Question of the day

Thursday, Jun 3, 2010 - Posted by Rich Miller

* The setup

An early fixture in the young administration of Gov. Pat Quinn is going back to the private sector.

Bob Reed, 56, of Evanston has been Quinn’s communications director but told me Wednesday he’s moving on.

“I’m leaving state government early this month and, after a short European vacation, returning to my business writing and consulting business, which is ambitiously titled Reed Enterprises,” he said. “This assignment has been a great experience, and as I told you some 18 months ago, I do believe in public service — now more than ever.”

* The Question: Who should be Gov. Pat Quinn’s new state spokesperson? Snark heavily encouraged.

…Adding… An explanation would be nice as well.

…Adding more... I already knew this and deliberately withheld it to make the QOTD more fun, but the Tribune is reporting that Bill Cunningham, who is currently Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart’s chief of staff, will replace Reed. Ignore the facts! Keep commenting!

You’re assuming that Pat Quinn will want to say anything to anyone over the next few months.

  12. - Obamarama - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 12:20 pm:

    Joe Biden.

  13. - Skeeter - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 12:23 pm:

Mark Kirk. He has no problem changing positions on a dime and details really don’t matter to him.

  14. - ivoted4judy - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 12:24 pm:

Quinn has already picked his replacement: Just like picking a campaign manager, the big “Q” has done an extensive nation wide search and will be naming his new spokesman next week. The inside info is it will be a real political insider from Idaho!! This guy has extensive political street level brawling back room expereince that one can only get running a local school board race in a suburb of Boise!!!!!!!!! Bill Brady and Patty Shuh won’t know what hit em!!!!!!!!!

  15. - Niles Township - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 12:26 pm:

I hear budget spokeswoman Kelly Kraft, a forner Fox Chicago reporter, is on the list. Sorry for the lack of snark.

  16. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 12:27 pm:

Bill Brady seems to be helping Quinn’s chances, why not try him in this role too?

  17. - Vote Quimby! - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 12:28 pm:

    Steve Brown.

  24. - fedup dem - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 12:50 pm:

I nominate myself, since the post pays a good deal more than I am currently making. However, inasmuch as the Governor would have to clear the selection with Mayor Daley, there is no chance of that ever happening.

  25. - Stones - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 12:55 pm:

Marcel Marceau…because actions speak louder than words

  26. - OneMan - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 12:57 pm:

I would suggest an Olympic Gymnast…

Perhaps the spokesperson for the Idaho office of tubers

  27. - Steve - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 1:02 pm:

Alderman Burke’s right hand man Pete Andrews. He can look out for Burke’s $300,000 “investment” in Pat Quinn.

  28. - Obamarama - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 1:03 pm:

    ===Ignore the facts! Keep commenting!===

Careful, Miller. The Tea Party might sue you for stealing their mission statement.

  29. - Stallion - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 1:05 pm:

I would say Duncan Keith, I mean really, the guy has lost seven teeth and we are in poor fiscal shape, so why not look the part !!

  30. - Dan S, a taxpayer and a Cubs Fan - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 1:09 pm:

Bring back the “Spin Sisters” they were entertaining.

  31. - Plutocrat03 - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 1:14 pm:

Jon Lovitz reprising his SNL role of the pathological liar.

  32. - unclesam - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 1:14 pm:

Did Quinn advertise that this is to be a “paid” position — since neither he nor the State have much in the way of cash?

With that, I’ve heard Chicago legend and media master Jerry Springer was taking the position.

  33. - Loop Lady - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 1:14 pm:

    Thanks, but I already have a job…:)

  34. - wordslinger - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 1:24 pm:

Pee Wee Herman…needs the work and the suits still fit.

  39. - hmmm - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 2:20 pm:

That drunk guy who was getting signatures for Cohen. Or maybe Cohen’s former girlfriend? Reporter’s wouldn’t know what to do…

  40. - RedBird - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 2:22 pm:

Matt Erwin, that guy is the bee’s knees and is stuck in Kentucky. Have a heart Quinn, give the kid the job.

  41. - really? - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 2:27 pm:

Now that he is to be single-Al Gore. the two can be bachelors together.

  42. - Hunterdon - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 2:30 pm:

Abbey Ottenhoff - if she could face the media and keep a straight face during Blago’s tenure, she could certainly do a great job for Quinn now!

  43. - Bring Back Boone's - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 2:36 pm:

Bring back the three horsewomen of the apocalypse! Everyone else in Rod’s administration is still working there anyways…

  44. - South Side Mike - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 2:41 pm:

Al Bundy. Why, he had a common man’s touch, and could really connect with the blue collar workers in this state (all 500 of them remaining). Not to mention, he could relate to all of the state vendors crying out for payment, because like them, he had beem wiped out by profligate spenders with nary a shred of guilty conscience.

Other options include the spirit of the late Bob Bell and (HT to: And I Approved This Message) Ozzie Guillen.

  45. - CircularFiringSquad - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 2:51 pm:

Clearly every word out of NoTaxBill’s mouth help The Governor…..so the job goes to him!

  46. - Bill - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 2:54 pm:

Rod Blagojevich. They worked so well and so closely in the past.

  47. - Chicago Cynic - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 2:55 pm:

How about JBT? “What’s she thinking” as a motto would go well with this job.

That said, it’s about time Bob “returned” to the private sector. Made Cheryle Jackson look like a communications genius.

  48. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 2:58 pm:

Robert Gibbs…the master of double-talk and deceit!

  49. - Wumpus - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 3:01 pm:

  57. - Aaron Chambers - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 3:59 pm:

    Aw, shucks!

  58. - keepitsimple - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 4:05 pm:

  60. - Third Generation Chicago Native - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 4:54 pm:

Jeff Goldblatt (Fox news at 9 current co anchor) he is a poker face, dry, boring personality.

  61. - Justme - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 5:25 pm:

==Ignore the facts! Keep commenting! ==

Rush Limbaugh, since that’s his motto.

  62. - soccermom - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 5:32 pm:

See how great Aaron is? His charming, “aw shucks” demeanor would be a perfect fit for Quinn’s populist principles.

    A perfect choice.

  63. - Boone Logan Square - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 5:35 pm:

Scott Lee Cohen. Because reporters would certainly wait for him to show up.

  64. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 5:43 pm:

Aaron has much better things to do. lol

  65. - Responsa - Thursday, Jun 3, 10 @ 6:19 pm:

Ozzie Guillen. Ozzie shows the emotion and passion that PQ lacks, and has, in the past been on a winning team so maybe he can inspire Quinn
    to come from behind.

Also, no one can understand what the heck Ozzie says, which could actually be useful to Quinn –who usually does not know what he is talking about.

Finally, Ozzie could help out with the firings and demotions that Quinn should do within his administration but apparently doesn’t have the stomach for. Nah nah nah nah, hey, heeey good bye.

  66. - HatShopGirl - Friday, Jun 4, 10 @ 12:57 am:

I hear Chinta Strausbourg is looking for a PR gig. If not, how about me? I’m shopping for a new hat to wear.

C’mon Rich Miller, you know you want me to rep Quinn. Think of the spin!
