When you play the percentages, you can make a bad thing worse…

  2. - dr clean - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 3:56 pm:

For how long has Bill Brady been governor?

  3. - Concerned Observer - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 3:57 pm:

Now THAT is a hell of an ad. Very well done. A+.

  4. - Joe from Joliet - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 3:58 pm:

And Quinn will want to talk about dogs. Edge to Brady.

  5. - Bluefish - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:00 pm:

I heard a similar ad on the radio yesterday morning. This will be an effective message for him if he is able to saturate the market.

  6. - Rich Miller - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:00 pm:

It’s even better with the sound off - the true test of a good ad.

  7. - just sayin' - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:03 pm:

Childish. Not as childish as those unplug-Blago’s hair dryer t-shirts, but childish.

I think the IL GOP’s brain trust is located in a pre-school somewhere.

At least Quinn shows up to work most of the time.

  8. - Anonymous - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:03 pm:

I don’t know about that Rich. The whole thing has a very cartoon-y feel to it, but the image of the worried looking kid just doesn’t fit. Nonetheless, it’s a solid hit and a solid ad.

  9. - Responsa - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:07 pm:

Agree with dr. clean that the end sentence “Bill Brady Governor” is a little strange. Should have said “You have the chance in November to elect Bill Brady Governor”

Otherwise, a really excellent ad. Rarely does an opponent’s attack ad look so warm and sweet and un-attacky while getting the negative message across and the job done. A Santa Claus analogy and a smiling Quinn signing those checks for raises. Love it. Solid A.

  10. - chuckT - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:07 pm:

Kirk was a pretty mature looking 16 year old, dontcha think?

  11. - Thomas Westgard - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:07 pm:

I don’t think it will help Brady. It says Quinn’s name over and over, so if you aren’t paying attention, it just increases awareness of Quinn’s name. And if you are paying attention, it doesn’t say a single word about what Brady will do differently. So I think this is a classic example of why negative campaigning usually flops.

  12. - Rich Miller - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:09 pm:

Mature and well-armed, chuckT. I thought he was an anti-gunner.

  13. - VanillaMan - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:13 pm:

Great ad for a poor nominee. A+

  14. - soccermom - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:15 pm:

Any info on the size of the buy?

  15. - Niles Township - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:15 pm:

This is a good ad. I note its a 30 second spot. I assume this is meant for TV and not the internet. Any word on a buy?

  16. - Screwball - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:17 pm:

Clarion clearly doctored that picture when he took out the puppies, the bald eagle and barefoot Jesus just to make Kirk look bad.

  17. - Betsy - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:17 pm:

Governor — reach into ole Betsy and see if you can find an Axelrod memo on how to respond to that. Ouch.

  18. - And I Approved This Message - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:19 pm:

“We’re gonna need a bigger boat.” I’m pretty sure the picture is from “Jaws.”

  19. - Dave Clarkin - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:30 pm:

Rich, you missed the video of Mark Kirk’s near-death boat capsizing incident:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7dkbEQHSv8

  20. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:32 pm:

    Dear Senator Brady:

You really need to PAY taxes before you can complain about government wasting your tax dollars.

I’m just saying. And I hope Mica does too.

    YDD

  21. - also just saying' - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:42 pm:

just because someone shows up to work doesn’t mean they get much done. Just look at how many “Present” votes Senator Obama made.

  22. - GAAP - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:44 pm:

You should blame us for Bill Brady not paying his taxes.

  23. - Name Withheld - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 4:44 pm:

It’s a good ad, but not as good as “Bill Brady reads stuff - stuff you can believe in.”

  24. - too obvious - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 5:01 pm:

Good point. Should Brady really be complaining about spending when he hasn’t paid taxes and when he’s voted on bills to benefit himself?

  25. - too obvious - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 5:03 pm:

oh my god I just watched that again. Could the font for Jason Plummer’s name at the end be any smaller?

  26. - Amuzing Myself - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 5:43 pm:

    Too obvious:

Yes, it could not be on there at all.

  27. - Old Milwaukee - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 6:19 pm:

Brady had better start pointing out that he paid over $300,000 in taxes in the last 5 years, despite the fact that he didn’t have to pay any in 2009.

I would think that’s more than most people reading this blog have paid in the last decade, including me - but not you Rich.

  28. - one day at a time - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 6:22 pm:

“Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell’s heart I stab at thee; for hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool! and since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee, thou damned whale! Thus, I give up the spear!”
    - Moby Dick, Herman Melville

  29. - Excessively Rabid - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 8:59 pm:

Well, if you’re the GOP, you don’t really want to discuss Plummer any more than you have to. It’s solid on the basic message: anybody is better than Quinn, even Brady.

  30. - Funny - Friday, Jul 23, 10 @ 11:45 pm:

Funny I don’t remember all that stuff you bring up about Brady effecting Brady’s poll numbers. We know the wage increase thing has been giving Quinn fit’s can’t wait for the TV AD talking about the laid off workers paying for Quinn’s campaign flights.

  31. - downstater - Sunday, Jul 25, 10 @ 5:51 pm:

Since when does negative campaigning flop? This ad wasn’t designed to talk about what Bill Brady will do…it’s designed to go negative on Quinn. That’s why Quinn’s name is brought up repeatedly along with negative issues/emotions.

Dan Hynes had some brilliant negative ads vs. Quinn in the primary and closed a huge gap in a hurry. I think this was a very solid ad by the Brady campaign. Finally something good out of their camp.

  32. - wordslinger - Monday, Jul 26, 10 @ 7:06 am:

It’s hard to not hit a home run. Quinn grooved a fat one in the wheelhouse with the pay raises.

Whoever steps in it least will win.

  33. - Dead Head - Monday, Jul 26, 10 @ 8:25 am:

    That ain’t no sunfish!

  34. - SouthernIL - Monday, Jul 26, 10 @ 8:40 am:

Enought “Mud Slinging”! Geez!! Sad when one can’t run on one’s own merit.
