The day after his Super Tuesday success, former Vice President Joe Biden picked up the endorsements of three Illinois U.S. House members, his campaign announced Wednesday.
U.S. Reps. Bill Foster, Robin Kelly and Mike Quigley are all backing Biden. The surging Democratic contender continues to pick up support among Illinois’ elected officials ahead of the state’s March 17 primary.
“In Chicago, we know something about toughness and resilience, and nobody embodies that spirit more than Joe Biden,” Quigley said in a release. “On all the issues that matter most in our community, Joe has been fighting beside us for decades.” […]
The three House members follow Illinois U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth and Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White in throwing their support to Biden in recent days. He also has the backing of U.S. Reps. Danny Davis and Brad Schneider.

Biden was leading in the polls to begin with, and then he slipped. Now he’s found “equilibrium.” He’s back to being the frontrunner, thanks in large part to South Carolina African-American voters.
Illinois Democrats are staying with one of their own, a fellow Democrat. Loyalty can mean a lot. Last night Bernie was attacking the establishment (not a good way to win friends and influence people). Voters themselves and not “the establishment” had the biggest influence in reshaping the race last night.

What “happened” was … South Carolina.
Iowa and New Hampshire are now 3rd tier “carnie rides”… for Democrats, the South Carolina primary put into clear focus how diversity lets top choices show real strength.
To bring this all back to Illinois-centric… I’d like to see Bloomberg keep EVERY office, staffer every part of his infrastructure in place and use that to not only help defeat Trump, but defeat Trumpkins in both chambers of Congress.
If Bloomberg does that, even in place like Illinois, then the half a billion spent will be worth every penny.

I also figured his other goal was to get enough delegates that he could serve as a power broker at the Democrat convention. It was, for the 2008 primary season, the IL GA pushed up the primary to first Tuesday in February and joined Super Tuesday to boost then Senator Barack Obama’s presidential prospects.
After the 2010 midterm primary, the IL GA changed the Illinois primary back to the 3rd Tuesday in March.

I was a Mayor Pete guy. I thought he made some really sound points about democrats in statewide house and senate races having to explain or defend the policies of a progressive at the top of the ticket. However, I have 0 faith that Biden could win a general election. I don’t think he’ll have as much of a polarizing effect on the house and senate races as Bernie would, and perhaps that’s a net positive for democrats nationwide, but I have little faith he has the stamina to deliver strong performances from now until November.

I think mrjayem and pundent misunderstand Steve’s point, which is that the premise of the defenders of the law overturned by Citizens United was that without the law, corporations would simply buy elections, and that premise is disproved by recent events. I think Steve is wrong - these events show only that you cannot buy an election for someone with no intrinsic appeal.

This whole process reminds me that Illinois needs to be at the front of the nomination process, not an afterthought. Why do South Carolina or Texas - states that never go democratic in presidential elections- determine our nominee? Sharkey and Davis Gates’ endorsements are good for Bernie, but it underlines the actual union isn’t backing him (or anyone). The union endorsement isn’t just something to put in an ad - its money and feet on the ground. Bernie could use those as the center rallies around Biden.

I will be interested in the turn out for both the Democratic and Republican primaries in Illinois. Given that Trump is largely running unopposed across America his primary vote totals have been significant. Rolling Stone did an article on this a few days ago and Trump amassed a significant vote in Texas. Trump’s supporters are making a point of voting for him in the primaries. Even in overwhelmingly Democrat California no more than 48% of registered Democrats are likely to have voted when all the votes are counted. There are over 9 million formally registered Democrats in California according to the Ca Sec of State. In Illinois we have just over 8 million voters in total according to the IL State Board of Elections. In the 2016 primary the turn out was only around 47%, Of those who voted 1,460,341 took Republican ballots of those votes Trump received 562,464 votes in Illinois in the primary. Watch Trump’s primary vote totals in Illinois if they are within even 20% of the combined primary votes for Sanders and Biden the Democrats are in trouble for the general election.
