* From July of 2008

* Another way [Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich] has been trying to hurt House Democratic chances this November is by claiming there’s a “secret” plan to raise income taxes after the election…

    An after-Halloween trick could be up Mike Madigan’s sleeve. Governor Blagojevich is suggesting the speaker of the Illinois House is secretly pushing for an increase in the income tax, sales tax, or both after the November election.

There’s a gigantic difference now, however. Blagojevich didn’t spend millions of dollars attempting to burn that message in because he was preoccupied with his own reelection [duh - he wasn’t up that year] and nobody in the Democratic Party would give him that kind of money to do something like that.

Also, Madigan just wasn’t as well-known (or as widely disliked) back then as he is today.

    I thought it was Rauner who had the secret plan to raise taxes. Is that everybody’s secret plan?

  2. - BIG R. Ph. - Friday, Jun 3, 16 @ 3:08 pm:

    But the one constant for raising taxes is….Speaker Madigan.

  3. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Jun 3, 16 @ 3:10 pm:

    I just think it’s fun, the Rauner-Blagojevich comparisons…

    That’s why I am where I am.

    Sorry.

    That was back when we needed Mike Madigan to be the Chief of Police to keep Rod from stealing everything that wasn’t nailed down. Now we need him to be the Fire Chief to keep Rauner from burning down the state.

    It was 2008. He was not up for re-election.

  6. - anon - Friday, Jun 3, 16 @ 3:33 pm:

    Madigan ensured the hike to 5% was temporary. Then he ensured the temporary hike was not extended, despite widespread predictions to the contrary. Consequently, Illinois has one of the lowest income tax rates among the 41 states with an income tax. Of course those facts don’t fit with the GOP narrative.

    When I imagine compromise, I imagine a billionaire governor running a multimillion dollar negative advertising campaign.

    Ohh, this is a fun game. The Cardinals won pennants in ‘82, ‘87, ‘04, and ‘06. The one constant? Madigan.

    A president was elected from the Bush family in ‘88 and ‘00. The one constant? Madigan.

    A Chick-Fil-A was in the Springfield mall in the late 80’s and one reopend in 2016. The one constant? Madigan.

    Mr Gross Receipt’s Tax thought someone else had a secret plan to raise taxes? Thank goodness we now have someone that will only raise taxes after the lower 99% takes a pay cut. My hero.

  10. - It's Official - Friday, Jun 3, 16 @ 3:53 pm:

    Born and raised a D. I am now throwing in the towel. I will support the R party. Not because I support Rauner. My extreme dislike of the Madagin family……that’s right…..Madagin family pretty much sums it up. If it wasn’t for my family I would move out of Illinois. This place and the people in it are nothing more than a selfish fiasco. Oh, and by the way, I will not vote for any, repeat any, incumbents. You have no one to blame but yourself! Are you proud now??

    “by claiming there’s a “secret” plan to raise income taxes after the election…”

    To be fair, he didn’t say which election. Maybe he was referring to 2010. Maybe he was referring to 2016. Maybe he was referring to 2048. …

    ===Are you proud now??===

    Is that you Kristen?

  13. - Skeptic - Friday, Jun 3, 16 @ 4:30 pm:

    In 2008 Blago tried to burn the message that he was being impeached to get him out of the way of a tax increase, because he (Blago) was the only person in the way of making that happen.

  14. - WhoKnew - Friday, Jun 3, 16 @ 4:41 pm:

    I thought Blago’s thing was the Value Added Tax?
    Remember when he was glad it fail!
