I start with the view that all Dead songs are ultimately about mortality and so is Sugaree, but now I am not so sure.
Is the wagon coming around the bend a police wagon or the undertaker?
Is the “last voice calling” the Sheriff or Death?
Is the Jubilee a homecoming in Heaven or back on the family farm?
The Biblical purpose of Jubilee under Jewish law is to remind us all that the land belongs to God and we are mere tenants. I know that Hunter aluded to criminals on the run…is it possible he was writing about mortality and didn’t even realize it?
Anyway, this is a great performance of a great song open to wide interpretations by the artists and audience.

Agree that the reference to the jubilee is deliberately vague.
Our band used to play this song fairly often. Always got a good response, probably more for the song than our performance.
