New Rauner ad: “JB stands for Jail Bird”

Tuesday, Oct 30, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* It doesn’t say in the press release if this is a TV ad or a digital ad, so keep that in mind…

Today, the Rauner campaign is launching a new ad titled “Crooks.” The ad features Stan, a former UAW worker from Chicago Heights, and Pete, a union carpenter from Chicago.

In the ad, Stan and Pete say that Illinois can’t afford to elect JB Pritzker because of his corrupt history with Rod Blagojevich and that he’ll be Mike Madigan’s puppet to hike taxes and kill jobs. The ad finishes with Governor Rauner stating that “this might be our last chance.”

* The ad

* Script…

Stan: I’m voting for Bruce Rauner because Pritzker is a tax-hiking job-killer.

Pete: This guy tried to bribe Blago.

Stan: He’s a tax cheat. He stole from us.

Pete: JB stands for Jail Bird.

Stan: Junior Blago.

Pete: The man is Mike Madigan’s puppet.

Stan: Those two will steal us blind.

Pete: Bruce Rauner is our only shot.

Stan: I’m voting for Bruce Rauner to save us from all these crooks.

Graphic: Vote Bruce Rauner. Save our state.

Rauner: This might be our last chance.

Lets just say that some union members absolutely don’t know what is good for them. Eg Janus case owned by our governor.

  2. - Honeybadger - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:21 am:

    Ugh

  3. - Strategy Geek - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:23 am:

Rauner’s next ad will be a posthumus endorsement from Bernie Epton “Before it’s too late.”

  4. - Maestro - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:24 am:

And yet, it is the Governor whose administration is in front of a Grand Jury.

  5. - slow down - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:24 am:

It’s all been said before many, many times. If it hasn’t worked to this point, I don’t see how new versions of the same tired attack are going to move the needle now.

  6. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:26 am:

    I could go into a long-worded rebuff. I won’t.

I’ll leave that to Diana Rauner, herself…

===We (The Ounce) are so grateful to the J.B. and M.K. Pritzker Family Foundation for sharing our belief in these innovations,” said Diana Rauner, president of the Ounce of Prevention Fund. “By developing strong leaders and programs, empowering parents and strengthening early learning systems, together we can change lives for children and families.”===

If JB Pritzker is all those things, why would The Ounce and Diana Rauner praise JB, his family, the foundations, as they are…

… when JB, his family, their foundations helped The Ounce and Diana Rauner when they needed it most… when Bruce’s administraton was hurting social services. Purposely.

I trust Diana Rauner and The Ounce. Not this ad.

  7. - Montrose - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:26 am:

Subjecting it to the no sound test, all I know is there are two guys talking about something, and that apparently it is pro-Rauner because I’m told to vote for Rauner at the end. I would not call that effective.

  8. - Grandson of Man - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:27 am:

Any union member or former union member who supports Rauner is like the chicken looking for the fox to become its meal. Scary dumb.

This failed so far. What is suddenly different now?

  9. - Texas Red - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:29 am:

Looks like the trades didn’t get the memo.

  10. - Mama - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:29 am:

    Top of the mornin’ Rich,
Of all the IL governors whom went to jail, how many were Democrats and how many were Republicans?

  11. - DarkHorse - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:30 am:

When I see this ad, I’m disappointed in J.B. and Raoul. I’m not a lawyer, but what happened- or didn’t happen - at Sterigenics seems criminal to me. Quincy too. Why aren’t they running ads about this all the time?

Raoul should be: Rauner is part of the reason these people got sick and died. You elect Harold, he gets off scott free. No wonder he gave her $2 million.

  12. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:31 am:

===how many were Democrats and how many were Republicans?===

    How many Chicago aldermen….

Party has no meaning in crime. Party does not make one party less criminal than another, people do.

  13. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:33 am:

    ===Looks like the trades===

The UAW is an industrial union, not a trade union, although they do have skilled trades members.

  14. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:34 am:

===Looks like the trades didn’t get the memo.===

All two in this ad, or….

Agree, Same hymn in the hymnal.

Rauner needs to be likable for this to work.

    Rauner is not likable.

  15. - Truthteller - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:36 am:

So there’s more than 1 million active and retired union members in the state, and Rauner has the support of one of each.
Of course, there’s always the possibility that Stan didn’t retire. Perhaps he was dismissed. Isn’t the Ford Stamping Plant the place where sexual harassment was rampant?

  16. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:36 am:

@DarkHorse: It’s easy to second guess campaigns. Those ads, especially the effective ones, take time to develop and now it can be hard to find enough broadcast time for the message to fully percolate.

But I agree that the Raoul campaign has not run as hard as they might have. A good and likely effective campaign, just a little flatfooted.

  17. - Downstate Dem - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:39 am:

Are these guys actually union members or people who say they are members of a union? Have the leaders of UAW or the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters verified the membership? Ask the AFSCME members who voted for Rauner how that worked.

  18. - Arsenal - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:40 am:

    Word salad.

  19. - Whatever - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:40 am:

==Rauner: This might be our last dance.==

    Fixed it.

  20. - Duopoly - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:42 am:

No problem - JB picked Juliana as backup and I think she’d probably be a better governor than JB and definitely Rauner.

  21. - Mama - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:43 am:

“Party has no meaning in crime.”

When a criminal takes over the party, the party becomes infected.

Really? Trump now owns the Republican party now, and he is heavily involved in promoting crime.

  22. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:45 am:

    ===When a criminal===

So it goes back to the person, not the party.

    The person. Not the party.

It’s not a party thing. Individuals corrupt.

  23. - AlfondoGonz - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:46 am:

If Bruce Rauner is our “last shot,” then I’ll take my chances with the Great Dark Beyond.

  24. - Roadiepig - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 9:56 am:

The citizens of Illinois gave Rauner a chance when they voted him in four years ago. He blew his chance, and I’m hopeful that the citizens will not give him his “last chance” to finish the damage that he has already caused.

  27. - Cubs in '16 - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 10:14 am:

Stan and Pete sure changed the mind of this union member. /s

  28. - The Dude Abides - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 10:32 am:

In 2014 Rauner got a decent amount of Union votes because those folks were mad at Pat Quinn. After becoming Governor Rauner wasted no time alienating those Union folks who voted for him. He couldn’t help himself because a primary reason he wanted to be Governor was to make Illinois a cheap labor state and destroying Unions is a big step in that process. Now, a week before election day and trailing in the polls he releases this ad thinking it will garner him some votes. Give me a break.

  29. - Barrington - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 10:39 am:

This ad is a waste of money. Trying to get union votes seems like a nonstarter and this may repel those suburban mom votes. Wait that’s already been dine with Sterigenics.

  30. - bafraid98 - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 10:47 am:

I’m an active employee at the Chicago Stamping plant here in Ford Heights…and I can tell you first hand that “Stan”..was not a UAW member…he was management…

  31. - Rabid - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 11:03 am:

This might be our last chance. You might just be a Raunerite if you like chance

  32. - Roadrager - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 11:20 am:

==You might just be a Raunerite if you like chance==

    But definitely not Chance.

  33. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 11:33 am:

How did Rauner find these mopes?

  34. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 11:49 am:

=When a criminal takes over the party, the party becomes infected.

Really? Trump now owns the Republican party now, and he is heavily involved in promoting crime.=

For a guy that has Sterigenics and Quincy looming Rauner throws corrupt around pretty carelessly.

I assume that is who you are talking about. Am I right?

  35. - Pot calling kettle - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 11:55 am:

At least it didn’t end with an expletive…

  36. - Stuntman Bob's Brother - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 11:57 am:

Seeing that JB has never spent time inside, the ad is definitely unfair.

Give him some time, though, maybe he’ll be able to fumble his way into a Federal pen in Colorado, I hear there is at least one guy in there that he knows quite well.

  37. - JB13 - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 12:19 pm:

    – Do the same thing over and over and over again and expect a different result. —

The same thing… over and over… like, I dunno, electing the same guy to serve as Speaker since 1983?

  38. - Practical Politics - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 12:23 pm:

It plays like the “Epton Before It’s Too Late” spot. That did not end well.

  39. - Values Voters - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 1:20 pm:

Two white, high school-educated, blue collar men.

This isn’t an appeal to union members, Rauner is still trying to win the primary and consolidate his base.

    And he is failing.

  40. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 2:08 pm:

–Rauner: This might be our last chance.–

    Messiah complex.

But I’ve already exercised my last chance to vote against Rauner.

Any union member or former union member who supports Pritzker is like the chicken looking for the fox as a meal. Scary dumb.

I mean the guy couldnt even hire union trades to work on his personal residence.

  42. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 3:03 pm:

===the guy couldnt even hire union trades to work===

Some were union. A few weren’t.

  43. - Soccermom - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 3:12 pm:

Could somebody please explain why my dog is going nuts? (She is yellow dog Democrat — may have some influence on her response.)

  44. - Blue Dog Dem - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 4:35 pm:

Some were union. Yes. In the day. Before the national plummet in union membership, those that are wouldn’t have crossed the picket line. Oh. You mean there wasnt a picket line?

  45. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 7:26 pm:

He wanted to lower the minimum wage in Illinois to the Federal minimum wage.

My comment is about both Rauner and Trump’s corruptions.
