Question of the day

Monday, Oct 27, 2008 - Posted by Rich Miller

It’s all politics all the time as the nation lurches towards another presidential election day. So, let’s give ourselves a little diversion, shall we?

Are you watching the World Series? Why or why not? Also, which team is your favorite? Explain fully, please.

  1. - Six Degrees of Separation - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 11:19 am:

Who’s winning, the Cubs or the Sox?

  2. - VanillaMan - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 11:23 am:

I like the Phillies because of their history. A World Series win is where this franchise is right now. It just feels good.

  3. - culatr - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 11:24 am:

Can’t watch it. Still grieving over the Cubs.

  4. - OneMan - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 11:24 am:

Not watching, I guess I am rooting for the Rays since it would be fun to point out to Cub’s fans another team that has been around for a short time and has won it all.

  5. - wordslinger - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 11:25 am:

Yes, but not as closely as I had hoped to (you all know what I mean).

I like the kids on the Rays and the fact that they got there with just about the lowest payroll in the league. Still, I can’t root for a team that plays baseball in a dome. It’s unnatural, like air travel, another abomination of the 20th Century.

So to quote Waylon, God Bless Old Philadelphia, they were standing in the rain…..

  6. - Vote Quimby! - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 11:32 am:

Watched more than I thought…at least parts of 3 games so far. I’m actually rooting for the Phillies for the exact reason oneman said: to prevent another expansion team from winning WS before the Cubs do. (I’m actually more embarrased about 9 playoff losses in a row than the whole 100-years thing…)

  7. - chic ster - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 11:34 am:

I hate watching baseball played indoors.

  8. - Bill S. Preston, Esq. - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 11:38 am:

I forgot it was even on until I was in the bar last night and saw it on the tv. Not a big enough baseball fan to give a crap if there are no Chicago teams involved - or just plain interesting teams. The Rays and Phillies? Snorefest.

  9. - Dan S. a Voter and Cubs Fan - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 11:51 am:

I am watching because I graduated from Springfield Southeast High School in 1975 with the Phillies right fielders Mom.

  10. - zatoichi - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 11:57 am:

No Sox, No Cubs - Don’t care. Used to be a monster fan then over time baseball has just drifted off the interest list. Live games are fine (last one was 5 years ago), TV games = changer time, radio games = OK background noise while doing physical work.

  11. - IMBack - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 12:07 pm:

I’m watching to follow Ben Zobrist of Eureka, IL. Rooting for the Phillies, but wouldn’t be all that sad if the Rays and their young talent come back to win it. Pretty decent series so far, IMO.

I was a die hard Cubs fan for 30 years. I have officially given up on the Cubs. It feels good to be free of that baggage. To me, the Cubs were like a boyfriend who treated his girlfriend like sh*t (or vice versa). I got tired of the abuse and I have left the relationship.

  12. - BehindTheScenes - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 12:13 pm:

We’re watching because the Phillies right-fielder graduated from Chatham Glenwood High School in 1997 with our son. Go Phillies!

  13. - Just Asking - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 12:35 pm:

Why bother, Cubs and Sox are out. Now the Illini football team is heading into the crapper with their b-ball team rebuilding. I only need to watch the last 3 minutes of any Profesional B-Ball game. Which leaves me with no sports until April when the Cubs open the season. What a bleak winter. Do impeachment hearings count as sports?

  14. - Z - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 12:45 pm:

I’m still waiting for the Cubs to have their turn…it’s only been 1 century so far.

  15. - doubtful - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 12:49 pm:

Not a baseball fan. Thankfully, the NFL is in full swing now so I don’t have to change the radio station during sports news.

  16. - Been There - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 12:50 pm:

Been watching most of it but not planning my schedule around it the way I would if it were the White Sox. The Phillies pitching, especially the bull pen has been fantastic. The Phils winning one in Tampa brought the home field advantage to them and it looks like they might use it well.
I hope it doesn’t go to the seventh game. I’m heading over to a pre-election James Carville/Mary Matalin forum that night at St. Xavier. Even the World Series takes a back seat to the election.

  17. - Some Guy - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 1:09 pm:

Today’s the 326th anniversary of the founding of Philadelphia*, so it would be cool if the Phillies clinched it tonight.

    * source: Wikipedia, so take it with a grain of salt or three.

  18. - downhereforyears - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 1:34 pm:

Not watching at all, was disappointed that there was no Sunday night football bewcause of the Series. If I had to pick my choice I would have to say the Rays. Only reason they beat the
Sox. Baseball at the end of October is no fun when its all east coast teams.

  19. - NL - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 2:07 pm:

Since only one league plays real baseball, it’s pretty easy to root for the Phillies even though I don’t like them.

  20. - bored now - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 2:28 pm:

nope. no time. i try to make time for america’s real sport — football — but haven’t had time for that, either. glad to see the dolphins beat the bills!!!

  21. - Skeeter - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 2:33 pm:

    No.

The strike a few years ago turned me off to baseball, and I never got interested again.

When baseball went on strike, I found other sports that I enjoyed more — auto racing (Formula One) and soccer. I would rather watch either than a baseball game. I will sit in front of the television watching an auto race, but don’t view watching a baseball game as good use of my time.

  22. - Irish - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 2:40 pm:

Not watching much. I used to be a very interested baseball fan. My dad and I would sit on the porch or be working on whatever project he had going and would listen to the Cardinal’s games on his little transistor radio. Many happy memories there. But then the strikes came and high paid players were sitting the bench because they had an owie and it just wasn’t the same. I had watched and listened to the likes of Stan the Man Musial, and Bob Gibson when he finished pitching with a broken leg, and all of the other iron men of that era, and those guys were players that loved the game. They used to play double headers and it was no big deal. Now some of these guys can’t even go a whole game. I was half heartedly pulling for Tampa Bay just because I wanted to see the team with the lowest combined salary in the league win a series to show it isn’t all about the money.

  23. - Highland, IL - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 2:53 pm:

I have a six year old boy who is discovering the wonders of baseball. I, of course, am encouraging this new found love.

He’s rooting for the Phillies & I’m rooting for the Rays. He’s a happy boy! (So Far)

  24. - What planet is he from again? - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 3:27 pm:

I’m watching because (a) I like baseball, (b) It’s cool to have Jayson Werth in there and (c) the Phillies have the Ex-Cub Factor working against them…I gotta see if they can overcome that!

  25. - school is fun - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 4:44 pm:

I watch the food channel “Diners, Drive In, and Dives”. I will flip to the World Series but I am not watching all the time.

  26. - Todd - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 7:28 pm:

No it’s hunting season. enough said.

  27. - Anonymous - Monday, Oct 27, 08 @ 8:13 pm:

Nope. I’ve never been big on sports unless playing or I know someone playing.
