Rate Quinn’s new ad: “Washington”

Tuesday, Sep 30, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* The governor sure has a lot of new TV ads playing these days. The Rauner folks say the abundance of new spots demonstrates that Quinn is worried and is hoping something will finally work.

Anyway, from a press release…

In a new TV ad released today, the Republican mayor of an Illinois town devastated by tornadoes last November praised Governor Pat Quinn’s leadership in response to the deadly disaster, saying, “He is the right guy for the job. He is the right guy for Illinois.”

Governor Quinn worked with Mayor Gary Manier to provide a disaster relief and aid package to help rebuild Washington, Ill., and other communities devastated by the massive tornadoes.

“I cannot say enough, the love for central Illinois that Governor Quinn has and the respect that we all have for him,” Mayor Manier said.

“When natural disasters occur, we come together for the common good,” Governor Quinn said.

* Rate it

* Script…

Mayor Gary Manier: “Gary Manier, I’m the Republican mayor for the city of Washington. 1,108 homes were devastated or destroyed.”

Governor Quinn: “When natural disasters occur, we come together for the common good.”

Mayor Manier: “I cannot say enough, the love for central Illinois that Governor Quinn has and the respect that we all have for him. State government under Pat Quinn’s leadership has helped us recover from this. I can’t imagine anyone else being in that seat during our devastation. He is the right guy for the job and the right guy for Illinois.”

* Whatever’s going on with the Quinn campaign, there’s little doubt that Simon Edelman, who produced both this spot and yesterday’s “Brookport” ad is most certainly hitting his stride. Longtime blog readers remember Simon’s stellar work producing online ads four years ago. He’s obviously made a successful leap to broadcast.

Way back, way back. You can put it on the board… YESSSS. Back to back home runs for Pat Quinn.

    Yeah, I’m convinced.

Well, of course Quinn is “worried.” So is Rauner. It is a very close election. Duh.

But in terms of rating it, I have to say it is his best so far. B+

  7. - Gooner - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:27 am:

A lot of ads are a sign of weakness?

Well, that sure explains the $1.5 million that Rauner dumped into the race again.

Jeez, didn’t they see that reply coming?
Has anybody over at Rauner’s team worked an election?

  8. - Former State Employee - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:28 am:

I saw the ad last night. It was short, sweet, and powerful.

  9. - Slow Down - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:28 am:

Any idea where the Quinn campaign is running this and the Brookport ad? I’m curious as to whether they see this as something useful only downstate or in the Chicago TV market as well.

  10. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:31 am:

    It’s an “A”.

I’m its simplicity, in both it’s message and the images, it cuts to the quick.

===* Whatever’s going on with the Quinn campaign, there’s little doubt that Simon Edelman, who produced both this spot and yesterday’s “Brookport” ad is most certainly hitting his stride. Yeah, he has made the leap and then some. Super-Impressed.

These two Ads, they are the downstate answer to “stop the bleeding”

People remember who helped them when they needed help most. Quinn was being Governor; he was responsive, he showed compassion, Quinn showed the levers of government working, and showed bi-partisanship gets things done git the greater good…

    …all in a :30 Ad.

Powerful, and well done. Kudos to Simon.

“The Rauner folks say the abundance of their own new spots demonstrates that Rauner is worried, and is hoping something will finally work to offset the negative Ads that seem to be hurting Bruce.”

    Better.

  11. - chi - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:31 am:

All these Republican mayors coming out for Quinn. Rauner must wish he was friends with some Democratic mayors;)

  12. - Frenchie Mendoza - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:32 am:

These are great, great ads. Rauner has nothing positive to match these. He’ll continue to hit and hammer negative stuff — but lacks anything — anything whatsoever — positive to say about his business experience.

Please. More ads like these. These are what voters want. Devastatingly effective.

  13. - Gooner - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:34 am:

In any case, I liked this one more than the similar one yesterday. A bit more detail and overall it gave the impression that Quinn did more.

One minor quibble — I didn’t like the shot of Quinn behind a microphone. Thought that made it seem more political. The talking to people shots were far better.

I give this one an A-.

One last note — Rauner’s made obvious efforts to go to Chicago for votes. Great to see Quinn play hard for votes in Central Illinois.

What’s not to like? Coupled with Brookport, real people on the ground say the dude came through and did his job well when they really needed help.

They’re the dream positive spots late in the game for persuadable indies.

–The Rauner folks say the abundance of new spots demonstrates that Quinn is worried and is hoping something will finally work.–

What’s the point of even saying that? Who is supposed to be persuaded of what for what purpose?

American flackdom continues on the steady march to Baghdad Bobism.

  17. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:40 am:

Living near the Washington area I can tell you that the governors presence at the time was powerful. Yes, that is his job and, for once, he did it well when people really needed it.

The ad is an easy A, positive- Quinn the governor, dignified. I just wish he would handle everyday that way. 3 out of 7 would be an improvement.

  18. - Frenchie Mendoza - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:41 am:

BTW — these also show a compassionate side of government. Hokey to talk about, I guess — but it’s something that packs a powerful persuasive punch, especially in times of need.

The idea that all we care about is taxes is crazy. People say that, and they’ll post that on blogs, but there’s more to government — all levels — than cuts and threats. Quinn recognizes this — and these ads certainly demonstrate it.

Rauner’s “compassion” is zero. A bottom-line guy who thinks he’s successful at everything he’s done — which is obviously false — demonstrate no capacity for compassion and understanding. Compassion also means having a social agenda — and standing by your social agenda. A “no social agenda” agenda is nonsense.

  19. - Belle - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:41 am:

I know some people in Washington and the Feds didn’t come thru but Quinn was there ASAP.
I’m gonna go with B+. It’s a believable spot plus I know it is correct.

  20. - Brookport Brandon - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:43 am:

I actually cried watching this one. Powerful.

  21. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:43 am:

I think it’s a great ad and rate it an A. The ad shows the best of the government and governor.

I haven’t been seeing too many Rauner ads on TV. It now looks to me that Quinn is dominating the TV media market in Chicagoland.

  22. - Nonplussed - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:43 am:

MrJM: They should show it during a Bear game. The storms that caused the tornadoes in Washington caused Soldier Field to be evacuated. I think it can be useful.

  24. - A guy... - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:46 am:

It’s a strong pass. No catastrophe is ever wasted in the political world. The incumbency has minuses, but like this, some strong plusses too.

  25. - Brookport Brandon - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:47 am:

If Government exists for any reason it is this. That mayor has been through the ringer and Quinn was there for him and his city when they needed help the most.

  26. - walker - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:47 am:

    Impressed with the combination.

  27. - hisgirlfriday - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:51 am:

    @Nonplussed

Funny you mention that. Was at the Bears season opener and they had a video clip about the Washington tornado (only pol I remember in it was Schock) and the efforts the Bears org put in to help with the rebuild.

As for the ad, I am guessing its more effective with people outside Washington than in it. It is true Quinn was on the scene when FEMA and the feds weren’t but I know some people affected by this that were frustrated when in the immediate aftermath they were shut out of their homes but Quinn got in. And that area is just so Republican I hope this doesn’t get Manier in trouble because it seems like he has done well in getting help for his town.

  28. - hisgirlfriday - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:54 am:

    @Grandson-of-Man:

It is my impression on central IL tv that Quinn has way more ads than Rauner too. Did he buy his time earlier to get a better rate or something like what happened in Obama vs. Mitt?

  29. - Streator Curmudgeon - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:57 am:

When he was Lt. Governor and attended the funerals of Illinois military personnel killed in action, Pat Quinn showed compassion. I don’t believe that was a stunt or had any political overtones.

In the case of Washington and Brookport, Quinn carried out his official duties but obviously showed compassion to the people he served. The people commenting in these ads are mature, savvy folks who’ve been around, and they became believers.

I give this spot an A.

  30. - Somewhere in il - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 9:59 am:

It is a solid positive ad. However, it’s not going to convert anyone. When was the last time Quinn was actually down state? Everyone knows how he truly feels about the rest of Illinois. This isn’t going to fool anyone. B for effort though.

time to bust out the camps funds and head west?

  33. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 10:01 am:

Once again, the Governor is finally using positive messages to sell himself. He needed to have done this since the Primary and spared us the stupidity of constantly reminding us that his opponent is wealthy.

This election was his reelection. It is about him. Finally someone seems to get it over there.

An incumbent cannot get a mandate running a negative campaign. While you can win running a smear campaign against your opponent, when an incumbent makes the election about the other guy - the incumbent looses an opportunity to use their reelection as a mandate to get something done.

Negative campaigning creates bad government, as a result. No one wins confidences of the voters with this approach and no one gets any credibility to govern. Negative campaigning has been partly to blame for the state of our situation in Illinois.

Negative campaigning gave us Rod Blagojevich instead of Judy Barr Topinka as governor in 2006. Negative campaigning is a the worse way to win a political contest.

If Pat Quinn wins reelection by smearing Bruce Rauner - Pat Quinn gets nothing by winning except a vitriolic, cynical state who doesn’t respect him.

If he turns this around, and wins this election by making his administration and governance the focus on Election Day - he can really be a winner.

We really need a winner on Election Day to help us out of our governmental disasters.

Keep up broadcasting these kinds of ads, please!

    Somewhere in IL,

While your opinion is interesting, two downstate mayors and one downstate GOP chair feel differently, so it may well convert some votes.

==Everyone knows how he truly feels about the rest of Illinois==

How does he truly feel about the rest of Illinois? I’m assuming you believe he has some disdain for it? Why? Because he doesn’t show up in your neck of the woods often enough? Grow up.

  37. - Mighty M. Mouse - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 10:37 am:

===–The Rauner folks say the abundance of new spots demonstrates that Quinn is worried and is hoping something will finally work.–

What’s the point of even saying that? Who is supposed to be persuaded of what for what purpose?===

I think what the Rauner campaign is doing is a form of projection.

What makes sense to me is that the Rauner campaign is worried sick and is hoping that something– anything — will work, but they’ve pretty much spent all their ammunition so now they have nothing new to say and they’re pretty much reduced to constantly repeating their largely baseless accusations and projecting their own nasty ideas by attributing them to Quinn.

By contrast, Quinn’s campaign has a virtually endless supply of new ammo with each successive ad more powerful than the last courtesy of GTCRauner’s dubious business practices, and they’ve been planning to expose them seriatim months ahead of time, the same way professionals plan a 4th of July fireworks show far in advance.

So this has become the SOP for the Rauner campaign. Whatever concerns THEM they SAY worries Quinn; whatever inappropriate behavior THEY would do if they could they instead accuse Quinn of doing.

It’s a simple and easy to execute tactic that’s a perfect match for their simple, but extraordinarily deceitful, campaign.

blub. think this ad works in the metro chicago market too to burnish the image of PQ.

  40. - Responsa - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 10:40 am:

This is a much better, more honest and solid ad than the Brookport one. This one acknowledges that it was “state government under Pat Quinn’s leadership” that helped their recovery– as opposed to the other ad which made PQ out to be an unrecognizable combination of king, mighty mouse, and superman who singularly and mysteriously “saved” Brookport.

    A.

  41. - Almost the Weekend - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 10:48 am:

If only Bruce Rauner was a successful businessman and could run an ad similar to this to show off his private sector experience.

Quinn has excellent negative and positive ads. I’d be interested to see how his numbers have moved since July. Only wildcard is how the anti-violence initiative plays out.

  42. - Somewhere in il - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 10:53 am:

Now how about southern Illinois….we have asked Gov. Quinn thousands of times to visit Murray Center, look our residents and parents in the eye and tell them why he is throwing them out of their home….he has NEVER visited us, even though he drove right past their home several times.
    Don’t talk about Pat Quinn’s compassion…we haven’t seen it.l

Brought a tear to my eye. Still waiting for Rauner to run his ad about what a great bidnessman he is. An waiting for his release of “Built to Last, (the Rauner way”).

Is the Gov leaning on downstate mayors for a little payback? Does disaster relief now come with strings attached? I’ll help your community, if you help me.

Quinn’s done a good job of doing what a governor is supposed to do in a disaster, but nothing special. He only looks great when compared to his running mate’s earlier inability to even do flyovers during a disaster. (No, I’m not referring to Sheila, but the top of the previous tickets).

Propaganda ! At expense of a tragic event. Any governor would have provided assistance. Quinn is such a FRAUD.

  59. - Just the Way It Is One - Tuesday, Sep 30, 14 @ 11:27 pm:

Pow! If anything, this Ad will help Pat Quinn among some Independents and Downstaters–and he does need a decent % of these Folks, particularly the former, to pull this thing out. The Message is clear–hate him or not, Pat Quinn is a decent Man with a Big Heart who will do whatEVer he can to help folks out ANYwhere in our Beloved Home State when devastation and tragedly strike in situations like Washington’ Tornado Disaster–over the last few years, it’s hardly the ONLY town or village he’s shot off ASAP to, just, if ANYthing, to BE there with the Residents in a state of shock and emotional trauma when these tragedies have stricken our Brother and Sister Illinoisans, and then provides as much Aid/Assistance as his Position CAN provide them.

Deny it if you want, but that’s true Compassion at work–that IS Leadership of EVERYone who is suffering then–and, by God, obviously in service of the PEOPLE, and not just Democrats or personal friends or family…!
