8:30-9:30 precinct reports

Tuesday, Nov 4, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Let’s start a fresh thread. Please make sure you say where your precinct is. Give us the weather, the turnout, the “feel” of the place, as well as the number and effectiveness of the precinct workers. Thanks!

…8:59 am… Springfield weather

Sangamon County Clerk Joe Aiello said he’s sticking with his projection of a 56 percent voter turnout today despite inclement weather he suspects is having an effect on early voting. […]

He said he had been at several east side polling places early today and that turnout was “slow” — less than 10 percent — in those precincts.

“The rain is probably keeping some people away,” he said.

But with showers expected to end by early this afternoon, voting should pick up, he said.

…9:06 am… AccuWeather radar screen cap at 9:05

…9:08 am… Bruce Rauner votes

…9:16 am… Sun-Times

At a polling station in the Uptown neighborhood, several voters said this campaign season’s unusually negative rhetoric didn’t deter them from voting.

“Hey, I’ve got fast forward on my commercials and DVR,” said Janis Tiffin, 67, a retired architect. “I don’t watch any of that.”

Craig Shaw, 30, said he felt like he didn’t have an excuse not to vote — since he lives just down the street from the polling station. […]

Caitlin Binder-Markey, 29, a teacher, said her motivation to come out to vote include fears about losing her pension and protecting her right to birth control.

I’m gonna have a ScribbleLive feed for our next round of precinct reports.

Gary Forby told me this morning he recorded a robo call for Quinn to refute the Rauner robo call that used his voice… Anyone heard it?

  2. - Nearly Normal - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:40 am:

Normal precincts 20 & 24 –turnout moderate. Was busy from 6 to 8 but now slow. Weather chilly, windy, and misting. No problems with equipment. Lots of undervoting and write ins.

  3. - Badabing - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:41 am:

Eastern Madison County. GOP turf. Rauner and Karmeier signs everywhere. No sign of Democrats. Rain. Steady flow of voters. Polling place just plugging along.

  4. - mjrothjr - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:42 am:

Downers Grove, Longfellow Administrative Center polling station. Overcast. I was paper voter 180 at 7:20 a.m. All 6 paper ballot stations and the electronic voting station were full when I voted, with more people waiting in line. Very few yard signs up - the only ones there were all for R candidates. Probably 6 or 7 precinct workers in total, no complaints on effectiveness.

    It. Is. Slooooooow.

You can really feel the impact of the early voting.

Albany Park Chicago. Average turnout so far. Mixed precinct but mostly young and middle aged white voters so far. Cloudy but no rain - shouldn’t discourage voting. No passion one way or another around here. One bored passer, probably ineffective. ;-) Judges guessing 25% turnout.

  7. - Joe Bidenopolous - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:44 am:

North side of chicago, only guy working at 6:30 was collecting signatures for city petitions. But I was 42 and there were lines, which is pretty good for the precinct.

I came home last night to a flyer from the regular dem organization reminding me to vote. It had the wrong polling place on it. I hope it was a dirty trick but fear it was run of the mill incompetence.

  8. - hp - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:44 am:

POTUS of the United States’ polling place. Rain threatening. Only 5 voters in there, no line no waiting. No campaign signs or volunteers out front. One angry lady asking them to call downtown because she was at the wrong precinct and they told her she could cast a provisional ballot but it wouldn’t count.

  9. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:47 am:

Cincinnati township in Pekin(central illinois) a bit rainy, overcast, probably 10 other voters there at the same time

  10. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:48 am:

No Rauner signs outside polling places on the far Northwest side of Chicago (Russ Stewart territory).

Come to think of it, if he was serious about getting 20% of the city, he would have done one event here (GOP prez candidates do mid-40s up here). But instead he focused totally on the South side. Like it’s been said, if he wins, it’ll be despite himself.

  11. - Been There - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:49 am:

The grumpy tea bagger here in Oak Lawn / worth Twnshp is doing a pretty good job selling getting rid of the 2% tax and against SB 16. I counter that my candidate has ready voted against SB16. But the tax bit is resonating with some people.

This video of Diana Rauner at the gotv rally last night really says it all. http://youtu.be/KkGUfu0nUrA

  14. - LBJ - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:51 am:

Good, steady turnout in Englewood. Voters are motivated.

  15. - 19th Ward - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:52 am:

William Kelly please none of your self centered garbage today. We are reporting turnout , locations and other interesting news from polls. So please today go to a poll and report or just disappear

  16. - anon - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:53 am:

Billy Kelly, please go away. Really.

  17. - Nilwood - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:56 am:

Larger than expected turnout. They were setting up more paper ballot booths as I arrived. Only signs in the area were R’s. No pole watchers were present, and everyone who voted while I was there undervoted.

  18. - Niles Township - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:56 am:

Niles Township, inmy precinct light turn-out so far. One electronic machine out of service, techs on the way.

  19. - Amalia - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:56 am:

soccermom from the previous thread at 7:46 am
(Dear heaven, if I never see Diana Rauner’s pink sweater again….)

oh how I wish soccermom had started a twitter feed…Diana Rauner’s pink sweater!

  20. - Not it - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:56 am:

My polling place on Chicago’s north lakefront was swarming with municipal candidates trying to get signatures. Since they’re not campaigning for this election they can go past the boundary. They’re really pushy and rude.

  21. - Eli - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:57 am:

Number 128 in Andersonville (Chicago). Two poll workers in my precinct (three precincts at the polling place), a very short line (2-3 people). Gathering signatures out front for Chuy Garcia and an elected school board petition.

  22. - Jibba - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 8:59 am:

CHAMPAIGN 20 was busy at 830. All 6 booths full but no line. I was paper ballot 117. No poll watchers, plenty of efficient judges. Half the voters of 2014 at the same time. Rainy.

  23. - TomSkillingMustBeAnR - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:00 am:

Looks like a long line of rain covering every inch of Manar/Sherer & Ammons districts. Spfld supposed to stop this am.

  24. - LS Voter - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:01 am:

Not too busy, but decent turnout at 7 am at St. Mathias.

One interesting note was that none of the amendments or referendums were on the paper ballot. I wouldn’t have even noticed, but another voter was asking about it. None of the judges seemed to know the answer.

I had to get to work so I did not stick around to see how it was resolved. Have to imagine there was a second page to the ballot or something that was missing.

  25. - 21st State - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:03 am:

downtown Chicago had ~10 waiting at each of my locations @6a but otherwise morning rush is over — looking fwd to 230p #s to see how many are waiting until after work/

  26. - RoPo Ranger - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:03 am:

Some problems with election judges not showing up in a couple 48th Ward precincts. Might have something to do with those robocalls.

  27. - muon - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:05 am:

In western Winfield Township DuPage it seemed as busy as a presidential election. The judges reported a line at 6:00 which is unusual. Bottom ine: the four precincts had 200 votes cast out of 2600 registered at 8:40.

  28. - Quiet Sage - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:10 am:

West side of Springfield. Moderate to heavy turnout. Light rain.

  29. - ThatGirl - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:14 am:

Long lines here - with a sense of camaraderie and spirit of togetherness - all of us wanting change - all of us ready to cast our vote to dump the insiders. Today is OUR day - today is a new beginning. Today we enter the Rauner era.

  30. - Leatherneck - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:15 am:

Number 89 at my polling place in Springfield before 7:30 this morning (Westminster Presbyterian Church west of the Capitol complex). Also a sighting of Springfield Ward 5 alderman Sam Cahnman in the parking lot, possibly doing exit polling.

  31. - Precinct Captain - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:20 am:

Where did Rauner vote? Winnetka, Chicago, New York City, Montana?

  32. - PolPal56 - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:21 am:

    RI County

I voted early, but as I drove past my precinct at about 8:30, it appeared to be very busy. Not a surprise - my precinct historically votes over 50% in these elections (and over 70% in presidentials). There were all Dem signs outside.

There is a polling place in the building where I work. Since I arrived, there’s been a steady stream of voters. No waiting, though. Two poll watchers. Signs across the street, all Rep. No passers.

The weather is heavily overcast but mild, so shouldn’t impact voting.

  33. - anon - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:21 am:

Protecting her right to birth control—-what does that mean?????

  34. - Original Rambler - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:26 am:

Albany Park. 100 voters out of 900+ in precinct. Ahead of primary rate.

  35. - The Old Professor - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:26 am:

Urbana Main Library, faculty section of town. Steady light rain. I was voter 90 out of 540+ in precinct. No line when I got there at 8:50; line when I left. This was said to be a “pretty good” turnout and, historically, lots of people vote early. Obama beat Romney here 411-55 in 2012.

  36. - Bunson8r - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:27 am:

Voted in Uptown around 7:45. Light crowd, I was # 20 to vote. Very friendly staff.

  37. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:27 am:

OK, I finally voted at 9am. I can’t give my precinct number but I’m on the eastern half of 47, in Greg Harris’ district. I was voter 103, which means about 20 percent have voted so far this morning, not including early votes, which were popular in my neck of the woods given the long lines at the early voting site.

IIRC, my precinct isn’t down much vs 2012 so far. If the weather cooperates, we could get close to that level of turnout here, which should be good news for Quinn.

  38. - RNUG - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:30 am:

Springfield Capitol 68 & 71, Woodside 12, about 8:30 AM, light rain. All close parkign in use, all booths in use with a handful of people waiting. Forgot to check on number, spoke to a friend / election judge who described the turnout as moderate. At least one person was tracking every voter on an iPad; assuming they were doing so for one of the GOTV efforts.

  39. - lil enchilada - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:30 am:

Voted in Rock Island County at 8. Quite a bit busier than normal. Usually I am the lone voter at that time of day or there might be one other voter. This morning there were 7 others voting. Went smoothly, no problems.

  40. - lil enchilada - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:32 am:

Forgot to mention it is 47 degrees and a little overcast. Almost 200 voters at that time.

  41. - Whatever - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:32 am:

There’s the Carhartt jacket again! I think everyone’s ready for that to be retired.

  42. - abanana - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:34 am:

Near west side Springfield — I was voter 305 — much higher than normal

  43. - Pius - Tuesday, Nov 4, 14 @ 9:35 am:

Just voted at a Champaign polling place for 2 precincts-I was #175. Just came from UI-UC combined polling place–only 3 voters as of 9 AM!
