Raoul releases new TV ad

Tuesday, Sep 4, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* It’s the day after Labor Day, so the new TV ads are rapidly filling up my in-box…

Today, Sen. Kwame Raoul’s campaign for Attorney General released a new television ad, “What Erika Harold Believes,” highlighting his Republican opponent’s shocking views on the safety of children and her consistent record of discrimination against the LGBTQ community.

“Erika Harold has repeatedly supported policies that discriminate against people like me,” said State Representative Greg Harris, chief sponsor of Illinois’ marriage equality law. “Prejudice has no place in our state, let alone the attorney general’s office. Kwame has a long history of protecting our families and fighting for equal rights, and I know he will defend the progress we’ve worked so hard to achieve.” […]

Harold, who claims her personal views don’t matter because she will simply “enforce the law,” didn’t feel that way in 2014 when she supported prohibiting the U.S. Department of Justice from undermining the Defense of Marriage Act, which the Supreme Court had already found unconstitutional.

“I would support an amendment defining marriage as being between a man and a woman,” Harold told the Champaign News-Gazette while running for Congress in 2014.

[Narrator] “You still won’t believe what Erika Harold believes. We know she’d discriminate against a loving, gay couple who want to adopt a child, favoring an abusive, straight couple instead. But she also supports a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and would even allow employers to fire workers, just for being gay.

“Kwame Raoul believes children must be protected from abusers, and everyone should be treated equally no matter who you love.”

[Kwame Raoul] “I’m Kwame Raoul. This is the work of my life. And I’m just getting started.”

    Preaching to the choir.

Erika has a chance but I just don’t think Rauner is going to pony up for the stretch run. He’s got far more money problems with JB than to help Erika or others down ticket.

Kwame… Time of my life stuff… stop acting like you are the next President Obama.

  4. - Lucky Pierre - Tuesday, Sep 4, 18 @ 12:53 pm:

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama also had personal views, they publicly stated that marriage was between a Man and a Woman.

Erica Harold as Attorney General would support firing people “just because they are gay”? Kwame has jumped the shark.

  5. - Oh Really? - Tuesday, Sep 4, 18 @ 1:01 pm:

Isn’t it time for an Attorney General candidate who says “I’m (Name) and I will aggressively pursue corruption in state contracting, malfeasance in appointments of friends and relatives of elected officials to government jobs and the rampant waste, fraud and abuse in Illinois. This is the work of the job I am seeking.”

    Re Oh Really’s comment.
Wouldn’t that be nice? Instead of talking about hot button social issues and the Miss America pageant.

Would be nice if someone said it and meant it.

==Isn’t it time for an Attorney General candidate who==

…at best doesn’t understand the office’s actual powers, at worst is lying to the public about them? No. No it isn’t such time.

=This is the work of my life. And I’m just getting started=

He’s 53 years old and he’s just getting started? Talk about pacing yourself.

A vote for Kwame is a vote for business as usual in the AG office. It is a glorified better business bureau. Don’t look for any review of political corruption coming from him.

  9. - west wing - Tuesday, Sep 4, 18 @ 1:41 pm:

Agree w Vanilla - preaching to the choir.

    Kwame has these votes already.

  10. - DarkHorse - Tuesday, Sep 4, 18 @ 1:55 pm:

Yeah, Raoul has these votes but this ad is designed to get inside Harold’s head, put her on the defensive, complicate her fundraising. Does anyone think Mrs. Rauner, for example, want Bruce to give more money to an “anti-LGBTQ” candidate?

  11. - Pundent - Tuesday, Sep 4, 18 @ 2:04 pm:

=Don’t look for any review of political corruption coming from him.=

Well since that isn’t really the mandate of the office maybe business as usual isn’t all that bad?

  12. - SSL - Tuesday, Sep 4, 18 @ 2:13 pm:

It’s right there on the AG’s web page.

    Open and Honest Government.

The fact they don’t worry about that Honest part doesn’t mean they shouldn’t.

  13. - Cheryl44 - Tuesday, Sep 4, 18 @ 2:16 pm:

As loathsome as I find Harold’s views I’d like to know his actual plans for the office.

  14. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Sep 4, 18 @ 2:41 pm:

Amen, Cheryl. What a terrible campaign this guy is running, not that I am surprised.

  15. - NeverPoliticallyCorrect - Tuesday, Sep 4, 18 @ 3:28 pm:

In a state that defines what political blue means, he shouldn’t lose but he gives very little reason to vote for him, just against her.

    ===Preaching to the choir.===

Sometimes the choir needs a reminder. See: two in five labor households for Rauner in 2014.

  17. - Messiah not - Tuesday, Sep 4, 18 @ 5:11 pm:

Not a fan of Erica but the other guy has an over inflated view of himself.

  18. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Sep 4, 18 @ 7:04 pm:

That AG race is on fire.

    Who knows what might happen?

    Same with SOS, Comptroller, Treasurer.

Rauner is really building an ILGOP, what with the recruitment and ground game his money has bought.

SSL @ 1:36 pm- “It is a glorified better business bureau.” Agree totally. The AG has a “public corruption bureau” but there is no way to figure out who runs it, without reading the press releases.

“Don’t look for any review of political corruption coming from him.” Again agree totally. When I was in Springfield in spring of 2013 neutralizing the damage Rep. Brandon Phelps and his henchman NRA lobbyist Todd Vandermyde were doing in their concealed carry bill, Raoul was chairman of Senate judiciary which heard the bill. He didn’t lift a finger to remove the Duty to Inform, and he never responded to my calls, emails, or a postal letter. Elaine Nekritz met with me in her Stratton office without an appointment, what a difference. Raoul is completely overrated as the savior of civil rights from Hyde Park.

wame was chairman of the Senate jn me by phone, email, postal letter

  20. - M - Tuesday, Sep 4, 18 @ 10:13 pm:

He needs to beat the drum on a different topic. Such as: his visions for the AG’s office.
