MLB playoff open thread
Friday, Oct 9, 2026 - Posted by Rich Miller * Let’s try not to act like Cub fans and avoid the public rending of garments and recriminations of doom even though our team unexpectedly (before the start of the season) reached the playoffs this year. We made it to the playoffs. Life is good.

Was at the game last night and the crowd was great. I love this team and respect everything they’ve accomplished. And who knows? Maybe their not done yet. Just need Burke to throw six innings and I think their bullpen, however tattered, can cover the rest. Also praying their RISP luck is better than 1-7.
- Three Dimensional Checkers - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 8:42 am:
Yesterday is yesterday. Still a game to win Saturday, and all year they have been able to put the last game behind them and focus on the game in front of them.
- Regular democrat - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 8:51 am:
The team looked tight in front of a great crowd. Day off back to Cleveland i expect a better result.
- ChicagoVinny - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 9:08 am:
Said it in the other thread, if the season ends tomorrow, this team has far exceeded my expectations.
- rutro - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 9:09 am:
we got this
- Candy Dogood - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 9:18 am:
Da Pope.
- Skeptic - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 9:41 am:
As a fair weather fan, it ain’t over till it’s over. They showed some moxy, at least until Cleveland blew it open
- Team Sleep - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 9:41 am:
Maybe next time the Sox should play death metal instead of slow jams…
- Hmmmm - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 10:04 am:
they’re undefeated in Cleveland in this series. Let’s go boys.
- OutOfState - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 10:13 am:
Not from IL, so not a fan of either Chicago team, but I was impressed how great the crowd was even when things were rough last night. Rooting for the Sox on Saturday
Signed, an NL fan
- Go Chicago! - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 10:18 am:
The last two losses were ugly. What some are overlooking is the White Sox position players did not field some balls cleanly. Yes, a few of the chances were not routine plays, but the catches that were missed were not impossible chances.
There is one more game to be played in Cleveland don’t quit until the last out is made.
- Boone Logan Square - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 10:28 am:
The Sox winning a postseason series (which they did against the Astros) was so much more than I thought they could accomplish when the season started.
Still hoping for a series win here, but happy about this season even if it is about to end.
- Hmmmm - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 10:31 am:
Also not MLB, sorry, but RIP Mike Ditka. What a legacy.
- levivoted4judy - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 10:35 am:
This has been a phenomenal season. Do I wish they had traded a lot of young talent for a strong starting pitcher? NO! That will come over the next 2 years and they may actually be 3 years ahead of schedule already.
- Lurker - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 10:38 am:
We are in the same position we were two games ago, we gotta win one to move on. This is not the greatest team, but they sure are exciting and are just piling on the excitement!
- Original Rambler - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 10:42 am:
Rooting hard for the Sox but the difference in plate discipline between the two clubs last night was stark. I fear Cleveland has too many smart hitters, laying off balls outside the zone. Sox hitters doing too much chasing. Going to need something special from Burke. Go Sox (banned punctuation)
- GO SOX GO - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 10:43 am:
I really thought they’d come out strong early in the game. A 9th inning 2 put rally would have been epic. I still think they can do this.
- Banish Misfortune - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 10:45 am:
I have always been sorta indifferent to the Sox. But that has changed. Maybe the Pope. Maybe just because with so much awfulness every day, that I have been following and cheering them on.
So I’ll say something I have never said before: Go Sox!
And I probably got the cheer wrong. But hey, I am proud of them.
- Plus Side - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 10:51 am:
Because of the poor seasons recently, the White Sox understandably did not have a great season ticket base this year. This had a positive effect of the commoners being able to buy postseason tickets in 2026.
- Flyin' Elvis'-Utah Chapter - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 11:17 am:
Simply playing to see who gets embarrassed by the Rays rotation.
- Proud Sucker - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 11:20 am:
“I fear Cleveland has too many smart hitters, laying off balls outside the zone. Sox hitters doing too much chasing.”
17 walks in 2 games. You cannot walk one batter per inning and expect to win. Burke has got to be sharp, which he can.
- Annon'in - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 11:25 am:
In the play-offs one win from ALCS….focus, plate discipline and suggest pitchers to shake their pitch choices…seems like the bull pen start approach might mean Cleveland has seen the SOX hitters too much. Fingers still crossed.

“Let’s try not to act like Cub fans and avoid the public rending of garments and recriminations of doom”
Man, you Southsiders have got a Lincoln Continental sized chip on your shoulders when it comes to the Cubbies.
- Rate Field - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 11:56 am:
Memo to Sox ownership. The two recent games demonstrated it: There is nothing wrong with the current stadium. If you build a quality team, the fans will come.
- H-W - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 12:12 pm:
Good luck, Sox fans. I hope you get this one. My son who lives in Chicagoland married a Latina. Her family convinced him to switch from being a fair-weather, “because I live in Chicago” Cubs fan (and the weather is rarely fair on the Northside), to a die-hard Sox fan. I hope you will all be celebrating a League Championship appearance this weekend.
- charles in charge - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 12:42 pm:
It’s weird how a lot of Sox fans seem incapable of enjoying their own team’s success without dragging the Cubs into it somehow. I think some of you dislike the Cubs more than you like the Sox.
- JS Mill - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 12:50 pm:
=We made it to the playoffs. Life is good.=
Exactly. We are playing October baseball and still have a shot at the ALCS. Better than I could have imagined in April.
- BC - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 1:13 pm:
Life is indeed good. Two disappointing home games, but this season has been a joy. Let’s just hope Will Venable has learned a lesson about pitching to Jose Ramirez….particularly when he’s batting left handed and especially with first base open.
- Stones - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 1:31 pm:
Don’t pitch to Ramirez!
- H-W - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 1:32 pm:
@ Charles in Charge
Chill out. Chicago has two teams. They have a right to go at each other, right?
Here in Middle Earth America, we would love to have one team. Part time even /sm. Where I live, we have to choose between 3.5 hours to Chicago, or 3.0 hours to St. Louis. Heck. I am so far west in IL that U of Iowa gets more coverage than U of I Champaign.
Good luck each who has a favorite team still in it!

===lot of Sox fans seem incapable of enjoying their own team’s success without===
In my case here, I was admonishing people not to be like the Cub fans. Their perverse love of loss can be contagious.
- Cubs - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 2:14 pm:
I’m a Cubs fan and like most Cubs fans I am also cheering for the Sox!! Let’s go…put it on the Board!!
- H-W - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 2:53 pm:
===perverse love===
Hehehe. Winner-winner of the week. Good luck Rich on your therapy, and Peace
- Archpundit - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 3:14 pm:
I never thought Reinsdorf would fix the team and certainly not as fast as he did so good luck to the Sox. Given the Pope and everything, maybe it’s a destiny thing this year.
- Rich Miller - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 3:22 pm:
===I never thought Reinsdorf would fix the team===
Kinda doubt this is all on him
- Archpundit - Friday, Oct 9, 26 @ 4:02 pm:
==Kinda doubt this is all on him
Certainly not, but he put people in and got out of the way. I will not be engaging in any more pro-Reinsdorf discussion
