The Rauner campaign flat-out denies anybody told her that. Ahern firmly stood by her story this morning. She also denied, and deemed it personally insulting, that anyone would claim her NFL questions were planted by the Quinnsters. * The first-time candidate might be dismayed at the way he’s being treated by the city’s media, but it’s merely his turn in the barrel. The governor has served his time in said barrel quite often and will be back in there very soon. And it’s only gonna get worse. Much worse. * And while the governor’s campaign talked to me about the NFL abuse issue and Rauner’s Steelers ownership two nights ago, Chicago reporters can always smell a good local angle on a hot national story, and the NFL abuse scandal is the hottest thing going right now. Rauner, as a part-owner of an NFL team, gave them the perfect local angle. Craig Dellimore…
Why Rauner wasn’t prepared to answer that question is just beyond me. He could’ve turned it into a huge positive. Instead, he whiffed.

But why is the “watchdog media” quizzing candidates on these issues which border on irrelevant to governing one of the nation’s largest states?
Is our state’s condition so bad that everyone wants to avoid talking about substantive problems?

Um, I beg to differ. Domestic violence is a huge issue and should not be swept under the rug. Mr. Rauner is a part-owner of an NFL franchise. It is not “irrelevant” to suggest he should have a position let alone an opinion.

Seriously, your guy needs questions in advance? Why are you telling TV reporters that your guy is a lightweight? You didn’t think that would get on the air? That’s a big bowl of bad.
TV reporters, always, always, hunt the local angle on a national story. That’s how you get on the air.

John Boch, if the endorsement of an NFL figure like Mike Ditka is relevant to the governors race, then surely Rauners opinion on the NFL team he owns when he is running based on his business leadership is relevant to the governors race.

agree that rauner is real weak off script. cant always get by with promising a detailed plan later.
this was not a difficult issue to grasp. even if he owned no NFL team stock, he should have been able to give a sympathetic, supportive, understanding answer.

It boils down to Rauner not being able to think on his feet, and see the political positives of answering questions.
Rauner has been drilled from Jump Street; Don’t say anything. Stay on message. Your responses will come back to haunt you.
There is a feel that anything, I mean anything, Bruce says is going to be seen negative, unless it is vetted to the talking points, no, the vetted talking points, continuing a narrative.
Running for political office, you need the skill set to “listen, react, respond, own”
Rauner wasn’t listening to the softball question. Easy peasy. Rauner gave reaction that was about “focus”, his focus, with a response the programming by his Crew would normally like to evade direct answers, but How can you own it, being a father and a husband?
Rauner may be great at retail politics, but understanding the media, how to handle them (barring students, really?) and also giving them “something” and also accepting softball questions is an art, a skill, a science, that Rauner is failing.
Speaks volumes to the image of an empty suit, unable to formulate a position on child abuse or spousal battery.
Empty suits, driven by talking points… they don’t have a position on child abuse or spousal battery on their feet, they can’t see the real beyond the phony.
Of course Rauner doesn’t approve of either. Of course, as a father and husband Rauner is sickened.
Candidate, GOP Nominee, programmed Bruce Rauner forgot that. It’s a rookie mistake, brought on by a Crew to transfixed on control and image.
The Rauner Crew has to own this too. 1) Rauner owns part if an NFL teams! 2) It’s in the news. 3) Governor of Minnesota weighed in.
Bad form on the 1st response, poor staff work, “Speaking for…” full response was bush league.
Get. It. Together.

I don’t know if your are fully recovered yet Rich but your wit is definitely back at 100% and firing on all cylinders!
People coming from industry who feel like their lives has been pretty public generally get a huge wake-up call when entering politics. I think all of us in IL have front row seats to a new showing of this long running play and it looks like it is going to be a very entertaining show.

Also, an Illinois governors opinion on the NFL has added relevance when the only Illinois NFL team plays at a stadium owned by Chicago taxpayers and which had a renovation financed by Illinois taxpayers that only went through after an Illinois governor signed the bill approving it.

Its very relevant. The C-H-I-C-A-G-O Bears are a football team that plays in Chicago, Illinois. Bruce is running for Governor of the STATE of Illinois. A Bears player is involved (at least tangentially) in this mess. The Chicago Bears have issued a statement saying they support the NFL.
Bruce is NOT running to be Governor to break up “public sector unions” and turn pensions into 401K’s. Presumably he is interested in Public Service and wants to Govern all of the People of Illinois.
If Bruce cant stand the heat, then go back to being a “home day trader”.

This wasn’t a whiff. You can’t whiff if you don’t swing. He thought she was throwing a fastball and instead she sat a tennis ball on the tee. He chose to take a walk instead of hitting it out of the park. As a result he gave Quinn a backwards K without even suiting up.
I think his honest answer would have been: “hey, we’re in touch with Silver and the NBA about how much they suffered from the Sterling/Clippers rascism fiasco so we can ensure the NFL doesn’t take that big of a hit.” He thought better of it and went with no comment.
The sad thing is it never occurred to him to just say “I cant speak for the Steelers orginazation or the NFL but I can speak As a husband and father….”

Bruce should stay in the private sector…he excels there…it is beyond me why he thinks he can jump into politics at this point in his life and simply transfer his success in that realm to politics…people have spent decades getting to know the drill in politics and it is something that a checkbook simply cant buy you…he’s either arrogant, ignorant, or both…

The above tells me that there was a staff fail here. As has been repeatedly and accurately pointed out by commenters Raunervich needs a script. After the conversation referenced above, they should have crafted a script dealing with it.

Team Rauner is giving Team Quinn an awful lot of credit.
The Chicago Tribune editorialized on Tuesday against the NFL.
Mary Mitchell wrote a critical piece on Monday.
And perhaps most relevant, Ahern tweeted the story at 10:30 am yesterday.
I guess if it wasn’t in their poll, they don’t want to talk about it.
Welcome to campaigns, but more importantly, welcome to governing.
You may say you don’t have a social agenda, but social agendas tend to get thrust on governors.
George Ryan probably didn’t think he’d be dealing with the death penalty when he ran in 1998, I am sure.

What Rauner lacks is empathy. He doesn’t listen with his heart at all, and I’m beginning to have serious questions about his ability to think things through. He certainly has not displayed a quick wit.
But it’s the empathy thing that got him this time. Domestic violence and child abuse are horrible things. All he had to do was drop a few cliches, even, about that. But all he reacted to, I suspect, was HIS ownership in the Steelers and what that meant. He didn’t hear the deeper question as it DID apply to Illinois - You’ve never talked about this issue, it’s in the news, waddya got to say?”

I agree with Rich the governor has been in that barrel and will be back in it soon enough.

He gave the answer you may expect from a venture capitalist….calculate and deliver a response based on a personal financial impact. He focused his response based on his percent of ownership interest and didn’t even think about other social, moral and ethical implications important to all those voters he is supposed to be so connected to. Bruce at his best…think about “self interest” above all else. Yeah, being wealthy doesn’t mean your disconnected from you constituency….until you prove it so.

Once again, a missed opportunity.
Rauner ran a good campaign in the primary and I keep hearing he’s a wonderful one on one campaigner.
But the campaign is not preparing him and overall the performance has been terrible.
Rauner can still win, but he’s got to clean house. His campaign manager must go.

I remember hearing GRyan speak about how he came to be an opponent of the death penalty. I think YDD’s statement is closer to what GRyan said in that speech.

I believe this whole thing is unfair. Rauner gave an appropriate response. This is just a very unseemly effort to associate him with a very ugly series of incidents in the NFL.

When someone trots that out, it usually means they just want to change the subject because the discussion is not going their way.

Guess what? Always lots of “substantive issues” out there that need to be addressed every single day, at home, at work, in the public square.
Who are these fictional characters that have the luxury of just focusing on the “The Big Issue,” as defined by you.

The Sun Times, WBEZ, Eric Zorn and many other media members and Democratic polticicians in this state openly associate with a longtime Chicago columnist who has a domestic battery conviction in his recent past. There was no outrage or loss of status for that person.
Now those same media are tripping on themselves trying throw this kind of mud at Rauner just because they ẽ think he flubbed an answer to a gotcha question. Very bizarro.

When his Crew had to, um, clarify, what Bruce meant, because Bruce Rauner can’t clarify it himself, it’s not a “think”…Bruce Rauner flubbed it.

A softball question that could have resulted in nice media exposure was “fumbled”

I am sickened at the alleged child abuse, and the video of an adult man, striking a woman, knocking her unconscious, you don’t need to be a father, a husband, or even own part of an NFL Franchise to be outraged, as I am”

It’s about someone standing at a podium and can’t be against domestic violence and child abuse when asked. That’s the rub.

Credibility is a precious thing, 3rd Generation Media, you shouldn’t squander it so casually.
“A longtime Chicago columnist who has a domestic battery conviction in his recent past.”
Nope. The domestic battery charges were dropped when prosecutors said the columnist had complied with a court-ordered alcohol treatment program.
“There was no outrage or loss of status for that person.”
Wrong again. Among other things, he was placed on leave from his job and removed from his paper’s editorial board.
If he were running for governor, that nine-year old incident would be relevant and the subject of much discussion.
But he’s not and it’s not.

One thing to keep in mind — he’s a minority owner, so he can talk without having to worry about action arising from it.
He can say things like “The leadership of this league needs to take a much stronger approach” and “we need to find out what Goodell knew and when he knew it” without worrying about it really impacting anything.
This wasn’t a “gottcha” question. He should have considered this to be a softball.

George was politically astute. He knew how to wait for an issue to come to him. And he had his response ready.
Bruce’s no comment shows he’s not a rookie but that he shouldn’t have made the cut in tryouts.

Appreciate it, Anonymous. Mea culpa for finding that particularly disturbing and hypocritical over the past 48 hours.
As for Rauner’s magic beans paying for the domestic violence shelters? They should be able to cover opening a new one in every county with the way he has been promising things. Don’t forget that they have to pay for magic tax cuts as well.

Point of Information, re George Ryan and death penalty:
1973– Illinois reinstituted the death penalty, PA 78-921 (HB 18.) State Rep. George Ryan voted yes, 4/10/73. The Illinois Supreme Court ruled the law unconstitutional in 1975.
1977– Illinois enacts a new death penalty law, PA 80-26 (HB 10.) State Rep. George Ryan voted yes, 3/10/77.
