* Almost every year that a governor has given a State of the State address before giving the budget address, we get goofy stories like this…
Gov. Bruce Rauner is set to deliver his first State of the State Address on Wednesday, and most area lawmakers are hoping he addresses the state’s fiscal problems.
The budget address will happen later this month, as Rep. Moffitt rightly points out…
State Rep. Don Moffitt, R-Gilson, said he too hopes to see a “roadmap” for the state’s fiscal future, though Wednesday’s speech might not be the platform to do it.
“I hope he will outline his roadmap,” Moffitt said. “First, where he wants to get to. Second, how he wants to get there. Although the ‘how to get there’ might be in the budget address on Feb. 18.”
The governor will likely talk about some general principles in the SOTS address, but specifics will most likely have to wait until the 18th.

I think we’ve already heard the SOS with slides. I’m not expecting anything new.

Wonder if they will hang his “Illinois Is Back” banner from the balcony behind him — as he continues his campaign talking points about how Illinois is going down the tubes.

He will proclaim he found the men’s room. Finally.

Bruce Rauner needs to avoid making any news. He needs to be boring. He needs to talk like an accountant. Bruce Rauner needs to get over himself and talk like he has been governor for a long time and needs the General Assembly to partner with him on the problems Illinois faces.
His “shaking us Springfield” campaign performance needs to end. It is ridiculously shallow and unproductive.
Be a governor, Governor.

whats the over/under this is just an extension of the campaign and it is just another stump speech??

==it is just another stump speech==
I’ve never heard a State of the State speech by anybody that isn’t a stump-type speech.

I agree with Moffitt.
He might as well put out a framework for the budget.
We will get hammered by the press if he doesn’t, so tell us what your principles are.
Do we need to “live with in our means” or are we going to “grow our way out,” or “make wise investments”.
If there are cuts to be made, what is off the table?

So this is more of “defining the goals for the plan.”

The state of the state speech will be even more devoid of specifics than usual. Bruce is still learning the ropes, like how to hide your staff on the payrolls of other agencies.

I’m sure most lawmakers are hoping Rauner addresses the state’s fiscal problems, but none of them realistically expect him to do so. Many state residents who pay attention to politics have been hoping Rauner would propise realistic and attainable solutions to the state’s budget mess since the primary.
