This weekend I went to a wedding in Lemont. I’ve never really spent time there before, and I told a friend that it seemed like a delightful town.
Her immediate response was “it was nice growing up here, but none of us can afford to move back.” She said her parents downsized to a smaller home a few years ago, and the value of it already went up by 50% in half a decade. Sure enough, the IHDA reported in 2023 that only 11% of Lemont’s homes are affordable to working class people.
I think there’s a severe disconnect between state legislators and their constituents. They have no idea how much Gen Z is struggling to afford homes, because normal people don’t have time to complain to their elected official. The average joe would move to Florida before they thought to dial their state senator’s number. Time to take BUILD seriously so we can prevent a bigger exodus of residents who move to red states and take their electoral votes with them.
Saw the Chicks at the Chicago Auditorium Theatre this weekend for the 20th anniversary of their Not Ready to Make Nice album. The fallout from their criticism of W Bush and the Iraq war was a bit of a political awakening for me as a kid, and that’s embodied in this album. Felt cathartic to laugh, cry, yell, dance, sing, in light of *gestures wildly at everything*

Fun fact: Springfieldian Bill Laymon played bass for a later incarnation of the New Riders of the Purple Sage.
