I grew up in a farming community in South Dakota. I was raised to speak plainly, work hard for what you want and respect others who do the same.
My name is Jeanne Ives. I’m running against Bruce Rauner for the Republican nomination for governor because Rauner deserted the conservative families like mine, who elected him.
I will not lie, cheat or steal, or tolerate others who do.
There must be a reckoning for Rauner’s betrayal. Join me and get the revolution you were promised.
I don’t think the premise of her promise (”I will out-conservative Rauner”) works for Illinois. Rauner wasn’t elected on the same platform Ives is running on.
That said, the ad itself is fine. I just don’t think her ideals resonate with most voters.
I thought there were rules/guidelines in place when it came to showing military uniforms in campaign ads? Does someone with more knowledge than me know if that is true or did I just make it up in my head? Also, if it is true does this ad clear those rules?
Count all of the people who are picture in this ad (including the group shots of the soccer teams.) Then count all of the people of color who appear in the ad. (I’ll help you: One.)
Why mention South Dakota? Just say you were raised in a farming community and you graduated from West Point. Yes, she has visuals, but why not say it as opposed to mentioning a different state?
And “revolution”??? Why not “lower taxes”?
C- production values. Talk about a “farming community” and you’re sitting on a couch in the living room?
Veterans who are no longer active members of the military don’t need to worry about including this disclaimer on their campaign materials if they include an old picture of themselves in uniform. You shouldn’t, however, try to design commercials, fliers, brochures or advertisements in a way that is intended to trick voters into thinking that you’re still an active member of the United States military.
Anonyomous that’s a free one but the Google works wonders.

Members of the Armed Forces may not wear the
uniform during or in connection with furthering
political activity or when an inference of official
sponsorship for the activity may be drawn.

Jeanie Ives is a civilian, so she can use her military uniform like a cheap theater prop if she so chooses.
Ives comes off as very much believing in what she says. I give her credit for that. I doubt she will be one to try and lie to hide who she really is.
And that is why she doesn’t have much of a chance, her true self, does not mesh with Illinois. Obviously she has a following, but it isn’t going to be nearly enough.
- Dance Band on the Titanic - Friday, Feb 2, 18 @ 2:52 pm:
Considering that Ives’ main impediment at this point is lack of awareness of her as an alternative to Rauner in the primary, the ad works. The voters she is trying to appeal to in the primary will likely respond to her simple, straightforward approach. The low end production values don’t hurt in my estimation. Knowing her audience, I give it a B.
The question is will she have enough dough to run it often enough to burn it in, especially in the suburbs and downstate?
Sorry to disagree with most of my friends here but that’s a bad ad. With grade inflation maybe it’s a C. The production values are weak. The messaging is muddled. The visuals are ok, but cheap (just pics and no video?). I can’t stand her but hope she does better against Rauner.
Wheaton appears to be nearly 90% Caucasian, I don’t think she had any control on how many people of color play soccer in Wheaton. Seeing that most of the other people in the ad are family I guess they would probably be as Caucasian as she is. Seems like someone being pretty petty.
“Jeanie Ives is a civilian, so she can use her military uniform like a cheap theater prop if she so chooses.” - Service to her Country is something she has a right to be proud of and is used by many running for political office on both sides of the aisle.
MrJM - Cheap theater prop - Paul Schimpf prosecuted Sadam Hussein, Stephanie Kifowit Marine, Mike Hastings multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan…… shall I keep going?
Your past defines your present and your future, Ives is a graduate of West Point, an incredibly honorable and difficult achievement.
Military service proves a willingness to sign a piece of paper and put your life on the line for your country, for the freedom of others. Betting not many members of the GA would do that today much less when they were an 18 year old kid.
Do better.
This ad should have been focused on her (i.e. mention GA service), then do a full ad about Rauner - I don’t know that most Republicans voters know what she means when she says betrayal.
Then again, maybe Rauner wants her to attack him explicitly for signing HB40 because then it tells moderates who will vote in November that he signed it
The take away: We’re clean faced white people with good dental work. Vote for us.

I’ll give it a solid B. It allow her to introduce herself. I would have liked to see her on the farm…a bit more of her military career and maybe not so much of “Bruce Rauner lied…”
But, for the budget and time she had, it’s pretty solid.
My kids are too old to be in those pictures, but
I am deeply offended that she would use the St Michael’s Lancers as a backdrop. Anyone check
to see if there are photo releases from each and every one of those children and their families?

At the risk of sounding sexist (I’m not) or superficial (I am), I thought the hair over her eye was distracting. I wanted to brush it back for her.

As an ad, just an ad, it’s not too bad. “B / B-“
“Why?”
She introduces herself, she shows her family, tells who she is running against, and why she’s running.
Cookie-cutter, “conservative” reasoning, checks a bunch of boxes, gets her name out.
It’s a “B / B-“

Usually a candidate tries to smile and be happy about running. She looked kind of angry throughout. But hey, you can’t start a happy revolution.

“I will not lie, cheat or steal, or tolerate others who do.”
Nonsense.
Jeanie Ives tolerated everything Bruce Rauner did right up until HB 40.
