Friday, Dec 12, 2008 - Posted by Rich Miller

* As I told you earlier, we’re going to be publishing all weekend, but we should still have a video. This seems appropriate…

Once I had mountains in the palm of my hand,
And rivers that ran through ev’ry day.
    I must have been mad,
I never knew what I had,
Until I threw it all away.

Exceedingly appropriate. And always good to see a young dreamboaty BD at the end of a long week.

You certainly be a hurtin’ if you throw it all away…

  4. - Speaking At Will - Friday, Dec 12, 08 @ 7:43 pm:

This video is exceptionally appropriate for this weeks events.

It seems like music always puts a different perspective on things, and in this case its no different.

The shame of this Dylan tune is that it could be applied to so many people who are involved in this scandal. Rezko, Kelly, Cari, Levine, and before its all over many more who we can only guess at this point.

However I want to beleive that this is a water shed moment for the State of Illinois. Surely these events will spur real change in Illinois that makes this state repectable again.

Surely these events will make voters pause and take just a few moments to get informed on who they are voting for before they simply rely on party affiliation, or tired doctrines from a day gone by.

Surely these last six years will show even the coldest hearts in the Illinois politcal landscape that the old way of doing things is not acceptable and has real effects on people. (Drug treatment centers, childrens hospital, corrections employees, etc)

Maybe I am just feeling some Friday night optimism, but I am clinging to the hope that Tuesday December the 9th is the day that the people of Illinois realized how out of control this state is and began to take it back.

So Rich, is there any truth to the story that Dylan quit smoking for 6 months leading to the changes in his voice during the Nashville Skyline period?

I always wondered why he rolled his eyes all the time. Looks like he’s having a seizure. Not to take anything away from him - big fan here.

  7. - Toni H. - Friday, Dec 12, 08 @ 8:45 pm:

Great choice! Love Dylan - wow - I don’t remember him so young….although I grew up on his tunes.

  8. - HoBoSkillet - Friday, Dec 12, 08 @ 11:54 pm:

Great Choice and keep up the good work Rich! We all are counting on you.

  9. - DuPage Dave - Saturday, Dec 13, 08 @ 7:51 am:

It’s difficult now to remember the hope some people had for Blagojevich. The first Democrat in 26 years to be elected Governor, much younger than George Ryan, his accomplishments were limited but he seemed to be a man with potential for growth.

While he talked a good game in the beginning, he ultimately disappointed everyone who had rolled the dice and bet he would be a good governor. Now the crooked bargains and cheap sell-out caught on tape make up the final chapter in a sad novel. He is so much more embarrassing than Carol Mosely Braun, who merely squandered an opportunity and let herself and the state down. Blagojevich sank to the bottom and does not understand how he got there.

He did truly throw it all away.

    Great clip, Rich.

Thanks, Rich; right on target. I don’t remember seeing Dylan in this tribute-to-Cash hairdo before!

  11. - Diogenes - Saturday, Dec 13, 08 @ 10:02 am:

Excellent choice, Rich…Although I don’t know which is more appropriate - “I Threw It All Away” or Dylan being introduced by the man made famous by “Folsom Prison Blues”! You hit the daily double here.

  12. - Speedie - Saturday, Dec 13, 08 @ 10:44 am:

Also, note that it was Johnny Cash who introduced him. It’s my understanding that Cash was the first to put Dylan on TV nationwide. Any confirmation?

  13. - DuPage Dave - Saturday, Dec 13, 08 @ 11:23 am:

The internet tells us that Bob Dylan performed on the Steve Allen show on NBC in February 1964, not quite five years before the January 1969 performance on the Johnny Cash show on ABC.

  14. - Rich Miller - Saturday, Dec 13, 08 @ 2:19 pm:

===You hit the daily double here. ===

    That was the point.

  15. - wordslinger - Saturday, Dec 13, 08 @ 2:21 pm:

Speedie, you’re right. It was his ABC show from the Ryman in Nashville.

Ed Sullivan previously had scheduled Dylan, but objected at rehearsal to his selection of “Talkin John Birch Society Paranoid Blues.” Dylan refused to change the tune and walked out.

Johnny Cash was the real deal. When he played “Sunday Morning Coming Down” on his show, ABC told him he had to change the lyrics (”…wishing Lord that I was stoned..”). Cash told them to stick it and played the song straight on network TV.

The writer, Kris Kristoffersen was in the audience at the Ryman (he wasn’t big yet) and said he cried like a baby when Cash performed the song.
