Maze Jackson mailer blasts “Irish bosses”

Saturday, Feb 27, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

[UPDATE: Comments are now open on this post.]

* Rep. Ken Dunkin’s ally Maze Jackson has a new political action committee called Citizens for Democratic Accountability. Jackson appears regularly on WVON. He’s also the Chicago Defender’s political editor. And Jackson’s new PAC has a new and quite unique mailer…

Whew.

How would Maze react to a flyer referencing the African American legislator? Yea, I know exactly what he would do. Maze is a bigot.

  2. - Keyrock - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 9:06 am:

    “Progressive”? “For the taxpayer”?
Amazing what the First Amendment protects, isn’t it?

  3. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 9:07 am:

    “Irish political bosses”

Welp, when you can’t explain away ignoring restraining orders and you are the 3-time winner and now President of the Century Club… what more can you do?

Flip a quote from a sitting President of the United States, who publicly embarrassed you?

    Nah… Never happen…

Sounds like desperation leaking out on to the floor to me.

  6. - Downstate - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 9:13 am:

An anti-leprechaun image with the primary occurring 2 days before St. Patrick’s Day is an interesting choice.

  7. - Anon221 - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 9:23 am:

Race/ethnic baiting- real classy, Maze. Keep digging the divide. So, Maze, do you consider Obama one of the Irish bosses, too? Seems like there was a lot of spin using his comments to Dunkin’s “machine”.

We all, as members of the human race, have much more in common than not. Someday, maybe we’ll realize our true potentials. But not with divisions like this flyer.

  9. - wordslinger - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 9:28 am:

    “No Irish,” huh?

    How nostalgic.

Isn’t it refreshing when someone who claims to be fighting bigotry against one group can employ it against another.

It will be interesting to see who’s bankrolling Citizens for Democratic Accountability. The D-1 was filed last Friday claiming they had no money. Yet here’s a mailer already.

I wonder what Gov. Rauner thinks of the “No Irish” tactic in support of his legislative leader?

  10. - Rabid - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 9:30 am:

“strangling progress in Illinois” with a phone cord?

  11. - Hammer - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 9:30 am:

^^Good point Downstate. I also empathize with Kari Steele. I can’t imagine she’ll find any support when she tries to move up from MWRD

  12. - tmfbitu - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 9:38 am:

Really, the only thing missing from this circus was a good leprechaun persecution . . . though I rather doubt Dunkin would be enemies with any dapper character cradling a pot of gold.

  13. - AlabamaShake - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 9:38 am:

I too was wondering who was funding Maze’s PAC. No money has been reported. But money is being spent.

  14. - Michael Westen - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 9:40 am:

So Maze is willing to trade an Irish Democratic boss for a German Republican one. On the bright side, maybe Maze is color blind after all.

  15. - Henry Francis - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 10:04 am:

    Maze needs a Sharock Shake.

  16. - Grandson of Man - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 10:09 am:

I’m not at all surprised about this bigotry coming from the people who think it’s good for African-Americans to have union rights and standard of living weakened in exchange for jobs, so that the corporate elite can profit even more.

  17. - Soccermom - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 10:12 am:

Does this mean that Maze gets the lucky charms? (They ARE magically delicious…)

  18. - James Knell - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 10:43 am:

Oh my, now they’ve insulted the wee people. Like Rauner they have pots o’ gold, you know. That should even up the spending. Remember, the CTA Green Line runs through the district. Combined with St. Patrick’s Day on 2 days before the primary and there are some bad omens for Mr. Dunkin.

  19. - GA Watcher - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 10:58 am:

Guess they didn’t proof the mailer before it went out: “Vote March 15, 2015…”

  20. - Anon221 - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 11:03 am:

    Excellent catch, GA!!

  22. - Payback - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 11:33 am:

Jackson may be in poor taste, but is he wrong on the historical demographics? Chicago had an Irish Mayor Daley for how long? Through most of the 1960s, 1970s & 1980s Chicago had an Irish Mayor, and Irish Cook Co. State’s Attorney, an Irish Sheriff, and a heavily Irish C.P.D. and Sheriff’s police.

I stopped in the federal courtroom downtown when U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald’s office was trying former C.P.D. detective Jon Burge , and heard testimony from a black man who was suffocated with a typewriter dust cover until he signed a false confession, then was placed on death row. Several of Burge’s old detectives from the “midnight crew” at Grand & Central were testifying, and most were Irish. What’s left of that culture is part of the culture of cover-up we see today with police shootings, and the black community is aware of the history.

Maze is reporting that all the money came from him personally. http://elections.il.gov/CampaignDisclosure/CDPdfViewer.aspx?FiledDocID=602386&DocType=Image

“Anita Alvarez” and “Rahm Emanuel” are curious names for Irish kids.

“Through most of the 1960s, 1970s & 1980s Chicago had an Irish Mayor, and Irish Cook Co. State’s Attorney, an Irish Sheriff, and a heavily Irish C.P.D. and Sheriff’s police.”

But those days are gone. Now anybody can become a bad cop if they can pass the test. Madigan began his career in the 1980s and he’s 73. So perhaps voters over 60 might understand this. Those under 50 will think he doesn’t like St. Patrick’s Day or something.

  26. - Anon - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 12:11 pm:

The most Irish of Irish political bosses is, by definition, Ireland’s Taoiseach - that country’s prime minister. The current Taoiseach is Enda Kenny, who was appointed in 2011 and just reelected over the weekend.

    Enda.
    Kenny.

    Coincidence?

  27. - Anon - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 12:13 pm:

In an interview after winning on Saturday, the Taoiseach Kenny had an observation the 5th District Kenny might want to heed as a warning: “Democracy is always exciting, but it is merciless when it kicks in.”

  28. - Dee Lay - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 12:37 pm:

Imagine the uproar if an editor at one of the other papers in the metro-Chicago area ran a Super-PAC for a candidate in your coverage area?

Chicago Defender should terminate Maze immediately.

  29. - JS Mill - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 1:48 pm:

    =Through most of the 1960s, 1970s & 1980s Chicago=

You may want to check your numbers there chief. For the majority of the 80’s the mayor was African-American. 1983-1989 Harold Washington and Eugene Sawyer.

  30. - btowntruth - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 2:15 pm:

“Irish guys controlling Springfield for the last 30 years”?

Who knew Emil Jones was Irish?

  31. - bustill - Monday, Feb 29, 16 @ 2:15 pm:

You guys provide a great laugh. Reading your comments could make the unaware think that Maze Jackson invented the Irish political bosses moniker.

  32. - Bleh - Friday, Mar 18, 16 @ 12:00 pm:

If there’s anything we’ve learned (although we already knew) is that Maze (like Ken Dunkin) only stand up for themselves. They’re not community folk, if they are, they have not shown it.
Unless Maze still subscribes to antiquated race theories of the 60s & 70s that have been debunked by most recent critical race theorists (particularly led by women of color).

It’s unfortunate though, that Maze has no framework to stand behind, to support his perspective, besides his ego - which, as we saw this week, won’t take him far.
