higher. Feels nice to still cut the grass. Why doesn’t Illinois push these more in the suburbs?
    2) Cost of living - Illinois may have high taxes but overall, I don’t think I will save alot as I do have to pay state income tax on my Pension, the food prices are a little higher and gas prices are only about .10 cheaper then what I was paying in Lake County/Kenosha County. However, energy prices are about 20% cheaper.
    3) Politics - Both parties are strong and already, I’m sick of the commercials for the governor’s race and it is not even Labor Day!!

Fear not, I’ll still be a bears fan.

===a great record and it doesn’t get enough attention these days===

In so many ways, it is the perfect tribute album.

=== the Pretenders’ version of She===

That was also my way of paying tribute to Dolly.

    “Oh, she sure could sing”
