Question of the day

Tuesday, Apr 28, 2026 - Posted by Rich Miller

* The Senate has a habit of using commemorative bills which passed the House as vehicles for the Budget Implementation Act. For instance, in 2023, a House bill declaring the soybean as the official state bean was gutted and replaced. Last year, a House-approved Diwali Day bill was substituted with BIMP language in the Senate.

So, I thought I’d have a little fun today.

* The Question: Which of these two bills do you support using as this year’s BIMP?…

HB4438: Designates the Black-and-Gold Bumblebee (Bombus auricomus) as the official State bee of the State of Illinois.

HB4669: Provides that the Italian beef sandwich is designated as the official State sandwich of the State of Illinois. And provides that the horseshoe sandwich is designated as the official State open-faced sandwich of the State of Illinois.

* Take the poll and then explain your answer in comments, please. Snark, of course, is heavily encouraged.

Votes for the Golden Bumblebee. If it doesn’t happen this year, I fear the lobbyists for Common Eastern Bumble Bee (Bombus impatiens) won’t ever let it happen.

  2. - StarLineChicago - Tuesday, Apr 28, 26 @ 1:57 pm:

Pass the State Bee bill and use HB4669 as the BIMP so the General Assembly can take the time to get the State Sandwich right (it should be a hot dog).

  3. - George Ryan Reynolds - Tuesday, Apr 28, 26 @ 1:57 pm:

I vote for the sammiches bill. Because if the Senate guts and replaces with the BIMP, the House will definitely BEEF about it.

(I’ll show myself out, thank you very much!)

  4. - Not Rich - Tuesday, Apr 28, 26 @ 1:57 pm:

Never mess with the Italian caucus

  5. - The Opinions Bureau - Tuesday, Apr 28, 26 @ 2:00 pm:

Fight the Combine, gut the Chicago/Springfield sandwich bill.

  6. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Apr 28, 26 @ 2:02 pm:

    ===Fight the Combine===

Gonna be hard to top that one.

  7. - Facts Matter - Tuesday, Apr 28, 26 @ 2:04 pm:

HB 4669. Like the horseshoe, rightly or wrongly the BIMP will be accused of representing unhealthy excess.

  8. - H-W - Tuesday, Apr 28, 26 @ 2:05 pm:

It must be the sandwich bill. It would be inappropriate for elementary school children to be associated with this BIMP.

  9. - Norseman - Tuesday, Apr 28, 26 @ 2:06 pm:

HB 4438 stings, so it’s gotta go.

  10. - New Day - Tuesday, Apr 28, 26 @ 2:10 pm:

Horseshoe is disgusting and I would never want to honor it with a law. So gut and replace, baby.

  11. - Lurker - Tuesday, Apr 28, 26 @ 2:11 pm:

I voted for 4438 because my grandma taught me honey attracts better things so it would morph into a great, sensible bill

  12. - Casper The Ghost Bus - Tuesday, Apr 28, 26 @ 2:33 pm:

The beef is going back wet to the House

  13. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Tuesday, Apr 28, 26 @ 2:45 pm:

    Gut the sandwich bill.

There is nothing more un-Chicagoan (and un-Illinoisan, frankly) than compromising over a “Best Food” debate.

A companion bill declaring the Chicago Cubs the state’s official MLb baseball team, while the White Sox as the state’s official American League team, and the Cardinal’s the state’s official Neighboring State Team cannot be far behind.

I did not think I would see the day when the House Republicans were leading the push to pass out participation trophies for food categories.

I have issues with the bee as well. Students only researched ten species to come up with a recommendation, there are 500 bee species native to Illinois, I have seen two dozen just in my backyard.

But 50 years ago we were taught to fear/kill bees so I am going to take the win with this postcard species, even though I am more of a carpenter bee fan.
