*** UPDATED x2 - Speaker Ryan to campaign for Davis *** Trump likely coming to Illinois to boost Bost

Friday, Oct 19, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Daily Egyptian

In a memo obtained by the Daily Egyptian, Carbondale City Manager Gary Williams said to city council members President Trump could potentially be holding a rally in Carbondale on Oct. 27.

“Our PD was contacted on Monday from the US Secret Service (SSA) to inform us that President Trump is interested in having a political rally in Carbondale on 10/27,” Williams said in the memo. “Although these conversations were preliminary, it sounded to us that there was a decent chance that the event could happen.”

I checked around earlier and was told he’s planning to hold a rally for Congressman Mike Bost. President Trump traveled to Granite City in July for a rally with Bost and US Rep. Rodney Davis. Gov. Rauner noticeably skipped that event. He also didn’t attend Vice President Pence’s rally in Springfield this month.

*** UPDATE 1 *** BND

U.S. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan is scheduled to visit World Wide Technology next week during a campaign stop for U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis.

Ryan plans to take a tour of the facility on Tuesday afternoon and discuss the tax reform signed into law last year.

Halloween returns to SIU. Should be fun.

  2. - wordslinger - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:00 pm:

–Gov. Rauner noticeably skipped that event.–

If McCann starts tukkus-smooching now on the twitters, he might have a shot at getting on stage.

I suggest employing phrases like “witch hunt,” “fake news,” and “no collusion.”

  3. - Fixer - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:00 pm:

Well, that should make for an interesting Halloween weekend for Carbondale.

  4. - Henry Francis - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:05 pm:

So that’s why BTIA has been furiously trying to line up events for the Guv in the Quad Cities on the 27th.

  5. - GOPgal - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:07 pm:

FINALLY someone worth paying attention to in this state. Someone who knows how to be something other than a do-nothing snoozefest.

  6. - Anonymous - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:10 pm:

Can’t wait for his amateur insult comic routine. What clunky zinger will he come up with?

    hasn’t siuc suffered enough?
    apparently not.

  8. - thoughts matter - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:12 pm:

Google search implores Unofficial Halliween was last weekend. There is a ‘big’ family oriented fall festival planned downtown that day into the evening. So Trump is going to show up and mess that all up with security?

  9. - Please No - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:12 pm:

Please no. Please. Don’t. Really though. Just no.

    -Carbondale

  10. - Blue Dog Dem - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:26 pm:

Actually the Donald and old Blue are going to hit the Shawnee Wine Trail…..never mind. The guy doesn’t drink.

  11. - Publius - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:28 pm:

Any prosteters should wear mushroom hats

  12. - Anonymous - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:29 pm:

Which journalist will the president encourage Bost to assault?

  13. - cdog - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:31 pm:

If Rauner has an ounce of risk-taker in his bones, like he claims, he should show up at the Trump rally.

He has nothing to lose. /ha

  14. - Matts - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:34 pm:

Actually, Trump and Pence made a point to tell Rauner “it’d be great if you didn’t show up”…. That pretty well sums up Brewski Bruce these days.

  15. - Anonymous - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:39 pm:

Looking for GOPgal to beat up a journalist.

  16. - Ron Burgundy - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:39 pm:

If Trump comes to IL to boost Bost, and boasts he’s the best, will that make his re-election a bust?

  17. - AlfondoGonz - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:40 pm:

Rich, you’ve got to go. You might get a “I covered a Trump rally and all I got was bodyslammed” t-shirt.

  18. - 47th Ward - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:44 pm:

I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody’s part.

  19. - Wilson - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:51 pm:

Notice the dichotomy: Rauner spent his time in office bashing Rs, while Trump (regardless of your opinion) is making the rounds to help Rs.

  20. - Anonymous - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 12:58 pm:

So which Northeastern Illinois GOP politician is going to go and campaign with their President? If you go you get labeled that your with Trump to suburban woman. If you don’t go it shows you don’t respect the President of your party and don’t care about your base.

This may help Bost but it sure opens up questions for Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Cook and Will County Republicans, doesn’t it now.

Will Peter Roskam be there? Does he respect the President of his party?
Will Tom Morrison be there? Does he respect the President of his party?

Just keep throwing that question to every suburban Republican and watch. Maybe a Daily Herald article about which Republicans from NE Illinois want to be seen with their President?

  21. - Huh? - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 1:02 pm:

    “hasn’t siuc suffered enough?”

    Our sorry State.

  22. - Almost the weekend - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 1:02 pm:

    Anonymous at 12:58pm.

Only person who get hit on this is Rauner. He governs the whole state. Ask anybody in those districts where Carbondale and Granite City are located on a map and they would have no idea.

Just like 2010 when nobody wanted to be seen with Obama. It’s how it works when one party has control of executive and legislative branch.

2016 presidential vote by county tells the story..

  24. - Chris P. Bacon - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 1:06 pm:

Hope he does come. Nothing highlights the pointlessness and uselessness of Illinois politicians better than having to be compared to this President who is getting so much done for this country.

  25. - Anon - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 1:07 pm:

== This may help Bost but it sure opens up questions for Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Cook and Will County Republicans ==

Questions like why would a suburban congressman and legislator drive over six hours to stump in a district where no one knows them?

  26. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 1:08 pm:

===2016 presidential vote by county tells the story..==

    Counties don’t vote.

    Trump lost the popular vote.

Publis @ 12:28: Do you suppose anyone has told him that the region is known as “Little” Egypt?

  29. - Texas Red - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 1:43 pm:

    Trump lost the popular vote

not in the 12th district - he took 55% of the votes

  30. - NoGifts - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 1:44 pm:

    LOL that’s boast not bost.

  31. - Def not a Dem - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 2:01 pm:

    Hard pass

  32. - efudd - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 2:02 pm:

With Kelley gaining on Representative Present, I hope Trump does campaign for him.

  33. - PJ - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 2:05 pm:

Maybe he wants to hike the great outdoor trails down there. Oh wait, he’s basically Jabba the Hutt.

  34. - Anonymous - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 2:08 pm:

Theres 2000 steel workers in that district that just signed a decent contract.

  35. - LXB - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 2:38 pm:

SIUC doesn’t have a chancellor at the moment, so I’m very interested to find out who approved this. For a university that started off the year telling cheerleaders they couldn’t kneel to now host Trump is pretty appalling.

  36. - Arthur Andersen - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 3:31 pm:

Hmmm. The memo referenced in the story also mentions a visit to Springfield. Team Rodney must be really worried.

Oh, and LXB, the President doesn’t need the permission of anyone at SIU to visit the City of Carbondale.

  37. - Blue Dog Dem - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 3:37 pm:

LXB. Maybe this is what SIUC needs to turn itself around, but what AA said. Carbondale.

  38. - LXB - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 4:06 pm:

The memo specifically talks about the White House working with SIU to secure a possible venue (presumably the arena, though I have heard today that it may be just a quick stop at the airport). I’ve had a chance to ask some campus higher-ups today what the story is, and none knew who was involved in these discussions.

  39. - Albany Park Patriot - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 4:28 pm:

What does Paul Ryan get you? Can’t he just send a check?

  40. - Blue Dog Dem - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 4:34 pm:

LxB. Well if thats the case,SIUC should welcome any President with open arms.do you think Trump coming can hurt enrollment. a popular President in southern Illinois can only help.

  41. - L.A. - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 4:39 pm:

oh, please let Trump visit Springfield. I’m working on my protest sign right now.

And Trump does not need permission from SIU to visit the city of Carbondale, but the only venue in Carbondale for the rally will be on campus.

The only main airport in the region is in Marion/Herrin and I don’t think they have a HUGE hanger big enough for Trump’s head.

  42. - L.A. - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 4:40 pm:

“a popular President in southern Illinois can only help.”

He has like a 38% approval rating; I would not call that popular

  43. - Arthur Andersen - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 5:02 pm:

The long runway at SI Airport is 6500 feet. No way for Air Force One. Marion has 8000 which is the minimum acceptable length.

  44. - blue dog dem - Friday, Oct 19, 18 @ 5:03 pm:

L.A. are you sure Trump can read? I hear he doesn’t like too. But he is VERY popular in southern Illinois.
