My baloney has a first name

Friday, Oct 12, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Gov. Rauner was asked about education funding reform in last night’s debate

RAUNER: “Kaitlin, education funding is simply the most important thing we do together as a community. I ran for governor to have the best schools in America and the strongest, fastest growing economy, and we’re making progress on both. Truth is, in the ten years before I became governor, we had one party rule, dominated by Mike Madigan, along with Blagojevich and Quinn. In that ten years, state support for education was cut four times in the prior ten years. We were one of the worst states for state support for local education. I ran for governor to fix that. And this baloney about Andy Manar. He was in the Senate then, he was part of the failure of that. I became governor. I created a bipartisan task force. We now have $1.4 billion dollars more every year from the state to our local schools. Record funding. And we have a new education funding formula that’s more equitable.”

PRITZKER: “That happened in spite of you, not because of you, governor.”

RAUNER: “That I led, Mr. Pritzker. Could have happened anytime prior to my governorship.”

PRITZKER: “Happened in spite of you.”

RAUNER: “And you know what? If you’re going to interrupt, [PAUSE] be careful about the perjury, Mr. Pritzker.”

* Sen. Manar’s response…

Manar also did a radio interview this morning, but I haven’t listened to it yet.

Better to take credit for someone else’s accomplishments than admit you have none of your own?

  2. - Robert the Bruce - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 9:21 am:

Honest question: do you think Rauner believes this was his accomplishment or do you think he knows it wasn’t and is trying to claim it as his?

  3. - FedUp - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 9:24 am:

National politics are simply Illinois politics two years later. Of course he believes this!

  4. - Pick a Name - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 9:25 am:

Well, in one of his TV ads, Andy claims he is working to freeze property taxes.

    Sure you are Andy!

  5. - Retired Educator - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 9:25 am:

Robert; I think he constantly makes his own reality. As George Castanza said “It isn’t a lie if you believe it” I think the Governor believes his own lies.

  6. - Henry Francis - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 9:32 am:

Robert, I think he knows he is lying. But he does truly believe that he is the one person who can save this state. If he needs to lie to us in order to save us, well then that is just the sacrifice he will make.

  7. - GA Watcher - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 9:34 am:

Sen. Manar will make a good Governor some day.

  8. - wordslinger - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 9:34 am:

A high point (or low point, depending on your point of view) of Rauner’s short-lived summer romance with the IPI types was his attempted rewrite of SB1 in August ‘17.

Standing before the cameras, Rauner started out arrogantly explaining — and butchering — the amendatory veto and budget processes involved.

Then, as reporters pushed back as to how he was totally wrong, and how all education funding was now in serious jeopardy just weeks before schools were to open, the deer in the headlights emerged…..

Live on tape, it was confirmed that the governor and his band of dorm-room zealots had no idea what they had done, or what they were doing.

  9. - Credit - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 9:37 am:

I know this isn’t the most important point, but if you’re the Governor don’t you think you should know a person can’t commit perjury during a debate? If lying to reporters or during a debate were a crime, Rauner would be serving life sentences.

  10. - Iggy - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 9:39 am:

I’ll give my kids synthetic garbage just so i get the twitters to like my funny. hehe.

  11. - Flat Bed Ford - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 9:46 am:

If anybody knows phony bologna it’s Manar. And who feeds their kids that stuff anymore? Is that all a senator can afford these days?

    Iggy = Seth McMillan?

==And who feeds their kids that stuff anymore?==

Dunno how they do it on the North Shore cocktail party circuit, but here in Real Illinois kids still love that stuff.

  14. - The Way I See It - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 10:08 am:

The perjury remark was a weird non sequitur

  15. - City Zen - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 10:10 am:

Did Bruce or JB explain how we were going to pay for it?

–I’ll give my kids synthetic garbage just so i get the twitters to like my funny. hehe.–

    Harrumph-harrumph.

Will there be a debate in the race for state Constipated Nanny?

  17. - TKMH - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 10:17 am:

Just remember, 90% of what he wanted still wasn’t good enough for Bruce on ed funding.

LOL, so nothing about the governor or his bizarre mental breakdown of a debate performance.

No comments on his outright lies.

Nothing about his lack of accomplishments.

Just comments about a twitter joke?

Boy, you guys really have some game today.

    I am envious. /s

  19. - don the legend - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 10:32 am:

Would Iggy and FBF have me throw away my fried baloney, bacon, egg and cheese sandwich I plan to eat today for lunch? What about the chocolate milk I plan to drink with it, is that ok?

  20. - @misterjayem - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 10:36 am:

Is baloney still made with salt, grease and ground-up organ meat? Or has some bozo screwed that up too?

    – MrJM

  21. - NoGifts - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 11:04 am:

National Bologna Day is October 24! So please stop the food shaming. :)

  22. - Pundent - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 12:03 pm:

Rauner got a likability problem. He’s not going to fix that by lying.

  23. - Skeptic - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 12:18 pm:

“Or has some bozo screwed that up too?” Probably some goofball from northern California.

  24. - M - Friday, Oct 12, 18 @ 1:44 pm:

==”As George Castanza said “It isn’t a lie if you believe it”==

This is the new Republican party’s motto: Sale the lies until they believe its true.
