Is Scott Lee Cohen coming back?

Friday, May 13, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Scott Lee Cohen, who won a Democratic primary for lt. governor in 2010 and then backed out when unsavory stuff surfaced about his background, told Avy Meyers recently that he was seriously considering yet another run

“There is gonna be a time, very soon, that I am gonna run again. My biggest obstacle in making the decision was my wife. And she’s warming up to the idea. She told me, she said, ‘There’s gotta be two things, I want two things: Number one is, you can’t finance your own campaign… she’s 100 percent right.. I did it and told her I would never do it again. But more importantly, you know what she says to me? She says ‘Scott, I don’t want you to run unless you have a plan on how to fix whatever it is you want to fix.’ Does that make sense? You have people who run just to run. You have people who run because they’re arrogant. And they have no plan.”

File this under: #ThingsCanAlwaysGetWorse

But if he’s not financing his own campaign, you gotta wonder who would kick in that kind of dough for him. So, maybe we’re safe after all.

* Toward the end of the interview, Cohen gave out his AOL e-mail address and said

“There’s a bunch of intelligent people that watch this show, they’re smart people. I wanna ask if there’s anybody that has a plan or an idea. How to fix the budget. How to bring revenue in creatively. Um, how to fix the pension problem that we have. I’m not saying ‘Fire this person, fire that person.’ That’s all bull—t. I want somebody that has a real idea, a real plan. Contact me. And I’d love to hear what they have to say.”

So, basically, he still has no ideas of his own.

* And his conclusion

“By the way, you know, if I’m ever blessed to be elected, I’m gonna be here all the time talking on your show.”

Anyway, a fun little Friday diversion for your enjoyment.

Add Cohen to the list of people I would rather have as governor.

  2. - Northsider - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 11:06 am:

Scott, how can we miss you if you won’t go away?

  3. - Mama - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 11:11 am:

I think he should back out and let his smart wife run for office.

  4. - Ron Burgundy - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 11:13 am:

Anyone with real ideas and plans should run themselves and cut out this middle man who clearly still doesn’t have an original thought of his own.

  5. - The Captain - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 11:15 am:

He should team up with the other guy William Kelly, they should run as a ticket. We could use the levity.

  6. - MikeMacD - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 11:16 am:

Mr. Cohen’s perception of reality seems to be superior to that of our current Governor.

  7. - The Captain - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 11:17 am:

In fairness, while Scott Lee Cohen was then and is now a vanity candidate at least last time he ran his gimmick was hosting job fairs in underserved areas. Of all the vanity candidates we’ve had to endure that was probably the one with the most benefit to people in need.

anybody will be better than rauner

  9. - Tone - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 11:22 am:

Lol, this guy is almost as bad as Trump.

  10. - downstate commissioner - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 11:25 am:

ever hear the comment “Anybody is better than Quinn?” How about “Anybody is better than Rauner?” Kind of forgot all of the details about Cohen, but don’t recall him sounding as bad as Trump.

The pension fix is not unduly complex to fix, it is just unpalatable to do so. First, stop focusing on figuring out different unconstitutional ways to welsh on the pensions. Second, recognize that going forward, Tier 2 does fix the problem (and other options would actually be more costly, ranging from more costly than Tier 2 to more costly than the current problem). Third, figure out how to deal with the past underfunding (there’s the unpalatable part, and where the real problem lies).

Great minds think the same way, I guess…

Anyone who still uses an aol e mail address is, by definition, incapable of an original thought. Or any thoughts.

Concerned - that’s what she said!

  15. - atsuishin - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 11:48 am:

i actually always like him. He might not have been the smartest tool in the box but he was honest and straight forward.

  16. - Cassiopeia - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 12:04 pm:

Maybe he can get Quinn to run as his Lt. Gov

I thought because we were in the basement it was impossible to go lower but I stand corrected.

  18. - Oswego Willy - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 12:14 pm:

I’m going to respond in two parts.

I whole-heartedly welcome, encourage, endorse, promote… any chance Scott Lee Cohen to run for office.

    Remember, that’s run and campaign.

I do not think electing Scott Lee Cohen in any way shape or form to any elected office in Illinois, local or otherwise, is in anyone’s best interest, including Scott Lee Cohen’s

    But…

Please, for the love of all that is holy in political satire…

Run Scott Run… just not with sharp objects.

    (Geez, please run!)

You’d think the wealthy would be happy enjoying their moola and yet, some of them prefer to imagine they can do anything.Their egos helped them get their money and they assume it can take them anywhere.
As long as we’re mentioning those who might be better than the current Gov, they always say that Boarder Collies are very bright…

  20. - Langhorne - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 12:19 pm:

    If rauner can get elected….
If rauner can destroy and starve….
    If trump….

Why not scotty? Beam me up.

  21. - Qui Tam - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 12:24 pm:

I’d rather see Marty Cohen run and take on the corporate Dems.

  22. - Michelle Flaherty - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 12:27 pm:

    Cohen/Dunkin 2018

  23. - A guy - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 12:52 pm:

    ===Cohen/Dunkin 2018===

    At least you’ve found a funding source…/s

He’s the ideal Trump running mate.

  25. - Levois - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 1:15 pm:

I hardly missed Scott Lee Cohen why does he want to come back into public eye now. It couldn’t hurt though assuming everyone else chooses to forget his former reputation.

  26. - Ahoy! - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 1:59 pm:

I heard Trump was looking into Cohen for the VP selection.

I’m sure he didn’t mean to include you in that Rich.

  28. - wordslinger - Friday, May 13, 16 @ 2:41 pm:

What did Madigan say to him to get him to drop out? He won, fair and square.

By the way, for those who have followed the career of the all-controlling chess master/ dictator, Cohen was the second goofball nominated for l.g. when Madigan was running the show.
