Today’s mailer

Tuesday, Apr 9, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller

* My former intern Mike Murray is running for Schaumburg Township trustee. The Schaumburg Township Republican Organization sent out a mailer with Mike’s photo on a milk carton…

Well, yeah. He’s not a trustee, so of course he isn’t in the public records.

Kind of a lame attack if you ask me. I mean, sheesh, the local GOP should’ve just called me if they wanted some opposition research.

Just kidding.

Mostly.

Also, they have his name as Mike Murray and Mike Murphy. Proofread much?

Good luck, Mike.

Maybe they should have looked up the name “Mike Murray” instead of “Mike Murphy.” Sheesh.

  2. - collar observer - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 10:15 am:

“Still living the dream” I see Mike. Go get em!

  3. - Devices - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 10:19 am:

yeah, they should have gone the more traditional route and attacked him for cutting social security medicaid. much more believable.

  4. - Wumpus - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 10:26 am:

Guilt by association in my book. Mike Murray/Murphy, it doesn’t matter what your name is. The only way D’s generally get elected is if they switch party affiliation after elected.

It is only lame if it is not effective.

  5. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 10:28 am:

I would just put it on a Oberweis Dairy bottle/carton to make the point even stronger, even though they spelled the name of the target wrong …

Spelling a name CORRECT … in a mail peice is …optional?

Direct Mail … loads of fun for the Whole Family!

  6. - CircularFiringSquad - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 10:31 am:

We have been to some Schaumburg Twp board meetings Murray is right to skip them…at least until he starts getting a stipend to show up.
Does the township become a paying subscriber once the votes are counted?

  7. - Paul Richardson - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 10:38 am:

Mike, thanks for taking the plunge and being the first to test what “former intern to Rich Miller” on a resume really means.

For my own part, I’m terrified something would leak about the night I escaped with my life only thanks to the kindness of one Mr. Kelly.

11am (5 hours last with Morning Shorts). “I’m in a hotel room.” “Which one?” “I don’t know.” “Open up the drawer and see what address is printed on the Bible.”

Also, I’m not sure how the Goodfellas-based nickname “C” would play when on a ballot. A lot of unknowns.

    Best of luck good sir.

  8. - walkinfool - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 10:40 am:

So few attend Township Board meetings, (except when groups are requesting grants) that one can easily notice if someone different shows up any time in the year.

Townships have been long obsolete in the Chicago suburbs. I hope his platform is to substantially close it down de facto, if not yet de jure.

  9. - Plutocrat03 - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 10:43 am:

In our community, prospective candidates attend board meetings and budget hearings to learn what is going on and to understand the budget.

It is a way to assert that Mike does not know what is going on in that political arena. It is up to Mike to make his case that he is up to speed on the issues and is qualified to lead.

  10. - ChicagoDem - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 11:02 am:

Rich–no problem. Advice Mike to join the attackers and agree with them that this guy Murray has been missing for a long time and may never show up. So, him ask for the voters’ support because unlike Murray, “Mike Murphy will show up, and help them solve thier township problems.”

  11. - hisgirlfriday - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 11:05 am:

My favorite campaign mailer typo remains Sen. Patrick O’Malleys promises to root out pubic corruption.

But it is sad that copy editors can’t even get work proofreading mail pieces these days.

  12. - Amalia - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 11:14 am:

The R Township folks in the NW burbs are feeling the heat!

  13. - Matt - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 11:17 am:

Mikes a great guy. Haven’t talked to him for awhile but worked on several campaigns with him. He’s the only man that can convince me to wake up at 5am to go fishing on a Saturday!

  14. - ChicagoDem - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 11:33 am:

Sorry for the typos…”their” and of course, I meant to say that Mike should ask the voters, etc.

  15. - WizzardOfOzzie - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 11:34 am:

Good luck Mike! Go get em!

  16. - Boone Logan Square - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 11:40 am:

    Organization is an abused word.

  17. - Shemp - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 12:10 pm:

Should be a non-topic if only the GA could ever find the guts to abolish this antiquated level of government.

  18. - Just Me - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 12:23 pm:

I’m shocked! Absolutely shocked that someone would send out a mailpiece that was unfair.

  19. - Amalia - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 12:32 pm:

@Shemp, there are those in Cook County who claim that they are bringing people closer to County government because, for example, they help with assessments. I’ve actually seen signs from a township advertising their radio station, which would seem to be a good emergency management thing until you read on their website that they publicize a township garage sale on the station. there will be more bad township official news soon. it’s all baloney. you are spot on with the antiquated in need of the will to abolish.

    nonetheless, good luck Mike!!!!

  20. - Wumpus - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 12:37 pm:

As people leave the city and move to somewhere safe/reasonable to live, D politics will follow. :)

  21. - Kevin Fanning - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 1:21 pm:

Good luck Mike! Way to go. The other former interns have your back.

  22. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 2:07 pm:

    Good luck, Mitch Maloney.

  23. - G. Willickers - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 2:39 pm:

Wheeling township GOP has been trying to use the same lame attack apparently not realizing the minutes of their very short meetings are public record. Of course they also complained over the amount of FOIAs needed to get accurate info but that’s another story. Both sides of their mouth, they speak out of.

Amalia’s right - the suburbs are waking up to the inefficiencies that are rampant in local townships.

In Wheeling Township the long-serving incumbent Republicans have built up an enormous 2-year reserve fund. Millions in tax dollars that are just sitting in the bank doing nothing.

Then they wonder what’s going on when it property taxes get so high that Democrats are calling them out on it.

Check out Dems4LowerTaxes.com and go vote Democratic in Wheeling Township today.

  24. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 3:08 pm:

Good luck kid. The pro-bearded candidate PAC is looking for leaders. There isn’t enough facial hair in politics these days and that’s a shame.

  25. - reformer - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 3:35 pm:

I voted for Murray, but I doubt the Democrats will win a single township seat. They weren’t even on the ballot during the first week of early voting due to objections. They just started campaigning a couple of weeks ago. One of the Dem candidates knocked on the door of a hard R, not a good use of campaign time in an election with a low turnout.

  26. - 3rd Generation Chicago Native - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 4:13 pm:

As far as I am aware a trustee position is very low pay, why would an opposition group spend so much on this negative ad?

  27. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 4:38 pm:

===why would an opposition group spend so much on this negative ad? ===

Trustees vote … on budgets … and allocate monies from approved budgets…

    “Follow the money”

That is why you go negative, its not about the Trustee’s salary, it’s what the Trustee’s vote to SPEND money. control Trustee’s votes, control the Budget, control the money.

  28. - Amalia - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 5:02 pm:

@reformer, so that’s right, Schaumburg Township is one of the places where folks were knocked off the ballot! that should embolden Dems in all the township races, in my opinion. I love the feeling of election day late in the afternoon, smells like, ……a party, victory or not!

  29. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 5:08 pm:

amalia, I love election days, too. I suppose it comes from growing up in a household with Dad the committeman and Mom the election judge. Polling Place at my school.

Just busts my uh, buttons that so few people turn out for the offyears. Here in the ‘Patch we have some real issues on the school board and turnout is predicted at a whoppin’ 18 percent.

    Good luck, Matt, uh, Mike!

  30. - Jo - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 5:50 pm:

I hope Mike has learned & grown since his first night in Springfield when he tried to hang with the “big dogs” in Boone’s beer garden and got schooled in the art of session time drinking and rebounding for the next morning.

  31. - Amalia - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 6:04 pm:

@Arthur Andersen, hope you have a good evening, election wise and fun wise.

I’m ending the day by watching negative campaigning as things wind down. win or lose, lots of stuff gets tossed in the wind, or on line, over the last few days before the polls close and there is always something to clean up literally or metaphorically.

  32. - Wumpus - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 7:09 pm:

@amalia, perhaps they should have met the ballot qualifications. They should know they will be challenged and it ispart of the process that this si done. Obama had a competitor knocked off the ballot, so have numerous other elcted officials. The only way to avoid this fate is to have enough valid signatures. An annoying process, but it is legal.

  33. - Mike Murray - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 9:30 pm:

Thanks to all the well wishes and haters alike. This whole process was a lot of fun.

K-Fan and Matt, lets get drinks soon.

Jo, that night at Boones was a healthy liver ago. I’d be up for the challenge now. Stop bring back the shame. Lol

  34. - Nick Kruse - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 9:46 pm:

This mailer reminds me of when Stephen Colbert criticized Eleanor Holmes Norton for not casting a single vote in Congress. The only difference here is that Colbert was obviously satire while the Schaumburg Township Republican Organization is supposed to be raising substantial points as to why Murray shouldn’t be elected. The bottom line here is that you can’t criticize someone for not doing something that they aren’t allowed to do.

  35. - Amalia - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 10:04 pm:

@Wumpus, but they are on the ballot, and the votes are being counted, so…..

  36. - Amalia - Tuesday, Apr 9, 13 @ 10:11 pm:

anyone else cruising down the election results from Cook County? what is the election in Norridge, Tom Benigno (sp?) for Mayor? is that the same person as a secy of state official current? former? btw, he’s losing/lost.

  37. - Sacajawea - Wednesday, Apr 10, 13 @ 8:50 am:

    A few clarifications:

The Schaumburg Republicans are (and continue to be) the incumbents, not ‘the opposition.’

Regardless of the two names on the mailer, it was clearly effective as Mike Murray came in 7th out of 8 candidates.

Why does anyone spend huge money on a race when the pay is not high? In 2010, Michelle Mussman spent $750,000 to get elected to an office that pays $61,000. Why? [insert Oswego Willy’s above answer here].

@Nick Kruse: Mike Murray wasn’t allowed to attend township meetings? Really? They’ve always been open to the public to my knowledge. .

Good luck in your future endeavors, Mike. I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ll hear from you!
