Illinois GOP attacks Democrat ‘priority’ bill that hasn’t moved and is sponsored by a Republican
Friday, May 22, 2026 - Posted by Isabel Miller * The Illinois Republican Party last night… ![]() * Except, it turns out that HB5769 was sponsored by Republican Rep. Dave Severin earlier this month and has never emerged from the House Rules Committee. So, according to the ILGOP, Springfield Democrats are now prioritizing bills filed by Republican lawmakers and then leaving them parked in Rules? Also, even it was a Democratic bill, this is the best attack they got with a week or so to go in the session? The ILGOP’s tweet was deleted around 11 o’clock this morning. I’ve reached out to the state party and I’ll let you know if they respond.

I don’t think there’s anyone out there who thinks that Dave Severin has ever been an effective legislator, but I never would have gone as far to think that the Illinois GOP would forget that he is a Republican.
In an unrelated note, what an odd choice for the official state beverage. Perhaps this vanilla representative has some secrets.

Conventional wisdom: “Things are so bad there is nowhere for the Illinois Republican Party to go but up.”
New state GOP chair Bob Grogan: “Hold my beer.”

I can’t do any better than Candy and Here We Go already have, although I will also say that that is an odd beverage choice.
More to the point, such a weak attack with nothing of substance does seem on brand for GOP.

===an odd beverage choice===
The other day when we were under much stress because my mom (her grandma) received a negative health report, Isabel and I both had strawberry milkshakes. It helped.
So, not odd at all.

So Severin is a Democrat now?
They wonder why they lose statewide races….
- Socially DIstant Watcher - Friday, May 22, 26 @ 12:45 pm:
Severin filed that bill…
Eleven days ago.
Seriously?
- Excitable Boy - Friday, May 22, 26 @ 12:52 pm:
Maybe they let Salvi have one last besotted press release for old times’ sake.

=== Isabel and I both had strawberry milkshakes. It helped.===
I’m glad they provided some comfort and am sorry to hear about your mother.
To clarify my comment, it isn’t that I don’t find a strawberry milkshake delicious. I am just ignorant of any specific association of the State of Illinois with the strawberry milkshake. I know that the malted milkshake was specifically invented at a Walgreens in Illinois.
I’m just not aware of any specific connection between the State of Illinois and the strawberry milkshake.

==So, not odd at all.==
Apologies, Rich.
- Bob Grogan - Friday, May 22, 26 @ 1:26 pm:
I had it taken down because it wasn’t true. Then I called Rep Severin to apologize when I learned that the idea for the bill came from a 4th grader in his district. So you can understand how easy it was for us to confuse the idea of a 4th grader with those coming from Democrats.

===Bob Grogan - Friday, May 22, 26 @ 1:26 pm:===
So Representative Dave Severin lets a 4th grader do his work?
- Excitable Boy - Friday, May 22, 26 @ 1:45 pm:

Yes, you clearly are the smart adults, Bob.
- Wayne - Friday, May 22, 26 @ 1:51 pm:
The ILGOP would be better served with a fourth grader at the helm.
- Casper The Ghost Bus - Friday, May 22, 26 @ 2:06 pm:
Congratulations on the new title Bob. Enjoy your year.

“So you can understand how easy it was for us to confuse the idea of a 4th grader with those coming from Democrats”
Not as easy as the Dems handing your party their rear ends every four years.

“I had it taken down because it wasn’t true”
It was something to ridicule until you realized the bill was actually a Republican bill? Oopsie.
And, then you throw the 4th grader under the bus.
Off to a flying start.
