I have said many-a-times on this site over the last several months that Illinois is a Blue state, and we will continue to be. We Democrats are fed up with Right-wing propoganda and will support the party, period. Over 40% registered Democrats in this state, so my fellow bretheren, I say-Vote Democrat and keep this state moving forward. Ethanol, bio-diesel, clean coal technology, stem-cell research, nano-technology, pre-school for all 3 and 4 year olds, education tax breaks for middle class families, health care for veterans, and universal health care for children are key areas of growth and necessity for our state, and Democrats are right on those key issues that are most important to the people of Illinois. To not support and advance these basic, sound principles is unacceptable in the year 2006. Democrats are for these principles; Republicans are against them. Vote Democrat! The Fraternal Order of Police endorsed the Governor, along with a couple of Education unions, SEIU, etc., etc. As for AFSCME, they most likely will not endorse either candidate, just like in 1990 and 1994. State employees have discovered a new case of amnesia in the dept. of corrections. The Republicans did “everything” in their power to privatize state prison, ie. dietary and tore down the fences at Sheridan CC. The Gov. attempted to open many of the closed prisons, but the last admin. left us $5 Billion dollars in the hole. Whackenhut private prison corp. was the Republicans largest contributor in the last gen. elect. Give me a break about state employees. You need to put this in perspective. So, the Gov. does not give everything he promised, welcome to the real world. The other party not only tried to privatize 100’s of dietary jobs, they even made new uniforms that says Illinois Corrections, rather than Dept. of Corrections. Why? So the private prisons could not only have your jobs, but your uniforms too. Keep things in perspective, look at the big picture. Republican philosophy is supposedly all about “keep gubment” out of our lives’, including privatize everything except the military; and even then the right-wing fringe have their own supposed military-the good ole’ fashioned militias. You get the point. I will support any candidate from any party that most closely matches my beliefs and priorities, and does it in an ethical and financially-responsible way. If they fail me, I will vote for a candidate against them that hopefully will do better. Lately, many candidates from both parties have been failing me. Blago has also PROVEN that he is not the person who meets the ethical and financial requirements, just as Ryan did before him. Is Topinka the right person? I don’t know, she still has to show me a little bit more that she is. Is Whitney? I don’t know, let’s hear a little bit more from him. Maybe none of the candidates are good for Illinois. My point (I’m trying not to do the “verbal vomit” thing; it’s not a very good persuading tactic) is that it’s your right as an American to support any candidate you want. But, please, for the love of God, people, stop being a “party hack” just because that’s what you’ve always done. The radical fringes seem to be taking over both the Republicans and the Democrats. This is why I think polls are becoming so skewed and unpredictable of the last 4-6 years. Most people are waking up to this fact and looking away from the party and at the candidate. It’s true that Blago has had no charges or indictments levied against him (yet), but, as the old adage says, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. If there’s even a suggestion of impropriety, take it with a grain of salt. But when there are 4 years of multiple hints of impropriety, there just might be something behind it. As you stated, this is a Blue state; if there’s a conspiracy against Blago, that’s pretty amazing, isn’t it? I’m sorry; I did end up rambling. The economy in Illinois is on the upswing and revenue growth is increasing yearly. The number of new jobs in Illinois is increasing monthly. The gov has sponsored and signed ground breaking legislation during his first term. He has instituted benefit reforms at the state pension plans and decreased the number of state employees so that more state resources can go for programs in public safety, education, and, most importantly, health care. The entrenched state bureaucracy has been shaken up and during this period of change, some long term employees may have been forced to change their method of operations. From the many posts on this site, I assume many of them don’t like their new bosses and the new policies and procedures that have been instituted. The gov has tried to streamline government so that more state resources go to the citizens. He wants state gov’t to work for the people, not the other way around. While I may not agree with his stance on not raising taxes, I think that the opportunity to institute new programs for the people during a second Blagojevich administration is too good to pass up. We need to look to the future. We need to work together with the governor to make Illinois a leader in the country in providing services to its citizens. First of all, he’s a Dem and it’s still too close to 2000 for me to be able to vote for a GOP, and I just don’t like the Green guy. But then there are things I like about his administration. He signed the human rights bill which I bet Topinka would have done too, but he went out on a limb to demand women’s access to contraception. That’s a biggy to me, because around the world, it is always the right that opposes women’s right to determine if they will or will not be mothers. I’m not sure Topinka would have fought that fight. As to corruption, the Feds have had a good 2 years to indict them. That they have failed to do so leads me to believe they have nothing on him, same with Topinka and the investigation into her office. It’s so entrenched that Illinoisians accept it is as part of the political landscape. A candidate totally new to the Illinois political arena might be able to get some outrage going but neither of the current gubernatorial candidates fills that bill. Whitney doesn’t count but his low poll numbers suggest that there isn’t an outraged electorate out there waiting to be led on the corruption issue. And maybe it makes people uncomfortable, but yes, giving political supporters state jobs in violation of Rutan (and Shakman) and giving political donors lucrative state contracts is selling them.
